Ruins of Alterac

Once the capital of the smallest of the human kingdoms, Alterac kingdom, it now lies in ruins after the traitorous nation forged a secret agreement with the invading orcs during the Second War. Located to the east of the ruins of Alterac is the town of Strahnbrad. Once a bustling city, it was largely left untouched by the Scourge but was attacked several times by raiding Blackrock orcs during the Third War. After the destruction of Alterac the nobles fled here and formed a secret guild of spies and thieves known as the Syndicate. From here they plot their revenge against the Alliance.

Arathi Highlands

Located in southern Lordaeron is Arathi Highlands. Serving as a connection point to Khaz Modan from the northern kingdoms, this land was once controlled by the human forces of Stromgarde, but they relinquished control when the Scourge invaded. A large band of forest trolls and ogres have set up camps in the forest and mountains that occupy this place. The Syndicate is very active in this area as well both in Stromgarde and Northfold Manor.

Refuge Pointe

Refuge Pointe is all that remains of the once great kingdom of Stromgarde. With their Keep in ruins, and most of their populace fled south, the proud remnants of Stromgarde's elite army still fight on to reclaim their land. It is from Refuge Pointe that the Alliance's military operations in the area are conducted, most of which is concerned with aiding the Stromgarde army in retaking their former capital.

Stromgarde

Former capital of one of the smallest human kingdoms in Azeroth, but considered to be the heart. Stromgarde, formerly known as the city-state Strom, was once the capital of the ancient Arathi nation- Arathor. For over a thousand years it served as the hub for humanity until new human city-states began to arise and the population began to disperse to these new places. The lords of Arathor moved their holdings to Lordaeron and the ancient remains of Strom were renamed into the city-state of Stromgarde.

Its forces were forced to flee their capital when the Scourge invaded. Most of the survivors joined with Jaina Proudmoore's force in Theremore Isle, but the few that stayed behind set up a refuge's pointe in the center of the land, where they hope to retake their capital from the Syndicate and the ogres who now occupy it. Inside the southeastern portion, the forces of Stromgarde, are under the command of Galen Trollbane. The Tower of Arathor was formerly dedicated to the study of the wizards of Arathor, but has since the fall of Stromgarde been taken over by the Boulderfist ogres. Unfortunately Dark Iron dwarves damaged half of the span and keep out any dwarven repair teams from repairing it.

Thoradin's Wall

Thoradin's Wall is a huge wall separating the Arathi Highlands from the Hillsbrad Foothills. The wall protected Stromgarde and the Arathi Highlands from the invading Scourge.

In World of Warcraft, the gigantic wall is heavily damaged. It is unclear why the wall is in ruins, however one can assume that possibly the local ogre or Troll clans, or possibly the Syndicate may be responsible. There is no evidence or lore explaining the origin of the great wall, but one can suppose that King Thoradin built it ages past, during the Troll Wars, perhaps to protect his lands from the trolls' onslaught.

However, Gilneas reluctantly joined the Alliance when the orcs stepped up their attacks. Genn Greymane, the past and possibly current King of Gilneas was heavily influenced by Lord Prestor, aka Deathwing who was the aid to Lord Pernolde of Alterac. During the Third War they closed the gates of the Greymane Wall, leaving them untouched by the Burning Legion and the Scourge. Those gates haven't been opened since. The name Deathwing may refer to: In the Warhammer 40,000 fictional universe: Deathwing, the First Company of the Dark Angels Space Marines. ...

Located in between Silverpine forest and the Arathi Highlands lies to the green sloping Hillsbrad Foothills. This place is a hotbed of Horde-Alliance tension, as each faction has a base vying for supremacy in the region. This area is also infamous as the site of Archimode's arrival in Azeroth.

Durnholde Keep

Once used by the Alliance, commanded by General Aedelas Blackmoore it was abandoned after the Third War and now the Syndicate controls its ruins. It is most famous for being the home of Thrall when he was growing up. He would later return here and lay siege to the keep as revenge for death his childhood friend, Taretha Foxton, by the hands of Blackmoore and for his tyranny over the orcs. Among its notables is the graveyard containing the remains of Helcular, a warlock who attempted to become a lich but was killed by an angry mob before he could complete his work. The sleepy town has become a battleground after the Horde took over the nearby town of Tarren Mill and now both sides use these towns to launch raids upon each other. Naga and murloc have begun to appear on the northern and southern shores and the Alliance asks for any passing travelers to help deal with these menaces. On a historical note, it is here that the primary crystal component of The Ashbringer, a semi-sentient sword of immense power, was transformed from a manifestation of Dark energy into Light energy by the priest Isillien when he sought to destroy it with Holy power. This is a list of the major items from Blizzard Entertainments Warcraft universe — a fictional universe in which a series of video games and books are set. ...

Plaguelands, The

Divided into two sections, eastern and western, this land has suffered and continues to suffer greatly from the Scourge invasion. One of the formerly largest and most prosperous human cities, Stratholme, is located in the north but is now a burning ruin infested with undead. Even the sky is a murky orange color. Most terrifying of all, however, the massive floating citadel of Naxxramas, home and laboratory of the Lich King's mightiest lieutenant, the lich Kel'Thuzad, hovers above in the air. The Argent Dawn maintain a small outpost in a church called the Light's Hope Chapel. Here they coordinate their attacks on the Scourge, help any travelers passing through, and struggle to reclaim the forsaken land. Stratholme is a location set in Blizzard Entertainments video game and book series, Warcraft. ... The Argent Dawn tabard. ...

Naxxramas

Naxxramas is an ancient nerubian pyramid that was gifted to Kel'Thuzad by the Lich in return for his loyalty. The pyramid, known by the Scourge as a Necropolis, floats in the skies above the Plaguewood that surrounds the front gates of Stratholme. Only those who attune themselves to the runic spire in the Plaguewood can enter Kel'Thuzad's fortress, where they do battle with the elite of the Scourge in Lordaeron.

Stratholme

During the second war Stratholme served as the primary oil-producing city for the Alliance. But the city was destroyed by Prince Arthas Menethil in order to prevent the citizens from becoming undead servants of the dreadlord Mal'Ganis and the Scourge. The burning remains of the city still stands, however, it is now fought over by the Scarlet Crusade and the Scourge. Under the command of Grand Crusader Dathrohan, the Scarlet Crusade control the western half of the city, called the Scarlet Bastion. The Scourge, under the command of the dark knight Baron Rivendare, control the eastern half. Malganis was sent by Tichondrius to corrupt humanity with infected grain. ... Scholomance

Owned by the Barov family, the largest landholders in the area, this island fortress can be found in the center of Caer Darrow lake. Shortly before the third war the family came to the realization that they could not keep up with land taxes. They made a pact with Kel'Thuzad and agreed to turn over their castle for use by the Cult of the Damned as a school for studying the dark arts. In return they would be compensated for the use of their home. As time continued, more and more of the Barov's servants began disappearing as Kel'Thuzad continued his experiments in the lower regions of the estate. Soon thereafter, the fortress began being filled with more practitioners of the dark arts and demonic creatures alike. In time, most of the Barov family would succumb to the lich's experiments as well, being turned into creatures to serve their master. However two of the sons, Weldon and Alexi, escaped and are now fighting over who inherits the Barov family fortune. He began to perform experiments on the villagers of the nearby Pyrewood Village.

Tirisfal Glades

Located just north of the Ruins of Lordaeron is the gloomy forest of Tirisfal Glades. Now under the control of The Forsaken, this area is famous and infamous as the birthplace of the Order of Tirisfal and the town of Brill, the birthplace of the plague that would destroy the kingdom of Lordaeron. The only humans left here are the Scarlet Crusade who took over the various keeps and towers in order to strike against the Forsaken. The Forsaken, having turned on the Scourge when released from the Lich King's control, took over Lordaeron and completed Undercity's construction. The Undercity is a city in the fictional Warcraft universe. ...

Quel'Thalas

Main article: Quel'Thalas

Quel'Thalas is the homeland of the blood elves, formerly known as the high elves. The Highborne, as the high elves were known in ages past, once co-existed with the night elves, and were exiled for not abandoning their pursuit of magic. For millennia, they lived in peace in the kingdom they created for themselves, their only major enemy being the Amani forest trolls; it was a battle against these trolls, nearly resulting in the annihilation of Quel'Thalas, that led to their first encounters with humans, and the elves' swearing to aid the Arathi bloodline. They fulfilled their promise by aiding Anduin Lothar, Regent Lord of Azeroth, during the Second War, a promise they believed fulfilled upon Lothar's death (Lothar was the last of the pureblood Arathi). In the fictional Warcraft Universe, QuelThalas is the homeland of the High Elves. ... Sir Anduin Lothar was a knight of the Kingdom of Stormwind on the continent of Azeroth in the Warcraft Universe. ...

Quel'Thalas was all but destroyed by the invasion of the Scourge, led by Arthas Menethil, former Crown Prince of Lordaeron; he laid waste to their towns and used the powers of their sacred Sunwell to resurrect the necromancer Kel'Thuzad as a sorcerous lich. This act cut the blood elves off from their source of magic, and it quickly became apparent they had become addicted to it, with a large portion of their remaining society going mad with desire for mana.

Eversong Woods

Eversong Woods is located on the northernmost tip of Quel'Thalas, stretching out into the sea. These woods seem to be in an eternal autumn, the leaves on the trees gold and red. The only thing marring the "perfection" of this place is the blighted path known as the Dead Scar.

Fairbreeze Village

Fairbreeze Village is a small town located in the southwestern portion of Eversong. The inhabitants have been forced to fend for themselves, cut off from any form of reinforcements in Silvermoon.

Ruins of Silvermoon

When the blood elves reclaimed Quel'Thalas, they rebuilt the eastern districts of Silvermoon as their capital. The western districts, however, remain in ruins, and are inhabited by damaged arcane guardians and magic-crazed blood elves known as Wretched. The blood elves have reclaimed an area known as Falconwing Square, near the gates into Eversong proper, as their base in the ruins to battle against the Wretched.

The Scorched Grove

The Scorched Grove is an area of burnt forest around a damaged runestone near the border with the Ghostlands. When the runestone failed, the blood elves burned the forests around it to prevent the Scourge from taking hold in Eversong.

Sunstrider Isle

Sunstrider Isle is where blood elves begin their service to Silvermoon and to the Horde. The regional government is based at the Sunspire. The nearby Falthrien Academy, believed to be some sort of educational center, is now overrun by arcane wraiths, and a Wretched named Felendren the Banished makes his home at the top. A shrine to Dath'Remar Sunstrider, the first King of Quel'Thalas, stands near the coast.

Dead Scar, The

The Dead Scar is the path used by Arthas on his way to the Sunwell. It stretches from the fortress of Deatholme in southern Ghostlands all the way to the gates of Silvermoon itself. The path is almost permanently blighted (experimentation by blood elf magisters has led to this conclusion), and is constantly patrolled by undead, varying in strength as the path goes from the gates of Silvermoon down to the gates of Deatholme.

Ghostlands

The Ghostlands, also known as the Blackened Woods, is the southern portion of Quel'Thalas, bordering what is now the Eastern Plaguelands. Like the Scorched Grove, the Ghostlands were burned to prevent the Scourge from taking hold in the land, trying to give the Scourge a pyrrhic victory. The land is still haunted by the ghosts of the dead, and the remnants of the Scourge's invasion force. A Pyrrhic victory is a victory with devastating cost to the victor. ...

Amani Pass

The Amani Pass is a mountain ridge that leads up to the gates of Zul'Aman, the forest troll capital in Quel'Thalas. The Pass is surrounded by the troll town of Zeb'Nowa.

Deatholme

The fortress of Deatholme is the primary bastion of the Scourge in Quel'Thalas, located just over the hills from Stratholme, the Scourge's capital in Lordaeron. This small area seems to combine all of the elements of the nearby Eastern Plaguelands - tainted sky, blighted soil, slaughterhouses and ziggurats, and scores of undead and necromancers patrolling it. At its center is the Tower of the Damned, the headquarters of Dar'Khan Drathir, the Scourge overlord in Quel'Thalas. Spread throughout Deatholme are Dar'Khan's lieutenants - Jurion the Deceiver, Masophet the Black, Mirdoran the Fallen, and Borgoth the Bloodletter.

Farstrider Enclave

The Farstrider Enclave is located on the southern shore of Lake Elrendar, which connects Eversong and Ghostlands. The Farstriders, rangers from Silvermoon, are stationed here, where they combat the Amani forest trolls and the plagued wildlife of the Ghostlands.

Sanctum of the Sun

The Sanctum of the Sun is one of two arcane sanctums in Ghostlands, the other being the non-functional Sanctum of the Moon. The Sanctum of the Sun is located at the southern base of Sungraze Peak, east of Tranquillien. The Sanctum has been reactivated and is used as a base of operations against the Scourge in general, and Dar'Khan in particular.

Thalassian Pass

The Thalassian Pass connects Quel'Thalas to the province of Lordaeron that includes Stratholme, Darrowshire and Tyr's Hand - now known as the Eastern Plaguelands. The gatehouse, presumably the Outer Elfgate that separated Quel'Thalas from Lordaeron, is flanked by Scourge banners, presumably set up when Arthas entered Quel'Thalas and set up his invasion force to destroy their way through to the Sunwell. In the Eastern Plaguelands, not far from the gates of Quel'Thalas, the Scourge prepares to travel through the Pass and invade Quel'Thalas once more, assembling siege engineers and their meat wagons not far from the Pass. Blood Knights aspiring to become Masters must traverse the Thalassian Pass and disrupt the Scourge's plans to besiege Quel'Thalas once more.

Tranquillien

The town of Tranquillien was once a typical high elven town in Quel'Thalas. When Arthas began slaughtering his way through Quel'Thalas, the elves were forced to retreat and abandoned the town to the elements. After the blood elves allied with the Horde, they found an unlikely (but not all that surprising) ally in the undead Forsaken, many of whom had been elves slaughtered by Arthas' genocidal rampage. The Forsaken agreed to aid the blood elves in defeating Dar'Khan Drathir, the only obstacle to the blood elves truly becoming members of the Horde, and they made their headquarters in Tranquillien. Here they must deal with their myriad enemies in the region - from the Amani forest trolls to Dar'Khan and the Scourge.

Quel'Danas

According to lore, Quel'Danas is the location of the aeries where dragonhawks are born and bred for use by dragonhawk riders in the service of Silvermoon.

Silvermoon

Main article: Silvermoon

Silvermoon is the capital of Quel'Thalas, and has been since the kingdom was established many millennia ago. When Arthas invaded Quel'Thalas, the city was razed by the Scourge and left in ruins after they departed. But recently, the survivors of Quel'Thalas reclaimed their ancestral homeland and rebuilt as much of their capital as they could. They used the Dead Scar as a dividing line of sorts - the districts on the eastern side of the Dead Scar were rebuilt and reinhabited, and the districts on the western side were left in ruins. This is a list of the major and minor Locations ordered by region (after the events of Third Great War) in the Warcraft universe — a fictional universe in which a series of video games and books are set. ...

Silvermoon is connected to the Forsaken Undercity via an orb of translocation built into the inner sanctum of Sunfury Spire, the palace of the King of Quel'Thalas. When used, the orb deposits the adventurer in an open area of the courtyard of the ruins of Lordaeron, directly above the Undercity. This allows adventurers to avoid traversing the lethal Plaguelands to reach the rest of "civilization".

Sunwell Plateau

The Sunwell Plateau is the location of the Sunwell Grove, where at its center resides the Sunwell itself - or rather, what remains of it. The Plateau is an island off the northern coast of Quel'Thalas, and is presumably connected to Silvermoon by some means. The Plateau was the final destination of Arthas in his quest to resurrect Kel'Thuzad.

Zul'Aman

Zul'Aman is the fortress capital of the Amani forest trolls in Quel'Thalas, located in the southern Ghostlands. Little to nothing is known of what exactly to expect there, but it is likely to be well fortified.

Khaz Modan

Main article: Khaz Modan

Khaz Modan is the dwarven and gnomish homeland. It is located in the north (roughly the center) of the continent of Azeroth (between Azeroth and Lordaeron), and consists of the wintry peaks of Dun Morogh, the forested highlands of Loch Modan and the endless marshes of the Wetlands. It was invaded by the Horde during the Second War, though the dwarven capital of Ironforge and the capital of the gnomes, Gnomeregan, remained unbreached. Recently, an invasion of murderous Troggs from the Uldaman excavation destroyed Gnomeregan, forcing the gnomes to seek the aid of their dwarven cousins. Ironforge / Khaz Modan Dwarven insignia. ...

Badlands, The

The Badlands are a dusty, dry place, home to a small Horde outpost at Kargath, the ogre home of Dustbelch Grotto, and Uldaman, an abandoned home of what is assumed to be the earliest inhabitants of the Badlands, and Azeroth itself.

Kargath

Kargath is the solitary Horde outpost in the Badlands and is used to launch missions against the Dark Iron Dwarves of Blackrock Depths and the Dark Horde led by Rend Blackhand, the (long presumed dead) son of Blackhand the Destroyer (the Warchief of the first WarCraft game). The outpost is named after Kargath Bladefist, the previous leader of the orcish Shattered Hand clan. Kargath Bladefist has recently been discovered to be leading a new army of fel orcs in the Outlands. How or why he has been re-enslaved by demonic powers has yet to be revealed.

Uldaman

Uldaman is the site of the ruins of the city of the dwarven ancestors, the Earthen. Recently both the Bronzebeard and Dark Iron dwarves have begun excavating the ruins in hope of finding out more about their past.

Dun Morogh

Located between the magma-strewn wasteland of the Searing Gorge in the south, the gentle ridges of Loch Modan to the east, and the swampy Wetlands to the Northeast, Dun Morogh is home to both the gnomes and the dwarves, and is the location of their shared capital city Ironforge, and their starting area Coldridge Valley. Valley of the Kings

Located in southern Loch Modan in a secluded valley leading into Dun Murogh and the Searing Gorge, this area holds two giant dwarf statues that honor the former kings Madoran Bronzebeard and Khardros Wildhammer. There is also a small outpost here that fights a continuous battle against the Trogg who have settled in the nearby mountains.

Stonewrought Pass

This is a pass under the mountains, located in the Valley of the Kings, that connects Loch Modan with the Searing Gorge. To prevent the evil Dark Iron dwarves and their forces from the south from getting out, the pass is gated off and guarded by a single though bossy and zealous female dwarf.

Searing Gorge

The Searing Gorge is a hot, bleak, volcanic zone of fire and ash to the north of Blackrock Mountain, home of the Dark Iron dwarves and Blackrock orcs, located in the Blackrock Depths and its Spire, respectively. The gorge is used by the Dark Iron dwarves as a mustering ground/military factory, where they train and build their forces and forge mighty War Golems from rivers of molten lava. In addition to hostile Dark Iron dwarves and their forces, there is also a non-corrupt faction of Dark Iron dwarves called the Thorium Brotherhood in the north who oppose the wicked ways of their kin and seek the aid of adventurers to battle against them.

Algaz Gate

The Algaz Gate is the path running between the territory of Loch Modan and the territory known as The Wetlands. The "Gate" itself is actually a series of tunnels with portcullises. However, since both territories are controlled by the dwarves of Khaz Modan, the gates are never closed or locked, even though rogue orcs of the Dragonmaw Clan have encamped along the trail.

Dun Modr

Dun Modr was an ancient dwarven city in northern Khaz Modan whose ruins were close to a Horde base during the Second War. It was very near to the Alliance stronghold of Tol Barad, which the Horde repeatedly assaulted before their forces at Dun Modr were finally routed. The city of Dun Modr is currently the site of a continual battle between the dwarves of Khaz Modan and the Dark Iron dwarves, who have occupied the city.

Dragonmaw Gates

The Dragonmaw Gates are three gates leading up to Grim Batol. They were built by the Dragonmaw Clan of orcs, who had enslaved Alexstrasza, the queen of the red dragonflight and the dragon aspect of life. Though the gates would keep any invaders out, they ultimately proved to be the Dragonmaw Clan's undoing, as Alexstrazsa and her children broke free from their bondage and slaughtered all but a remnant of the once-numerous clan. These gates are currently guarded by various red dragonflight dragons. Alexstrasza the Life-Binder, the wondrous and ancient Queen of Dragons, was empowered by the Titans themselves to protect the young world of Azeroth from the flame. ...

Grim Batol

Originally an ancient Wildhammer Clan dwarven settlement, Grim Batol was abandoned following the War of the Three Hammers; this place was also the site of fierce fighting between the Alliance and Horde during the Second War. It was the base of operations for the Dragonmaw Clan and the headquarters of the Horde's occupation forces in Khaz Modan. After the Second War, the liberated dragonqueen Alexstrasza and her red dragonflight incinerated the fortress; it still lies in ruin. The city was left untouched, however, as the dwarf clan had sealed their gates after the Dark Iron queen cursed it. The Wildhammers resolved to never again live beneath a mountain, and now reside atop Aerie Peak in the Hinterlands. Dwarves as seen in the World of Warcraft. ...

Menethil Harbor

Menethil Harbor is a walled port city to the north of Ironforge. Its strategic importance lies in its value as a transportation hub, serving as a link to Theramore Isle on the eastern seaboard of Kalimdor, and Auberdine on the western seaboard. It also plays a role as a link between Ironforge and the northern Alliance townships of Southshore and the Stromgarde remnants at Refuge Pointe. Both the humans and dwarves maintain a presence in Menethil Harbor, which gets it's name from the last human king of Lordaeron, King Terenas Menethil II.

Blackrock Mountain

Blackrock Mountain is a zone dividing the Burning Steppes and the Searing Gorge. Although technically a sub-region of either of those zones, here it is considered a true zone by itself. The zone takes place within the bowels of the mighty volcano Blackrock Mountain (it is the only indoor/underground zone in World of Warcraft), and it is one of the most important locations in Warcraft lore. The zone contains 4 high level instances: Blackrock Spire, Blackrock Depths, Molten Core, and Blackwing Lair. For other uses, see Volcano (disambiguation). ...

History/Lore: Blackrock Mountain was created at the end of the War of the Three Hammers when the Dark Iron Dwarf Lord, Thaurissan, accidentally summoned Ragnaros the Firelord from his prison beneath the earth. The power unleashed by his "rebirth" was so massive it shattered a large section of the Redridge Mountains, creating the areas now known as the Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes. Ragnaros enslaved the Dark Iron Dwarf tribe, and they have dug many tunnels and created a huge underground city in the depths of the mountain. Dwarves would later name this mountain Blackrock Spire.

During the events of the First War, the Blackrock clan of orcs have taken over the upper reaches of the mountain. Led by chieftain Rend Blackhand, they have eventually struck a deal with the current head of the Black Dragonflight, Nefarian.

Both Ragnaros and Nefarian now wage a brutal war for supremacy and control of the mountain and then the rest of Azeroth. Ragnaros controls his Dark Iron Dwarves and their various machines and golems, as well as an army of elementals, beasts and powerful lieutenants such as Baron Geddon, Garr and Sulfuron. Nefarian controls the Blackrock tribe of orcs, as well as small armies of trolls and ogres, as well as his dragon lieutenants and his latest invention, the Chromatic Dragonflight.

Blackrock Depths

This dark iron dwarf city encomposses the entire bowels of Blackrock mountain. But after they summoned the Fire Lord Ragnaros, they lost control of the upper half and retreated into the lower sections where the dwarves work tiressly for their new master. The leader of the dark iron dwarves, Emperor Dagran Thaurissan rules from here.

Blackwing Lair

Located at the very top of the mountain. This lair is controlled by the black dragonflight led by Nefarian. Its upper half is a great abandoned city a path in which leads to Blackrock Spire, and the bottom half is flooded with a huge pool of swirling molten lava and has a path leading into the Grinding Quarry and beyond that the Blackrock Dephs and Molten Core. Hanging in the center of the Molten Span suspended by chains is a large rock inside of which is Forgewright's Tomb. The Molten Span has entrances leading outside into the Burning Steppes and Searing Gorge, and inside it a lone black Dragon flies around in the air in vigil.

Blasted Lands, The

A scorched and reddish-pink desert region greets all visitors who travel here. Once covered in swampland, nothing remains of the marshland environment but cracked and dried dirt. This area was transformed into its current state when the Last Guardian Medivh, under the control of Sargeras, opened the Dark Portal and unleashed the Orcish Horde upon Azeroth. The portal was closed after Medivh was killed but the damage remained. The Alliance built Nethergard Keep in order to keep an eye on the Dark Portal and the demons who still roam freely around. A keep formerly used by the first Orcish Horde still remains here, its burned husk occupied only by orges now.

Altar of Storms (Blasted Lands)

The Altars of Storms were initially created by the warlock Gul'dan to channel demonic energies into Ogre-Magi. The Altars of Storms were imbued with the corrupted power of the great Runestone at Caer Darrow.

Following Thrall's reformation of the Horde, many Altars were retooled by troll masons into structures capable of channelling shamanistic energies with the intent of reviving fallen heroes.

Two of the original, demonic altars remain, one in the Burning Steppes near Blackrock Mountain, and one in the Blasted Lands.

The Dark Portal

The Dark Portal (aka the Great Portal) is the gateway between Azeroth and Draenor (now called Outland [see below]). The Azeroth side of the Portal is located in the southeastern reaches of the Blasted Lands of southern Azeroth, while the Draenor side, the Stair of Destiny, is located in the eastern portion of the Hellfire Peninsula.

The Dark Portal was created by joint effort between Medivh, possessed by the Dark Titan Sargeras, and the warlocks of the Shadow Council, which allowed the Horde to invade the world of Azeroth. The Portal bridged the distance between the worlds of Azeroth and Draenor, and it was large enough that armies might pass through it. Gul'dan immediately dispatched orc scouts through the Portal in preparation for the coming invasion. The armies of the orcs poured through the Portal into the unsuspecting kingdom of Stormwind, beginning the First War.

Dreadmaul Hold

Dreadmaul Hold is the main encampment of the powerful Dreadmaul Ogres in the northwest corner of the Blasted Lands. Venturing into the Hold is extremely dangerous and adventures are cautioned not to go in alone.

Dreadmaul Post

Dreadmaul Post is an outpost of the Dreadmaul Ogre Clan in the Blasted Lands. Dreadmaul Ogres remained close to the Dark Portal after coming to Azeroth from Draenor. They continue to maintain a strong presence in the area. An occasional lost Draenei can also be found wandering the nearby territory.

Garrison Armory

The Garrison Armory is a vital Alliance mining outpost near the Nethergarde Keep in the Blasted Lands. Here Alliance miners toil to gather precious resources and minerals for the Nethergarde Keep. These resources are frequently shipped to Stormwind in exchange for the other vital resources Nethergarde Keep depends upon to survive. As with similar places, the mine in this mine cannot be mined by alliance players, but can be with horde. (Similar to mines found in mines controlled by horde NPCs, for horde players.)

Nethergarde Keep

Nethergarde Keep is a heavily defended Alliance town in the Blasted Lands. Though technically it's just a castle like Northwatch Hold in the Barrens, none of the Guards are PvP-enabled except the Gryphon Master and a few questgivers.

Nethergarde Keep was built during the Second War - shortly after the destruction of the first Dark Portal - at the behest of the Archmage Khadgar to ensure that there would be no further invasions from Draenor. It stands on a high bluff along the only road into the Blasted Lands, a road often travelled by both the Horde and the Alliance as they prepare to do battle with the demonic forces in the region.

Khadgar, a mage of the Kirin Tor of Dalaran, was the master of Nethergarde until the reconstruction of the Dark Portal by Ner'zhul and his clans on Draenor. When the orcs began attacking Azeroth once more, Khadgar and his friends Turalyon, Danath Trollbane, Alleria Windrunner and Kurdran Wildhammer rallied troops and led the Alliance Expedition through the Dark Portal, to destroy the Horde and seal off the Portal once and for all. When Ner'zhul opened his portals, which began to tear Draenor apart, the five leaders remained behind to seal it from Draenor, so that the backlash would not affect their beloved Azeroth.

For twenty years thereafter, the Dark Portal was silent.

After the Portal was sealed, the mages of Dalaran kept Nethergarde in operation both for the Kirin Tor and the Alliance. They focused their efforts on studying the effects that the Portal's energy had on what had become known as the Blasted Lands - the mutations to the wildlife and the tainting of the soil. When Dalaran was destroyed by Archimonde during the invasion of the Burning Legion, Nethergarde's continued survival depended on support from the nearby Kingdom of Stormwind, and by warriors of the Alliance who travelled into the Blasted Lands. Then Lord Kazzak, the demon commander in Azeroth, found an artifact to reopen the Dark Portal, and join the Legion's ranks in Outland. Now, with the way to Outland open again, Nethergarde is now the major hub of activity between Stormwind and the Dark Portal.

The Rise of the Defiler is a craggy set of mountains placed near the middle of the Blasted Lands. They are the home to the great demon, Razelikh

Serpent's Coil

Serpent's Coil is a winding cave system that had been occupied by evil cultists worshipping Kirith the Damned. It is located in the eastern Blasted Lands, in sight of Nethergarde Keep. Several burnt-out orcish structures stand here, remnants from the Second War.

The Tainted Scar

The Tainted Scar is the large southwestern expanse of the Blasted Lands that serves as domain to many of the remaining forces of the Burning Legion that remained on Azeroth after the Third War. (Another such group of demons remains in the similarly scorched and twisted Darkwhisper Gorge in Winterspring). With their leaders gone and their forces diminished, they had no choice but to stand fast and wait for the Dark Portal to open once again.

This area is covered with a thick, vile mist that chokes mortals stupid enough to venture close. Demons dwell here and pervert the already taxed land with their energies. Before Lord Kazzak departed for Outland he took up residence here.

Burning Steppes, The

Formed after the cataclysmic arrival of the Fire Lord Ragnaros, the burning steppes are an ash covered wasteland with lava rivers. The Blackrock orcs maintain a large base here while their leadership dwells inside the largest volcano on Azeroth, Blackrock Mountain, located in the northwestern part. The ruins of the Dark Iron dwarf city of Thaurissan are located here along with a sizeable presence of dragonkin of the black dragonflight. The Alliance maintains a small presence called Morgan's Vigil, near the entrance to the Redridge mountains where they keep an eye on the orcs as well as the dragons.

Altar of Storms (Burning Steppes)

The Altars of Storms were initially created by the warlock Gul'dan to channel demonic energies into Ogre-Magi. The Altars of Storms were imbued with the corrupted power of the great Runestone at Caer Darrow.

Following Thrall's reformation of the Horde, many Altars were retooled by troll masons into structures capable of channelling shamanistic energies with the intent of reviving fallen heroes.

Two of the original, demonic altars remain, one in the Burning Steppes near Blackrock Mountain, and one in the Blasted Lands.

Blackrock Pass

Blackrock Pass is the entrance into the Burning Steppes from the Redridge Mountains. It is referred to by some as the "Gates of Hell". By traveling through the pass, you leave behind the tranquil low-level lands of the human starting areas and venture into the scorched and twisted ruin of the Burning Steppes. Low level travelers are advised to avoid Blackrock Pass at all costs, as the enemies beyond are some of the strongest opponents in the game. All enemies are in their 50's with many being elites.

Blackrock Stronghold

Blackrock Stronghold is a massive fortress controlled by Blackrock Orcs. The stronghold is located in the northern region of the Burning Steppes, just outside Blackrock Spire.

Flame Crest

Flame Crest is the flight point of the Horde at the Burning Steppes. Like Morgan's Vigil there are no guards. There are quests for both factions.

At Flame Crest players will find a small cave with two goblins, Kibler and Yuka Screwspigot, and a bird called Opus. Right before the cave there is a tent with two goblins, Tinkee Steamboil and Maxwort Uberglint, a dwarf called Ragged John and Mathredis Firestar, a blood elf. Besides tent and cave the flight master Vahgruk and the vendor for food & drink, Gruna, stand there.

There is no mailbox at Flame Crest and if players need repairs the goblin engineer Yuka Screwspigot will repair their armor.

Morgan's Vigil

Morgan's Vigil is an Alliance area in the southeast corner of Burning Steppes. It is only a small camp, but inside are several vendors and quest givers. Several quests given here involve Blackrock Depths and Blackrock Spire. It features the Alliance's flight point for the Burning Steppes.

Whoever Morgan is or was, he is not present at the camp.

The Pillar of Ash

The Pillar of Ash is the name for a group of orc structures near the middle of the Burning Steppes. The pillar itself might refer to the tall tower filled to the brim with hostile Blackrock orcs. The only other object of interest here is a huge statue of a human hero - most likely marking the spot where Anduin Lothar fell in battle.

Ruins of Thaurissan

The Ruins of Thaurissan are what remains of the dark irons' original city of Thaurissan. Little is known of the great city, and Royal Historian Archesonus has led research into the ruins found in the Burning Steppes, to reveal some information about the place.

Hundreds of years ago, the city, named after Emperor Thaurissan, stood proudly in a lush expanse of land that is now the dilapidated Burning Steppes.

Thaurissan was home to the nation of Dark iron dwarves and at the time, in the midst of a civil war among the dwarven nation at large.

That area of the world was at one point in time part of the Redridge Mountains - until the day that Thaurissan was consumed by a gigantic explosion, as Thaurissan attempted to summon the ancient Firelord Ragnaros. The city lay in ruin, the surrounding areas reduced to an ashy wasteland.

The Dark Irons that survived made their way into the mountain and began rebuilding their city.

From the ashes of Thaurissan then rose Blackrock Spire and the new Dark iron nation. Additional fortifications were made within the Searing Gorge, in the area known as the Cauldron.

An expedition was commissioned, to find mysterious relics rumored to still lie within the ruins of the city. While none of the relics were able to be brought back in one piece, the information revealed was still priceless. Apparently, merely touching the relics caused memories of the destruction of Thaurissan to overwhelm the explorers, flooding his sight with visions of the terrible ruin wrought upon the city.

Slither Rock

Slither Rock is a small cave found in the far northeastern corner of the Burning Steppes. It is inhabited by a sole creature - the black dragonspawn Cyrus Therepentous. Hidden beyond the Terror Wing Path, Cyrus will nevertheless aid adventurers in vanquishing a common foe, albeit not without an amply supply of rude and derisive comments.

Terror Wing Path

Terror Wing Path is the valley located in the eastern region of the Burning Steppes. Terror Wing is home to many whelps and elite dragonkin of the Black Dragonflight. There are also several elite black drakes patrolling the stretch of the valley. The elite magma giant Volchan can also occasionally be found wandering through the path. Only the highest level adventurers should journey through Terror Wing Path, and even so it is advised not to do so alone.

Deadwind Pass

Connecting Duskwood and the Swamp of Sorrows lies the desolate region of Deadwind Pass, a craggy valley of cold, grey rock, a dark, cloudy sky, and no life. Once home to the Last Guardian Medivh, this land has become cursed and dead because of the dark magics that he practiced from inside his tower. Hanging corpses from dead trees serve notice to any travelers that they should not stay long.

Up until recently, this zone was almost completely ignored and unexplored by players in World of Warcraft, with its only notable feature being the (then) unplayable forebodding tower of Karazhan, inside of which Medivh once made his home. In the Burning Crusade expansion pack, however, Karazhan became a playable instance, and the zone has become slightly more active. World of Warcraft (commonly abbreviated as WoW) is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Blizzard Entertainment and is the fourth game in the Warcraft series, excluding expansion packs and the cancelled Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. ... World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade is the first game expansion for World of Warcraft. ...

Ariden's Camp

Ariden's Camp is a deserted campsite found just north of the main road passing through Deadwind Pass from Duskwood to the Swamp of Sorrows. It is unknown who - or what - Ariden is - or was - but it is possible that some details may be revealed in the Burning Crusade and the opening of Karazhan, to the south.

Crypt (Deadwind Pass)

This crypt lies behind the tower of Karazhan in Deadwind Pass, and is by far the largest of the places named "crypt" in World of Warcraft, stretching deep underground in a labyrinthine series of rooms, each more horrifying than the previous. One of the horrific rooms being the "Upside Down Sinners" -- A large water-filled room with dead people attached to chains, floating away from their attached chain slightly.

This area could be accessed via dying close to the gate and running through it, but this was changed in Patch 2.0

Deadman's Crossing

Deadman's Crossing is the eastern crossroads leading west to Duskwood, east towards Swamp of Sorrows, and south to Karazhan in Deadwind Pass. It is marked with a hangman's tree still bearing a pair of corpses, as well as a signpost reading 'Turn Back!' and 'Abandon hope, all ye who enter here.'

Despite the forbidding warnings, and the high level of monsters in other areas in Deadwind Pass, Deadman's Crossing is perfectly safe for low level adventurers to run through on their way to the Swamp of Sorrows.

Deadwind Ravine

Deadwind Ravine is a craggy cleft running through the mountains south towards Karazhan in Deadwind Pass. The western road runs through the ravine on the upper level, and at the end of the area lies the southern bridge nearby the ominous tower.

Grosh'gok Compound

The Grosh'gok Compound is a cavern located in the Vice, inhabited by level 58-60 Deadwind Brutes and Ogre-Magi. It is the southernmost and largest of the multiple caves in the Vice.

Karazhan

Existing long before Medivh inhabited it, no one is sure who built Karazhan or who inhabited it before the Guardian's residence. The only sign of life outside the tower is the agents of the Violet Eye, agents of the Kirin Tor of Dalaran assigned to spy on Medivh and his activities. Since Medivh's death, Karazhan has been abandoned and no one has been able to get inside. Other than Medivh himself, only Khadgar, Medivh's former apprentice, had a key to the tower. But the key is no longer able to open the way into Karazhan, and only a key that has been enabled by Medivh himself can enter. In order to enable the key, one must travel several decades back in time...

The Master's Cellar

The Master's Cellar is an area riddled with level 68-70 ghosts in the southernmost portion of Deadwind Pass, just south of Karazhan. It is below the ruins of a small town, probably the former home of servants that worked in the nearby tower.

There are two separate entrances to the Master's Cellar. One leads into a vast wine cellar, filled to the brim with Unliving Residents, Unliving Caretakers, Damned Souls, Restless Shades, and Wailing Spectres. The other leads into a similar cellar, but here the floor has collapsed into a cave system leading deep underground. The second cellar and cave system are also filled with the same type of undead, and there are no named or rare undead of any type to be found.

Morgan's Plot

Morgan's Plot is a small church with a cemetery and a crypt located in Deadwind Pass. It can be found behind Karazhan. The church is inhabited by two Unliving Residents, and there is a third patrolling just down the hill. If a player gets attacked, running down into the crypt will save them.

Sleeping Gorge

Sleeping Gorge is a small chasm in eastern Deadwind Pass. One of the paths south to Karazhan runs through the gorge for a stretch before turning east into the Vice.

The Vice

The Vice, also known as the "Deadwind Ogre Mounds", is home to the Deadwind ogre tribe. There are several Deadwind ogre camps in the area, scattered along the road to Kharazan in the southern area of Deadwind Pass. Nobody knows why the ogres have chosen to settle in this desolate area with nothing but restless spirits and a few vultures for company.

Duskwood

Duskwood is located in the southern part of the Kingdom of Stormwind, south of Elwynn Forest, east of Westfall, west of Deadwind Pass, and north of Stranglethorn Vale. It is the human race's level 20 to 30 zone. This once peaceful but now murky and cursed forestland is covered in a blanket of perpetual darkness, which is why the region has been given its name. The woods are inhabited by a defiant people who still cling to their holdings in the face of overwhelming adversity. On all sides lurk dangerous creatures, from skeletal warriors and ghouls to ferocious Worgen and some of the most powerful members of the Defias Brotherhood. The militia of Duskwood, known as the Night Watch, patrol the main thoroughfare and protect Darkshire, wary of anything moving through the shadows. The most prominent geographical feature of Duskwood is an ancient and long-dead volcano crater. The crater, in contrast with the rest of Duskwood, teems with life, and features an immense tree with a portal leading into the Emerald Dream. The sleeping druids' influence can be seen on the surrounding land, which is cloaked in a twilight quite different from the rest of Duskwood. The woods also feature several abandoned farmsteads, as well as the prominent Raven Hill Cemetery, which holds the graves of the numerous people who have been killed by wild beasts and undead since the darkness fell.

Addle's Stead

Addle's Stead is located in southwestern Duskwood, south of Raven Hill and west of the Vul'Gol Ogre Mound. It is one of the many abandoned farmsteads, presumably left behind when the darkness crept into Duskwood. The farm has been completely taken over by agents of the Defias Brotherhood, who creep throughout the field, hide in the barn, and stalk in the small farmhouse. Alliance-aligned adventurers are sometimes brought here in search of an important docket that holds clues to the disappearance of a major character.

Beggar's Haunt

Beggar's Haunt is located in northeastern Duskwood, east of Manor Mistmantle and north of the road that leads into Deadwind Pass. Even though the Horde-aligned tower holds two agents of the forsaken - a Deathguard, and member of the Royal Apothecary Society - they are not aggressive. Thus, Beggar's Haunt is free of enemies and is probably the most tranquil place in all of Duskwood aside from Twilight Grove. A twisting path leads from the tower to a small pool and waterfall, near which rests an unmarked grave.

Brightwood Grove

Brightwood Grove used to be a pleasant and sunny field in the midst of the forest. Now that the gloom of permanent night has settled over Duskwood, the name does nothing but recall a happier time. The few buildings that stood at the edge of the grove lie in ruins and Worgen prowl the dark fields, erecting crude camps and hugrily attacking anyone who come too close. Young Alliance-based adventurers are often sent here to slay some of the wolf-men to better control their numbers.

The Darkened Bank

The Darkened Bank stretches along the northern shore of Duskwood. It runs from the far western edge of Duskwood east to the bridge that connects Duskwood to the Redridge Mountains. At the western edge of The Darkened Bank is a small camp with two refugees, Sven Yorgen and Lars, where you can receive a handful of quests that involve killing the weaker creatures in Duskwood. This is a good place to begin questing in Duskwood and is easily reached by swimming straight south from the far southwest corner of Elwynn Forest.

Darkshire

Darkshire is a once-quaint little woodland village located in Duskwood, but it has literally fallen on dark times. The surrounding forests have been filled with an evil malaise that cloaks the land in constant darkness. The walking dead choke the graveyards, and foul creatures known as worgen have overrun many of the outlying farmsteads. Even worse, Stormwind has all but abandoned the village and the surrounding area, as most of the Stormwind army is currently off fighting on the Horde/Alliance front. This has left the stubborn people of Duskwood little choice but to defend themselves.

The small town now numbers a scant 3,500 people (according to the WOW RPG books) a great deal of them refugees from Raven Hill. Lord Ello Ebonlocke is the elected mayor of this town. His daughter, Commander Althea Ebonlocke, runs the Night Watch, a local militia that works to keep the roads free and the creeping darkness back for as long as possible. They strike against the undead and worgen that plague the land. The people of Duskwood are a jumpy and suspicious lot, but they are desperate for any aid they can get against the evil that now surrounds their homes.

Darkshire Town Hall

The Darkshire Town Hall is the seat of rule for Darkshire's mayor, Lord Ello Ebonlocke. It also houses the members of the Darkshire Council as well as historians and clerks. It is located on the western edge of the Darkshire town square.

Scarlet Raven Tavern

Scarlet Raven Tavern, located in Duskwood, was once a cheerful and friendly place full of people relaxing after a hard day's work at the fields. Although the hearth has been kept warm, it now holds a more morose crowd, who sit by their tables and drink silently while the darkness presses in on the tavern outside.

Dawning Woods Catacombs

The Dawning Woods Catacombs lie beneath the Raven Hill Cemetery in Duskwood. These twisting catacombs are home to the most powerful undead in the region. Many quests take Alliance characters into the catacombs. It is best to enter with a group, as a single adventurer can get quickly overwhelmed by the swarms of undead lurking in the darkness. The catacombs have two separate entrances. The eastern one leads into a den of ghouls, of the most disease-riddled and ferocious kind. The western entrance leads into a hall of skeletons, guarding the tombs of their former brethren.

Forlorn Rowe

The Forlorn Rowe is located in northwestern Duskwood, on the northern edge of Raven Hill Cemetery. It is a hill cloaked in an ominous darkness, upon which the home of Morbent Fel rests. The powerful necromancer rules the forest's undead creatures through evil arcane magic, and only a special weapon can stop him. Alliance-aligned adventurers will need to do a lot of running and fighting in order to obtain this weapon.

The Hushed Bank

The Hushed Bank is the stretch of Duskwood along the western river. It runs from where the river forks and the three corners of Westfall, Elwynn Forest, and Duskwood meet south to Stranglethorn Vale. It is inhabited by spiders and wolves levels 18-21. The covered bridge connecting Duskwood and Westfall is also located on The Hushed Bank. On the northern corner of the Hushed Bank, you will find Lars and Sven Yorgen, two quest givers who may end up giving young Alliance adventurers more than they bargained for.

Knight's Hollow

Knight's Hollow is a Duskwood concept art found in The Art of World of Warcraft and on Blizzard promotional website. This location bears great resemblance to an unmarked grave behind Beggar's Haunt in Duskwood. There are currently two statues and a waterfall right next to the grave.

Manor Mistmantle

Manor Mistmantle is the family stead of the Mistmantle family. It is located in northeastern Duskwood, north of Darkshire and west of Beggar's Haunt. The lone survivor of the Mistmantle legacy is Stalvan Mistmantle, a former school teacher and personal tutor who is now an agent of the undead. The manor grounds are rotten and overrun by Stalvan's ghoulish minions. The only sign of life on the property is a single flower in the garden, known as the Tear of Tilloa.

Raven Hill

Raven Hill is an abandoned town located in western Duskwood, north of Addle's Stead and south of the Raven Hill Cemetery. The village now holds only a few living persons - Jitters, an Alliance-friendly NPC whom players interact with for several quest series (in particular, the quest series leading up to Morbent Fel), and Bliztik the goblin vendor, who hides on the top floor of one of the buildings. Beyond Raven Hill lies the large town cemetery. This is where a lot of the higher-level Duskwood quests take you.

Tip: If you're going to do quests in Raven Hill, rather than running from Darkshire, fly to Sentinel Hill in Westfall and run to the cemetery from there, as it's closer.

Raven Hill Cemetery

Raven Hill Cemetery is the sprawling graveyard located north of the abandoned town of Raven Hill in Duskwood. The cemetery is crawling with scores of Undead as well as massive spiders and gangs of grave robbers who will attack anyone interrupting their morbid tasks. Many quests in Duskwood involve Raven Hill Cemetery. The hill in the northwest corner of the cemetery is Forlorn Rowe, home to Morbent Fel. At the northeast corner, past the quarter of the cemetery containing the entrance to Dawning Woods Catacombs, you can find the small shack with the NPC Abercrombie inside. Stay alert when traveling through the cemetery, as Mor'Ladim (a level 35 elite) patrols the cemetery and spells certain doom for adventurers he catches unaware.

Roland's Doom

Roland's Doom is the mine which the Scythe of Elune apparently resides. The mine, now Worgen-infested, is where Jitters first found the Scythe, releasing the Worgen and in time the Dark Riders upon Duskwood and Darkshire, condemning them to permanent darkness. The Scythe was originally left there by a Night Elf who sought control of the Worgen in hopes of controlling an army of the creatures to aid in an ongoing battle with demons in Ashenvale. The Worgen population grew out of control, however, as the young Night Elf traveled from Ashenvale through the Barrens, then across the great sea to Stranglethorn Vale. From there she traveled to Roland's Doom in search of a way to stop the Worgen and destroy the scythe. Instead, she met her fate, leaving the portal open for more Worgen to come through. The mine is now the location of Gutspill and Nefaru, who lead the worgen at the Rotting Orchard.

The Rotting Orchard

The Rotting Orchard is located in southern Duskwood, east of the Yorgen Farmstead, and west of the Tranquil Gardens Cemetery. It was once a bright fruit orchard loaded with apples, pears, and peaches. Now the orchard lies abandoned, the fruit fallen and rotting in the fields. Recently, the orchard has become home to many ravenous Worgen led by Gutspill and Nefaru at the nearby Roland's Doom.

Tranquil Gardens Cemetery

The Tranquil Gardens Cemetery lies slightly southeast of Darkshire in Duskwood. While the presence of many undead has made the cemetery anything but tranquil, the undead here are the weakest you will find in Duskwood. The first quests The Night Watch give you involve dispatching the undead in this area. The Insane Ghoul is also located here, either inside the ruined church, or wandering about outside. Just north of the cemetery lies Blind Mary's house.

Twilight Grove

The 'Twilight Grove' is a mysterious, forested grove located in the crater of an extinct volcano in the middle of Duskwood. Apparently the only place in Duskwood free of the curse and corruption that effects the rest, this place is lush, beautiful, peaceful and has no enemies. These traits owe themselves to one thing; the Twilight Grove is home to one of the four portals to the Emerald Dream guarded by the green dragons of Ysera's Green Dragonflight. Though the portal is currently closed, many wonder what lies beyond.

Vul'Gol Ogre Mound

The Vul'Gol Ogre Mound is a small basin in southern Duskwood. It is completely overrun by Vul'gor Ogres. It is located just to the southwest of where the main road through Duskwood splits and runs south into Stranglethorn Vale. A few quests require you to recover items from the debris scattered around the area or occasionally from one of the Ogres. The ogre clan here is led by Zzarc'Vul, after which the mound is named.

The Yorgen Farmstead

The Yorgen Farmstead is an abandoned farm in southern Duskwood. The farm was once owned by Sven Yorgen who can be found at the small camp on The Darkened Bank. The farmstead is now in the hands of the Defias Brotherhood and their stealthed Defias assassins patrol the area.

Elwynn Forest

A land of peaceful, whispering woods, glades and farmlands, the idyllic Elwynn Forest is the location of the prosperous human city of Stormwind and the homeland of the human race. In the north is the Northshire Valley, birthplace of the Paladin's Order of the Silver Hand and the starting zone of human characters in World of Warcraft. Brackwell Pumpkin Patch

Brackwell Pumpkin Patch is a small farmstead that lies in southeast Elwynn Forest. It has been taken over by the Defias Brotherhood and their agents patrol its buildings. In the actual pumpkin patch itself players can find Princess the boar (level 9) and her loyal subjects (2 level 7s). She is a prize-winning pig responsible for eating crops at The Stonefield Farm and The Maclure Vineyards. Players get a quest to kill her.

Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake is a lake directly east of Goldshire in Elwynn Forest. It is crawling with murlocs and may be quite dangerous for an inexperienced adventurer.

It may be named after the infamous Crystal Lake from the Friday the 13th movies. Friday the 13th is a 1980 independent slasher film directed by Sean S. Cunningham and written by Victor Miller. ...

Forest's Edge

Forest Edge is an area southwest of Stormwind where Elwynn Forest borders Westfall. It is located between two rivers. Gnolls have infested the area, setting up camps throughout the entire location.

Goldshire

Goldshire is a peaceful village in Elwynn forest and is the second Human town most Human characters usually visit during their adventures sometime after level 5. Goldshire is centrallly located just southwest of Northshire and has most low level class trainers and some profession trainers. It has the first Inn that most human characters will encounter - the Lion's Pride Inn.

Goldshire has roads that lead to Stormwind city to the northwest, Northshire Abbey to the northeast, Westfall to the west, and Lakeshire (Redridge Mountains zone) to the east. Its prime location makes it an important trade town. Travellers, merchants, adventurers, Stormwind guards and priests from the abbey all stop and make regular visits to the town on their way to and from Stormwind, usually enjoying the hospitality of the Lion's Pride Inn, one of the most respectable ale houses in Azeroth.

Heavily protected and patrolled by the Stormwind guards, it sports a population of 7,000 citizens (according to Warcraft RPG books), mostly farmers, miners and traders. The leader is an elected Marshal, and the position is currently occupied by Narsgak Dughan.

Just south of Goldshire is the Fargodeep Mine, The Maclure Vineyards and The Stonefield Farm. To the east is Crystal Lake. These areas are where most of a human player's 5-8 questing will take place.

Alliance players of all levels tend to duel in Goldshire and it's a hub for role-players, mostly because of the relaxed, serene environment of Elwynn. However, this is both a blessing and a curse as while there's always something interesting in the RP world going on in Goldshire. Once more, although there are usually many Roleplayers around the Elwynn Area, it can attract the opposite.

Heroes' Vigil is the central area of the Stone Cairn Lake island in eastern Elwynn Forest. It features a ring of stones and a monument called the Stone of Memory, which commemorates the dead from the orcs' sacking of Goldshire and nearby regions during the First War. The island itself is controlled by Defias rogue wizards, who can be dangerous to inexperienced adventurers.

Jasperlode Mine

The Jasperlode Mine, like the Fargodeep Mine, was one of the key mining sites in Elwynn Forest, providing Stormwind with raw materials much needed in the wars. Lately however, the mine has, like Echo Ridge and Fargodeep, been overrun by Kobolds, and with all the soldiers tied up on the front lines against the Horde, Stormwind does not have the manpower to drive the vermin out.

Unfortunately for the Kobolds, the deepest recesses of this mine have been overrun by a colony of Mine Spiders who apparently see the hapless kobolds as a tasty snack. Although these spiders do not venture far from their nest, adventurers should beware as their queen, Mother Fang, does not approve of uninvited guests.

Jerod's Landing

Jerod's Landing is a boat landing on the southern bank of Elwynn Forest. The landing has recently been taken over by the Defias Brotherhood and they use it to smuggle stolen goods out of Elwynn. The Maclure Vineyards

The Maclure Vineyards belong to one of the two rival farmsteads in southern Elwynn Forest. The Maclure Family is in a bitter rivalry with the nearby Stonefield Family, but despite their intense dislike of each other, the children of each family have fallen in love with each other in true Romeo and Juliet fashion. There is hope that their love can bring the two families together, and there are several quests that involve the feuding families. The Maclure Vineyards are a great place to practice skinning as there are over a dozen boars in the vineyards alone. The two families are a parody of the actual Hatfield-McCoy feud which occurred in the late 19th century in the Appalachian Mountains. Image:Manny and Promil brown. ... Mirror Lake

Mirror Lake is situated in western Elwynn Forest, near an orchard. It is rather small, but nonetheless features a pretty waterfall. The lake always shines brightly in the afternoon sun, which explains the origin of its name.

Although Mirror Lake would usually be an ideal spot for swimming or fishing, the Defias bandits that infest the area make such sports hazardous.

Mirror Lake Orchard

Mirror Lake Orchard is situated in western Elwynn Forest, on the southern banks of Mirror Lake. Although the trees growing here used to produce fresh fruit, they have all been picked and eaten by Defias bandits who have taken possession of the orchard as well as the nearby cottage. History: Prior to the First War, the abbey served as the home of the Holy Order of Northshire Clerics. It was the location where Medivh was cared for during the years he was in a coma. During the course of the First War, the Clerics of Northshire, led by Archbishop Alonsus Faol, aided the armies of Stormwind in their fight against the Horde. Shortly after Garona Halforcen was captured and brought to Northshire to be held as a prisoner, the Abbey was destroyed in an orcish onslaught.

During the Second War, the site of the abbey was the headquarters of Cho'Gall's Twilight's Hammer Clan, allied to Gul'dan. After the Alliance of Lordaeron reclaimed Elwynn Forest, Northshire Abbey was rebuilt, though the area has been suffering a kobold infestation and the growing presence of bandits known as the Defias.

Stone Cairn Lake is situated in northeastern Elwynn Forest, and holds one large island that gives the lake a characteristic ring shape. The lake is named for Heroes' Vigil the stone cairn monument erected upon the island to commemorate the losses of life during the First War.

While the lake has previously been a safe place to make pilgrimages to, it has recently fallen into the hands of Defias rogue wizards, who have settled on the island. The water also holds a tribe of murlocs, who have raised crude structures on the southern banks of the lake.

The Stonefield Farm

The Stonefield Farm is one of two rival farmsteads in southern Elwynn Forest. The Stonefield family is in a bitter rivalry with the nearby Maclure family. Despite their intense dislike of each other, the children of each family have fallen in love with each other in true Romeo and Juliet fashion. There is hope that their love can bring the two families together, and to that end, there are several quests that involve the feuding families. Tower of Azora

The Tower of Azora is a small wizard tower in Eastern Elwynn Forest, named after the mysterious being Azora. The tower is run by a number of servants of Azora, who all appear to be Gnomish, and who are in turn presided over by the archmage of Azora, Theocritus. The denizens of the tower are in a constant feud with the inhabitants of the Tower of Ilgalar in Redridge Mountains, ruled over by the evil sorcerer Morganth. The two towers are constantly spying on one another through magical means.

Inside the tower are a couple of vendors, and most notably, the Artisan enchanter for Alliance.

An interview with the servants of Azora in the Gadgetzan Times shows the servants to be unable to wield magic and somewhat resentful of the abilities of their masters. It also shows that many things straying too near the tower are adversely affected by the magical aura, so the servants often have to battle living buckets and mutant butterflies.

Eye of Azora: On the table at the top floor of Tower of Azora, there is a magical artifact named Eye of Azora, which allows anyone who touches it to see the surroundings of the Tower of Ilgalar. There is no such device in Tower of Ilgalar, and is the only object of its kind in-game.

Westbrook Garrison

Westbrook Garrison is considered by some to be the last bastion of order heading away from Stormwind. The garrison is located in Forest's Edge on the western end of Elwynn Forest near the border with Westfall. Beyond the garrison lie the dry fields of Westfall, currently controlled by the agents of the Defias Brotherhood and their dreaded mechanical harvesters.

South of the garrison the forest is full of gnolls, and beyond them, only a river separates Elwynn from shadowy Duskwood. The brave defenders of the garrison work night and day to protect the citizens of Elwynn from the dangers beyond the forest.

Several wanted-posters at the garrison have been posted in hopes of aid against the rise in attacks and crime from the surrounding Gnolls.

Redridge Mountains

The Redridge Mountains are a small, peaceful, pretty, old mountain range to the east of the Elwynn Forest. Named because of their distinctive autumny orange hue. Before the First War, the town of Lakeshire was not the besieged place it is now, nestled in a nook in the rugged peaks at the bank of the lake as it is. It was protected from gnolls and bandits by Azerothian militia who were stationed at Stonewatch, as well as the benevolent mage Ilgalar.

With the coming of the orcs, however, things changed rapidly. Many of Redridge's finest men were sent to battle the coming of the Horde and never returned. Stonewatch became vulnerable with its main forces on the front, and when it caught the attention of the Blackrock clan, it was not long before a siege was underway. Although the soldiers of Redridge battled as well as they could, in the end, they could not resist capture. Both the tower and the keep was taken, and soon after, Ilgalar the mage was attacked by a rivaling mage. Ilgalar was more powerful than the evil Morganth, but Morganth had enslaved a tribe of gnolls to do his bidding, and Ilgalar could not defeat them all. Once Ilgalar was dead, Morganth took possession of his tower, and set his sights west, to the next rivaling wizard at the Tower of Azora in Elwynn.

The region around Lakeshire is now heavily contested, and the bridge connecting the town to the rest of the kingdom was recently attacked and almost destroyed. Desperate, the people of Redridge seek help from outside sources, recruiting any adventurer that stops by to help in the defense of the region.

Alther's Mill

Alther's Mill is an abandoned lumber mill located northeast of Lakeshire in the Redridge Mountains region of human lands.

Lakeridge Highway is an old highway that runs along the southern edge of Lake Everstill in Redridge Mountains. The highway was originally highly traveled in the days before the First War. Lakeshire

Lakeshire is an ancient Human town that sits on the banks of the majestic and large Lake Everstill (from which the town gets its name). 1,500 citizens -- mostly farmers, poachers and travellers -- reside there under the watchful (and often worried) eye of elected magistrate Solomon. The town is a considered a serene and quiet place. Even with the occasional incursions by the orcs, it is a prime example of how peaceful this area was before the coming of the Horde and the Great Wars.

Like Westfall and Duskwood, Redridge Mountains is also under the theoretical protection of the Stormwind army and, like them, has been left mostly to their own devices. However, there is a small guard platoon situated there and the area is still relatively quiet. The nearby Stonewatch Keep has been overun by orcs that sometimes stage small raids into the city.

Lakeshire Inn

The Lakeshire Inn in Redridge Mountains is a well-known establishment, and has kept its warm atmosphere despite the town's beleaguered state. It is a popular spot to sit down and have a chat and a drink of wine or ale, and the inn also offers bedrest to the weary traveler.

Lakeshire Town Hall

The Lakeshire Town Hall in the Redridge Mountains is an old building that has been diligently refurbished several times. It is commonly the seat of rule by the local magistrate, and the current magistrate, Solomon, is a kind and wise ruler. The town's problems with gnolls and Blackrock orcs has put him in a state of desperation, however, and he readily accepts aid from helpful adventurers.

Redridge Canyons

The Redridge Canyons form a labyrinthine network of passages nestled in the northwestern Redridge Mountains. Although it used to be a favored spot for hunting deer and mountain boar by the local populace, it has been claimed by a tribe of gnolls led by the ferocious Yowler, and it is no longer a safe place to venture.

Stonewatch

Stonewatch is the common name of the battlestation in central Redridge Mountains. It includes both the easily defensible Stonewatch Keep and the armored Stonewatch Tower, with the Stonewatch Falls cascading down a cliff face below it. The entirety of Stonewatch has fallen into the hands of the Blackrock clan under the leadership of their warchief Gath'Ilzogg, and his chief lieutenant, Tharil'zun.

Stonewatch Falls

Stonewatch Falls is located on the terminus of Lake Everstill's eastern river. It cascades down the hill below Stonewatch Keep a forms a deep lake in the nook of the eastern Redridge Mountains. A small tribe of murlocs make their home here, catching fish from the lake and erecting crude structures to sleep in.

Stonewatch Keep

Stonewatch Keep is the main structure of the human stronghold of Stonewatch, which also includes the Stonewatch Tower. They both used to be controlled by the Humans of Lakeshire but were taken by orcs of the Blackrock clan. Now the keep is controlled by the Blackrock warlord Gath'Ilzogg and his trusted lieutenant, Tharil'zun.

By using a magical artifact in the Tower of Azora, you are able to see the Tower of Ilgalar and it's surroundings. There is, however, no such device in the Tower of Ilgalar. Throughout the Tower of Ilgalar are dragon bones hung on display. On the top level, a small alchemy table also holds a human skull and a dragon skull. It is not known what interest Morganth has in these relics.

Zul'Gurub

Located in north-eastern Stranglethorn Vale. Over a thousand years ago the powerful Gurubashi Empire was torn apart by a massive civil war. An influential group of troll priests, known as the Atal’ai, called forth the avatar of an ancient and terrible blood-god named Hakkar the Soulflayer. Though the priests were defeated and ultimately exiled, the great troll empire collapsed upon itself. The exiled priests fled far to the north, into the Swamp of Sorrows, where they erected a great temple to Hakkar in order to prepare for his arrival into the physical world.

In time, the Atal’ai priests discovered that Hakkar’s physical form could only be summoned within the ancient capital of the Gurubashi Empire, Zul’Gurub. Unfortunately, the priests have met with recent success in their quest to call forth Hakkar — reports confirm the presence of the dreaded Soulflayer in the heart of the Gurubashi ruins.

In order to quell the blood god, the trolls of the land banded together and sent a contingent of High Priests into the ancient city. Each priest was a powerful champion of the Primal Gods— Bat, Panther, Tiger, Spider, and Snake--but despite their best efforts, they fell under the sway of Hakkar. Now the champions and their Primal God aspects feed the awesome power of the Soulflayer.

Northern Kalimdor

Home of the night elves and the center of their civilization, this forest covered region has seen two invasions from the Burning Legion.

Teldrassil

Located off the northwestern coast of Kalimdor lies the giant tree Teldrassil, which is planted in the Ocean. The new home of the night elves after the defeat of the Burning Legion at Mount Hyjal, their capital of Darnassus lies within its beautiful forested interior. But despite its beauty it was created for selfish reasons by the druid Frandral Staghelm, who, hoping to hasten the return of the night elve's cherished immortality after the near destruction of the world tree Nordrassil, grew a new world tree but it was not blessed by the night elve's patron dragon and soon corruption began to grow and fester inside its tranquil forests. Azuremyst Isles

The Azuremyst Isles are a small island chain located to the southwest of Teldrassil. There was once a night elf presence on these islands and some ruins still exist, but it was abandoned and the area uninhabited save for the local wildlife and a tribe of furbolgs known as the Stillpine. They are friendly towards the Alliance and like the Timbermaw, they are free of the corruption that swept over their race.

Long isolated and not having much attention paid to them, that state of affairs changed when a large explosion ripped a hole in the sky above the island, from which the Exodar appeared and crash landed. The draenei now claim these lands as their own, however the out of the way location meant the other races did not immediately know of their presence. The draenei established contact with the Alliance and formally joined them in their fight. The scattered parts of the Exodar found across the region have had some unusual effects on the area so the draenei devote some of their effort to investigating these changes and cleaning up the damage. The Exodar, capital city of the Draenei The Exodar is the Draenei capital in the fantasy Warcraft Universe. ... Draenei as seen in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade. ...

Azuremyst Isle

Azuremyst Isle is the southern island of the chain, so named because of the azure pines that dot the island's landscape. The Exodar's crash has not had a catastrophic effect on the environment, but the problems are still apparent.

Ammen Vale

Draenei just beginning their service can be found here, awakening from the escape pods that left the Exodar as it made its way to the surface. A large portion of the Exodar crashed in the Vale, serving as the training center for new draenei of the Alliance.

Azure Watch

Azure Watch is a draenei outpost set between Ammen Vale and the Exodar.

Silvermyst Isle

Silvermyst was home to a small night elf fishing village. When the Exodar appeared in the skies, crystalline fragments crashed into the village, and its irradiation maddened the moonkin residing there, resulting in their killing the inhabitants.

Stillpine Hold

Stillpine Hold is the home of the furbolgs of the Stillpine tribe. Though the furbolgs of Azuremyst are uncorrupted, the moonkin of Azuremyst are not. The Azuremyst moonkin overran the Hold and forced the furbolg to the outside, where they try to retake their home from the moonkin. In the depths resides a beast known as the Kurken...according to Stillpine prophecy, a chosen one will defeat the Kurken and restore the Stillpine to their home.

Valaar's Berth

Valaar's Berth is a port that connects the Azuremyst Isles to mainland Kalimdor.

Bloodmyst Isle

Once known as Silvergale, the environment of this island was very much like Azuremyst Isle. The irradiated fragments of the Exodar, however, began to turn as red as blood, and tainted the sky and soil of the island.

Bladewood

A tainted wood that is controlled by the Sunhawks, blood elves sent by Kael'thas Sunstrider to reclaim the Exodar.

Bloodcurse Isle

Bloodcurse Isle is a small island off the eastern coast of Bloodmyst, controlled by the naga (who appear to have taken up places in most of the night elf ruins on these islands). This area is afflicted with a curse, affecting both the naga and the ghosts of the many voyagers who have passed through this area. At the top of this island is a shrine to Azshara, Empress of Nazjatar, the progenitor of the naga. Destroying it will draw out Atoph, the leader of the bloodcursed naga.

Blood Watch

The primary draenei outpost on Bloodmyst Isle, built from pieces of the Exodar.

The Sun Gate

The Sun Gate is a one-way portal from Tempest Keep to Bloodmyst Isle, where Kael'thas sends reinforcements to retake the Exodar. The gate hovers above a pool of water to the south of the Vector Coil.

The Vector Coil

The Vector Coil is the power core and (possibly, judging by its name) some kind of navigation device of the Exodar that separated during its fiery descent. The Vector Coil is crashed on the western edge of Bloodmyst Isle, and is used by the Sunhawk blood elves as their base, led by an eredar named Sironas. In addition to fulfilling Kael'thas' commands to retake the Exodar, Sironas is also trying to turn draenei into man'ari eredar in the service of the Burning Legion.

The Warp Piston

The Warp Piston appears to have been the "engine" that allowed the Exodar to travel through the dimensional planes. Now crashed on the northern edge of the island, the Warp Piston was the original location of the Sun Gate, but it has since been moved to an area near the Vector Coil. The area around the Piston teems with void creatures, remnants left behind by the Sun Gate's opening.

Wyrmscar Island

Wyrmscar Island, off the northeastern tip of Bloodmyst Isle, was apparently some kind of sanctum for the Green Dragonflight. The spirits of the whelps of the flight have become agitated by an act of sacrilege on the part of the radiation-maddened owlkin who reside on Bloodmyst, who took the bones of the dragonkin here and used them in their rituals. The spirit of a night elf Dragon-Rider of Loreth'Aran, Prince Toreth, resides on this island, as does the angry spirit of a former lieutenant of Deathwing, a black dragon named Razormaw.

The Exodar

The Exodar was a satellite of the naaru fortress of Tempest Keep. One month ago, the survivors of the draenei in Outland, led by the Prophet Velen, raided the Exodar and tried to use it to escape from Outland. Yet the blood elves in the service of Prince Kael'thas sabotaged the Exodar's dimensional propulsion, causing them to jump across the Twisting Nether to the world of Azeroth, where it screamed across the skies of northern Kalimdor before crashing on the western coast of Azuremyst Isle. There it remains, to serve as the capital of the draenei on Azeroth.

Darkshore

Located in the northwestern corner of Kalimdor is the night elf territory of Darkshore. The main port of call for travel from the Eastern Kingdoms, Teldrassil and Azuremyst Isle is located here in the fishing town of Auberdine. Clouds and rain cover most of this forested region giving the area its name. Two Highborne or Quel'dorei, ruins can be found here, Bashal'Aran in the north and Ameth'Aran in the south. But naga and highborne spirits haunt the area keeping visitors from getting too close. The eastern mountain range acts as a natural barrier from the corruption that claimed Felwood and deep inside the mountains a secretive clan of trolls have made their home. Furbolg camps have sprung up by the normally peaceful animals, however the satyrs in the area have begun to corrupt them.

Ashenvale

Connecting Darkshore and Azshara is the ancestral home of the Night elves, Ashenvale. Large forests cover this area and the orcs prize it for lumber for their war machines and towns. The largest night elf city is Astranaar located in the middle of a lake to the northwest. In the southeast lies the Warsong Lumber Camp and north of it is another Horde controlled outpost called Splintertree Post. This area is dotted with Quel'Dorei ruins controlled by either the satyrs or moss-covered creatures. In the southeastern corner is a place teeming with demons called Fel Fire Hill. It was here that the orc hero Grom Hellscream slew the pit lord Mannoroth and freed the orcs from the bloodlust that had enslaved them for so long. But within its dark and foreboding valleys lies a monument to the final resting place of the orc hero Grom Hellscream. It was here that Thrall and Grom confronted the pit lord Mannoroth and killed him thus freeing the orcs from their bloodlust and giving them freedom from the Burning Legion. Mannoroth's massive blade, broken in two pieces, can still be found here.

Warsong Lumber Camp

Founded by Grom Hellscream shortly after the Horde landed in Kalimdor, this camp serves as the main logging camp for the orcs on Kalimdor. It was here that the orcs first encountered the night elves and it was nearby that Grom and his fellow Warsong orcs killed the demi-god Cenarius while under the influence of Mannoroth's blood.

Moonglade

Moonglade is a small forest, with scenery similar to that of Teldrassil. Lake Elune'ara dominates the center of this place. The largest and only town, Nighthaven is built on the northern shores. In the eastern corner are the Barrow Dens where the night elf druid Malfurion Stormrage sleeps in the Emerald Dream. Its inhabitants are those of the Cenarion Circle, a druidic band consisting of the only two races who have taken up the druid teachings, the tauren and night elves. Moonglade also holds harmless critters, but around certain holidays, it is home to a strange creature named Omen, a two-headed wolf giant. Malfurion Stormrage (or sometimes just Furion Stormrage) is a Night Elf druid from the Warcraft Universe. ...

Felwood

Located in between Darkshore and Mount Hyjal is the corrupted woods of Felwood. Once a thriving forest it suffered greatly during the second coming of the Burning Legion, even more so after their defeat when the corrupt Skull of Gul'dan was placed by the dreadlords. Although Illidan Stormrage removed the artifact, the damage was done. Trees drip green poison on the ground and there are toxic pools everywhere. The animals and the furbolgs are corrupted themselves and will attack any travelers that venture too close. Demons and satyrs control most of these woods now. What is worse is that the Shadow Council has taken over many of the elven ruins and worship the dreadlords and other demons that hide deep inside the ruins. At the north eastern corner a tribe of uncorrupted Timbermaw furbolgs guard the entrance to the sacred Moonglade and will allow passage to anyone who helps to kill their corrupted bretheran. The only way into this region is through Winterspring. In the northern half the village of Starfall serves as a training center for night elves who wish to ride frostsabers. In the center of the land lies the goblin trading town of Everlook. The only path to the sacred Mount Hyjal, Darkwhisper Gorge, lies in the southern corner. It is patrolled by a myriad of demons.

Azshara

Named for the former night-elf queen, Azshara, this land was once the seat of power of the night elf kingdom. In the capital city of Eldarath, built around the first Well of Eternity, they ruled over the land of Kalimdor. When the Great Sundering occurred this land was torn apart into twin peninsulas. Now covered in a perpertual autumn, this land still hurts from the catastrophe ten thousand years ago. Not even the Alliance and Horde will set up any towns in this location. Only a small outpost lies at the border to Ashenvale. This area is controlled by the naga living inside the ruins of the former capital and along its coast. Small camps, settlements and even a few towns can be found, mercenaries and wandering merchants and warriors can be found everywhere, the wildlife is exotic and abundant. Theramore Isle

Theramore is the largest island of a small chain off the coast of Dustwallow Marsh. Jaina Proudmoore, the daughter of Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, founded the human bastion there. Unfortunately, the island was soon occupied by Kul Tiras forces under the command of Admiral Proudmoore, who used it to stage a war against the Horde. The Horde, under the leadership of their visionary warchief Thrall, and with the help of the wandering Beastmaster Rexxar, attacked Theramore Isles in defense of their newly founded kingdom of Durotar. The Horde successfully invaded the citadel located on the island and put an end to the Admiral's life. After the battle the Horde left the island untouched and in peace. Though most residents are human refugees from Lordaeron, there is also a large minority of High Elves who had sailed for Kalimdor before the Scourge's attack on Quel'Thalas. Many of the inhabitants and soldiers of Theramore are very likely survivors of the Battle of Hyjal, during which the Alliance played an important defensive role. Jaina Proudmoore is the governor in town, which consists of many vendors, trainers and a Gryphon Master. Theramore Isle is even referred to some as a city. Although part of the Alliance, the human citizens of Theramore do not consider themselves under the jurisdiction of Stormwind.

Great Dragonblight, The

The Dragonblight is the 'dragon's graveyard', a place where all dragonflights come to die. Near the borders of Dragonblight once existed a human settlement that the Lich King used as a testing ground for the first versions of the Plague. The humans inhabiting the Dragonblight became into the first Undead Scourge of the Lich King. Months later, Kel'Thuzad became a Necromancer at the service of Ner'zhul and returned to Lordaeron to create the Cult of the Damned. Many of the Frost Wyrms of the Undead Scourge were risen from the bones of dragons at Dragonblight.

The Dragonblight has many locations of importance: the graveyard, the Wyrmrest Temple and the entrance to Azjol-Nerub Inner Kingdom. The Wyrmrest Temple is Titan-made. Storm golems, for unknown reasons, are found within. Of more concern is the presence of the blue dragonflight, which inhabits the temple as if watching or communing over the spirits of the dragons. The Wintergrasp Lake is on the northwest of Dragonblight region, and is frozen solid.

Icecrown Glacier

Arthas the Lich King lives at the Icecrown Glacier. A massive tower of ice named Icecrown came to be when Kil'jaeden sent the icy prison of Ner'zhul crashing down from the sky into the glacier. Furbolgs in Grizzly Hills saw the flashing that filled the sky as the object fell.

Over 200,000 Scourge live in Icecrown Glacier: Ghouls, Crypt Lords, Frost Wyrms, Abominations, Death Knights, Necromancers, Liches and other support forces. Beneath Icecrown, however, exist a series of caverns and tunnels built with Nerubian architecture. Ner'zhul assimilated and adapted the Nerubian architecture into the Undead Scourge's structures after the War of the Spider.

During Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Illidan was sent by Kil'jaeden to destroy Icecrown using the power of the Eye of Sargeras. Accompanied by Naga Witches to channel the spellwork, Illidan used the safety of Dalaran's ley nodes and magical shielding to create earthquakes upon Northrend in an attempt to crack the ice beneath Icecrown. The incident caused the Lich King Ner'Zhul's ice-prison to 'leak', causing him to lose mental control over large part of the Undead Scourge in Lordaeron. As consequence, Sylvanas Windrunner was able to recover her individual will and caused a Civil War in the Plaguelands, taking the Ruins of Lordaeron for her new band of Undead Forsaken.

The Lich King summoned his loyal servant Arthas the Death Knight to travel to Northrend. After Illidan's failure to destroy the Icecrown and the Lich King, Kil'jaeden gave Illidan one more chance to fulfill his mission. This time, Illidan and his Naga, and the Blood Elf forces, came to the Icecrown and initiated the rituals before the Magic Obelisks that grant access to the inner halls of the Icecrown Citadel.

King Arthas was able to defeat Illidan in combat and ascended to the top of the Icecrown Citadel. There the Lich King ordered Arthas to break his icy prison. The helmet containing the Spirit of the Lich King came loose as the frozen cell cracked open. King Arthas donned the helmet, and the Spirit of Ner'zhul and King Arthas merged into one being. Arthas had become the living vessel of the spirit of the Lich King. Sitting at the Frozen Throne, Arthas the Lich King watches over the Scourge, rebuilding the Icecrown Citadel, and gathering strength to one day unleash the Scourge against the world of Azeroth's nations once again.

Icecrown Citadel

The Icecrown Citadel, the largest Scourge fortress, is currently home to the Lich King Arthas, with a countless amount of Scourge Elite Guard. It is currently still being rebuilt.

The Great Sea

The Great Sea is a massive ocean on the planet of Azeroth which divides the continents of the Eastern Kingdoms, Kalimdor and Northrend, and contains numerous islands. In the center of it in the spot where the Well of Eternity was before the sundering of the world is a swirling vortex called the Maelstorm, beneath of which is Nazjatar, the capital of the Naga race. Being inhabited by hostile creatures such as Murlocs, Makrura, Sea Giants and Naga, and constantly at rage with fierce storms, little is known about either the above or below of the Great Sea. Nearly all of the islands in it, though some of them featuring prominently in Warcraft lore, are not accessible in World of Warcraft and little is known about them. World of Warcraft (commonly abbreviated as WoW) is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Blizzard Entertainment and is the fourth game in the Warcraft series, excluding expansion packs and the cancelled Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. ...

Balor

Little is known of the island of Balor. West of Stormwind, it was taken by the old horde during the First War and held by the Stormreaver Clan during the Second War. It is likely that it was liberated at the end of that war. With Balor's connection to Stormreaver Clan, and its location near the Tomb of Sargeras, it may have been part of the Shattered Isles. In which case it would have been altered when the Tomb rose from sea floor, and became part of the Broken Isles.

Balor does not appear on most recent maps and it is not currently accessible in the World of Warcraft. If it is part of the Broken Isles, its location is now closer to the Maelstrom. Very little else is known about it.

The Broken Isles

The Broken Isles are a mysterious chain of islands, raised up from the seafloor by Gul'dan, located south of the raging Maelstrom. Many ancient ruins can be found on these islands, including the once-mighty Night Elf city of Suramar. Amazingly, the long-lost Tomb of Sargeras is also located on one of the islands. However, since Illidan Stormrage stole the Eye of Sargeras from the tomb, the demonic forces surrounding the island have dissipated. The water between the islands is known as Stormreaver Bay. Kezan

The Isle of Kezan (sometimes spelled "Kazan") is the tropical island homeland of the Goblins. It was once inhabited by the Trolls. The Undermine (the Goblin's racial capital) is located beneath the island.

Other notable locations include, Mount Kajaro - an active volcano in the southern part of the island, Bilgewater Port on the north-west coast, Edj on the north-east coast, and Voodress Village, inhabited by Trolls.

The island of Kezan is located directly south of the Maelstrom, southwest of Zandalar. It cannot be seen on maps in the World of Warcraft but shows up in other maps in the Warcraft RPG.

The Undermine

The Undermine is the underground racial capital city of the Goblins located on Kezan in the southern seas of Azeroth. It is covered in detail in Lands of Mystery, but is not mentioned much at all in most Warcraft Lore, and only appears in some of the Warcraft RPG source books, as well as some brief mentioning in the World of Warcraft. It's unclear if it will ever be seen in World of Warcraft.

Undermine is home to the fabled goblin trade princes, who hide from Alliance and Horde authorities on Kalimdor. The princes each control their own private armies and trade fleets. As a result, Undermine is a busy place, as the goblin fortress city goes about its business.

Kul Tiras

Kul Tiras is an island nation in the Great Sea to the west of Khaz Modan. Before the First War, the far ranging merchant ships of Kul Tiras made it the most prosperous nation in the known world. When the Orcs began to raid the coastal settlements of Lordaeron, Admiral Proudmoore took it upon himself to construct an armada of warships. At the behest of his long time friend Anduin Lothar, Proudmoore has pledged the assistance of his merchant-nation to the Alliance. Although supposedly still existing and prosperous at that, as well as being steeped in warcraft lore, Kul Tiras does not currently appear in World of Warcraft. World of Warcraft (commonly abbreviated as WoW) is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by Blizzard Entertainment and is the fourth game in the Warcraft series, excluding expansion packs and the cancelled Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. ...

History: Over one-thousand years ago, the city-state of Kul Tiras was founded upon a large island west of Khaz Modan and in between Stormwind and Lordaeron. Kul Tiras developed a thriving economy based on fishing and exports. Over the years mighty fleets of merchant vessels were built and they sailed throughout the seas in search of exotic goods to trade and sell.

Over the many years the great nation of Kul Tiras thrived on exports of seafood, livestock, lumber, grain, gold, and other artifacts. Also over the years they have developed problems with pirates and raiders on the seas and on the coasts. Murlocs constantly posed a problem to those on the island. These threats, however, have become larger and more serious especially since the Second War all the way to present day.

Always possessing a heavily armed and extremely powerful fleet, Kul Tiras only used their war vessels to protect shipping passages between the mainland and the island. Upon the Second War, their war fleets were unleashed as Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore entered Kul Tiras into the Alliance and took a vow to help his old friend, Sir Anduin Lothar. Despite the first sea battle against the orcish war fleet which resulted in the destruction of the human war ships, the armada of Kul Tiras proved to be a valuable asset of the Alliance war effort. Throughout the war Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore proved to be one of the staunchest supporters of the Alliance. Even though the fleets had triumphed in the Second War, the Horde ships devastated the fleet and it never has recovered since. For this, the people of Kul Tiras hold a dire hatred for the orcs.

Several years after, the Third War erupted. Kul Tiras sent its fleets against the undead Scourge but was able to do very little. Most of the ships were destroyed, heavily damaged, or retreated back to Kul Tiras.

For reasons unknown to the people of Kul Tiras, Jaina Proudmoore, a powerful sorceress and daughter to dear Grand Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, sailed to west Kalimdor and took half of the remaining fleet with her. Several months later, the Grand Admiral, figuring out that he could not prevent Lordaeron’s fall and reckoning that his daughter may require help in the western lands took the remaining ships and sailed to meet her. Neither of the Proudmoores have returned nor has any word come back from Kalimdor. (Very unusual, since the Horde must maintain contact with the Forsaken and the Night Elves have been seen in the Eastern Kingdoms- and certainly Jaina would have sent some word back to Kul Tiras)

In the absence of his father Admiral Tandred Proudmoore is now the acting Grand Admiral of Kul Tiras. In the four years since Daelin Proudmoore’s departure Tandred has built the Kul Tiras fleet back up but it compares not to the once grand fleets of years past. With help from his lady friend Captain Misham Waycrest they do their best to destroy the Murlocs, Naga, and pirates that threaten the coasts and vessels of our Great Nation of Kul Tiras. Tandred does what he can with the fewer ships and fewer men available but does not quite fill his father’s shoes.

People and Culture: The people of Kul Tiras are wealthy, especially compared to the ravaged northern lands, and proud of their nation. They wear traditional green and fly flags with Kul Tiras’s anchor emblem. Like Hillsbrad’s citizens, Kul Tiras’s people celebrate Hordefall every year. They hate the Scourge for wiping out the rest of their continent; they hate naga, murlocs and pirates for sinking their ships and stealing their resources; and they hate orcs for decimating their fleets in the Second War. They are staunch members of the Alliance and friends of Ironforge.

The citizens of Kul Tiras possess a deep-seated anxiety. Their eyes dart about. Often looking to the west, where the greatest leaders of Kul Tiras and many of their warriors vanished, they wonder if they will ever again see their missing families. They are glad to have a Proudmoore as their leader, but all know that Tandred is not the man his father was.

Soldiers of Kul Tiras bearing its tabard include Lieutenant Benedict, Watch Commander Zalaphil, Kul Tiras Marines and Kul Tiras Sailors.

Geography: Kul Tiras is a large island off Khaz Modan’s west coast, between Stormwind and Lordaeron. The unsettled areas are covered with rolling hills and sparse evergreen woods. Nearby Crestfall, immediately off the northeast coast, and farther Tol Barad, in the same direction, are also parts of Kul Tiras. Kul Tiras is temperate, though subject to sudden ocean storms. The nation is also very windy, which makes zeppelin rides perilous. Wild game includes few forest creatures such as foxes, squirrels and the occasional black bear. Kul Tiras’s shores possess good fishing and provide ample seafood. It is said that Kul Tiras has the best lobster and king crab in all the land.

But as the night elves began to delve into the arcane magics of the Well of Eternity, the Pandaren saw the danger and chose to break ties with the elves. Leaving their own lands behind, the Pandaren travelled across the seas and built crude but beautiful cities of stone and sturdy bambus reed on an island they named Pandaria. In time they became an empire. They have kept the location of their island a secret and most are content to remain there, with only the rare few Pandaren choosing to leave and see the outside world.

A splinter group of Pandaren arrived on Kalimdor in the aftermath of the Third War and has established a settlement in the Stonetalon Mountains of Kalimdor, but it's location remains as secret as that of their island homeland.

Tol Barad

Tol Barad is an island off the coast of Khaz Modan, very near to, and often considered part of, Kul Tiras. Before the Second War, Tol Barad was a thriving province of the nation of Stromgarde. The island was also the site of a fierce battle between the Horde and Alliance. The Horde, having already conquered most of the Dwarven lands were preparing to strike out into the Northern Kingdom of Lordaeron. At the time, the island was being used as a staging point to strike back at Orc raiders. In response, Orgrim Doomhammer launched an invasion of the island. So savage was the attack that the island was rendered lifeless. Not a single tree, bush, or living thing remained, and the original fortress was razed to the ground. Tol Barad became a frightening symbol of the Horde's merciless tenacity and barbarity.

Years later, after the second war, the island nation of Kul Tiras claimed the former stronghold and established a prison over the ruins of the old fortress. It is currently used by magi from both the former nation of Dalaran and Stormwind to house dangerous renegade spellcasters. The island does not currently appear in World of Warcraft. Outland/Draenor

Main article: Outland

Draenor (referred to as Outland after its partial destruction) is the harsh home-planet of the orcs. It glares in a reddish hue and the waters seem foul, but this is misleading: the planet is capable of supporting life. It is the homeland of the orcs and other related races (ogres, Draenor giants, and draenei) that invaded Azeroth through the rift called the Dark Portal. The energies of this and subsequent portals opened by the orcs were so intense that the world was ripped apart, and nowadays, only floating islands and debris remain. The world was originally a dense green swampland, but the demonic corruption of the orcs by the Burning Legion scarred the land so thoroughly that it was left as little more than a dusty wasteland. The dominant life forms of the world were once the draenei. Gul'dan the Warlock describes these beings as "a weak people -- hardly worth the effort of our raiding sweep". After the destruction of Draenor, a few draenei remained alive on Outland, but their numbers were further crippled by the Fel Orcs led by the Pit Lord Magtheridon, who completely conquered the remains of the planet. It was not until Illidan Stormrage and his band of Blood Elves and Naga arrived that the world was freed from Magtheridon's iron grip. Hellfire Peninsula

Hellfire Peninsula is one of the surviving parts of Draenor. It is a pivotal area of Outland that has been the location of many of the most brutal battles in Warcraft history. This is where the other side of the Dark Portal is located. One of its past cities include Hellfire Citadel and Zeth'kur.

As its name implies, Hellfire Peninsula is a grim place. Aesthetically, the ground looks like it does in Durotar: reddish in hue, and hard-packed. There is one key exception, though -- when people travel on the ground, they speak of hearing bones cracking and shattering beneath their feet. These would be the remains of the countless draenei that the blood-crazed orcs systematically slaughtered prior to bringing their war to Azeroth. The skies above are open to the heavens, and green channels of energy - the essence of the Twisting Nether itself - can be seen from horizon to horizon.

Expedition Armory

Presumably the first base of the Alliance, the Armory was destroyed during the Battle of Hellfire Peninsula. It is haunted today by the ghosts of the dead, now known as the Unyielding.

Falcon Watch

Falcon Watch is an outpost west of Hellfire Citadel, set up by blood elves seeking to welcome pilgrims from Quel'Thalas into Outland. The outpost provides a secondary flight path to allow travellers easy access to and from Thrallmar, and is also a midway point between Thrallmar and the city of Shattrath in Terokkar Forest.

Hellfire Citadel

Located at almost dead center in the Peninsula, Hellfire Citadel was built sometime before the opening of the Dark Portal, and was intended to be the headquarters of Warchief Blackhand the Destroyer. In addition to Blackhand and his Blackrock Clan, all of the orcish clans were to abandon their ancestral grounds and take residence here. The Citadel was abandoned sometime after the orcs crossed into Azeroth. It was reclaimed by the Pit Lord Magtheridon as a base of operations in Hellfire, and eventually was taken by Illidan Stormrage when he deposed Magtheridon.

Hellfire Ramparts

The Ramparts are the first line of defense against the attackers coming through the reopened Dark Portal into Outland. The Ramparts are manned by the Bleeding Hollow and Bonechewer Clans.

The Blood Furnace

The Blood Furnace is where Magtheridon's (and later Illidan's) forces began experimenting on the uncorrupted orcs of Outland, transforming them into fel orcs by using Magtheridon's blood to corrupt them. The experimentation continues to this day. The Shadowmoon Clan, apparently the sorcerers of Illidan's fel orc legions, are the dominant clan here; in an inner chamber, Keli'dan the Breaker and five Shadowmoon warlocks maintain their hold on the imprisoned Magtheridon, who resides in the vaults below them.

The Shattered Halls

The Shattered Halls is the primary headquarters of the Warchief of Illidan's fel orcs, Kargath Bladefist. The Shattered Hand, Kargath's own clan, is the dominant clan of orcs here, though there are several Laughing Skulls and Shadowmoons present as well. This area was presumably the inner sanctum of the Warchief, when Blackhand ruled the Horde from here; the ornate nature of this room when compared to the rest of the Citadel seems to lend credence to that theory.

Magtheridon's Lair

The Pit Lord Magtheridon was the Lord of Outland in the years between its creation and the arrival of Illidan Stormrage. When Illidan deposed Magtheridon, he imprisoned the Pit Lord in a vault in the depths of Hellfire Citadel and held him there for his fel orc magisters to extract his blood to create more fel orcs.

Honor Hold

Honor Hold is the primary headquarters of the Alliance Expedition, set up sometime after the destruction of Draenor. The Hold is commanded by Danath Trollbane, one of the leaders of the Alliance Expedition, and its forces are primarily engaged against the forces of Hellfire Citadel. The Hold is the first major hub for Alliance explorers upon entering Outland.

Mag'har Post

The Mag'har, or "brown orcs", are the last uncorrupted clan of orcs in Outland. Though they primarily reside at their home ground in Nagrand, this outpost - east of the Temple of Telhamat - is their other major concentration point. Many of the residents here are injured, possibly in battle against the Legion and Illidari forces in the area. The Mag'har are often captured by Illidan's fel orc legions at Hellfire Citadel and given the Blood of Magtheridon to turn them into fel orcs themselves, giving Illidan more troops in Hellfire. The Mag'har call upon Horde adventurers to aid their plight in this region.

Path of Glory, The

The Path of Glory stretches out from the Dark Portal to the base of Hellfire Citadel. The Path is paved with bones, the bones of draenei massacred by the Horde in the years prior to the opening of the Portal. The rotting banners of the Horde still line the Path of Glory from end to end.

Stair of Destiny, The

The Stair of Destiny is the massive stone foundation of the Dark Portal in Outland, and is far larger and more ornately decorated than its exit point in Azeroth. The Stair of Destiny has become a major hub, as the Horde and the Alliance have fortified it in order to prevent the Burning Legion from surging forth into Azeroth again, as they did when the Portal reopened. Smaller mage portals from the cities of Orgrimmar and Stormwind provide both sides with reinforcements, both to fortify their bases in Hellfire and to fight off the Legion's forces at the Stair. The Stair also provides flights for both sides to reach the outposts of Honor Hold and Thrallmar without having to go through the inevitable wave of demons that battle the combined forces at the foot of the Stair.

Temple of Telhamat

The Temple of Telhamat is a draenei holy site near the border with Zangarmarsh. The Temple is a travel hub for Alliance adventurers seeking to travel into Zangarmarsh.

Thrallmar

Established by the current Horde, Thrallmar was named for the Warchief who leads the Horde to this day. Commanded by Thrall's former chief of security, Nazgrel, Thrallmar serves as the counterpart to Honor Hold in the battle against Hellfire Citadel. The outpost is the first major hub for Horde explorers upon entering Outland.

Throne of Kil'jaeden

The Throne of Kil'jaeden is a massive mountain in northern Hellfire, to the north of Thrallmar. The mountain was named by the warlock Gul'dan, who had been taught in the arts arcane by the demonlord Kil'jaeden. Gul'dan assembled the clans of the Horde to the Throne to partake of the Blood of Mannoroth before the opening of the Dark Portal. The Throne is now the location of the Legion commander in Outland, Doom Lord Kazzak.

Zeth'Gor

Zeth'Gor is a former Horde city in southeastern Hellfire Peninsula. It is now overrun with fel orcs of the Bleeding Hollow clan. There is also fel orc called Warlord Morkh inside. When you slay him, a huge green eye spawns and promises to meet you in the citadel.

Zeth'kur in Warcraft II bears a similar name and location; however, there is no evidence showing that they are the same location.

Zangarmarsh

Zangarmarsh is a hauntingly beautiful swamp covered with a forest of giant mushrooms. Though largely teeming with life, sections of the swamp have begun to die of late, and the sentient fungi of the region seek help in returning it to life. This zone is located in Outland to the west of Hellfire Peninsula.

The marshes are the home of myriad varieties of predatory invertebrates and flora, including Fungal Giants, Spore Bats and Spore Walkers.

Cenarion Refuge

The Refuge is the headquarters of the Cenarion Expedition, a group of night elves and tauren from the Cenarion Circle sent to investigate the wildlife of Outland. The Cenarion Refuge is located directly on the border between Hellfire Peninsula and Zangarmarsh.

Coilfang Reservoir

Coilfang Reservoir is the fortress of the naga in the service of Illidan. They are led by Lady Vashj, servitor of Azshara, the Empress of Nazjatar. Coilfang is actually a massive naga drainage system that is sapping the water from Zangarmarsh and drying out the lakes, leaving barren and dying land in its wake, presumably to dry up the surface and keep the water in their own fortress.

The Slave Pens

The Slave Pens are, as their name implies, where the naga keep their prisoners.

The Underbog

The Underbog is home to the last vestiges of natural life left within Coilfang Reservoir that has not been completely stamped out by the naga incursion. The only naga presence in this section defends the structure they built to house their hydra god, Ghaz'an. The rest of the Underbog is a natural habitat, home to the most powerful species of animal life in Zangarmarsh.

The Steamvault

The Steamvault is the location of a very powerful servant of Vashj, a warlord named Kalithresh.

Serpentshrine Cavern

Serpentshrine Cavern is the inner sanctum of Vashj and her top lieutenants.

Orebor Harborage

Orebor Harborage is a temple of the Kurenai, a group of Broken draenei who have rediscovered their origins, on the border with the Blade's Edge Mountains.

Telredor

Telredor is an Alliance-aligned draenei town located on top of a giant mushroom in eastern Zangarmarsh. Originally a calm settlement of draenei priests, many draenei refugees flocked to it when the orcs started attacking their villages. Telredor turned out to be an impregnable fortress, and a safe haven for many draenei. They followed Velen in joining the Alliance, and some members of allied races have come to the town to research the marshes and doing business.

Twin Spire Ruins

Twin Spire Ruins are the remains of a holy draenei site now contested by the Alliance and Horde. Two ruined towers flank the burial ground in the middle.

Zabra'jin

Zabra'jin is large Horde-aligned troll town with huts connecting to a few mushrooms and wood planks holding the other buildings above the marsh. There is a flight path located here, as well as a forge.

Terokkar Forest

Terokkar Forest is located in southern Outland - west of Shadowmoon Valley, southwest of Hellfire Peninsula, south of Zangarmarsh, and east of Nagrand. The forest is presumably named after the avian god Terokk, master of the arakkoa that inhabit this area.

Allerian Stronghold

The Allerian Stronghold, named for Alleria Windrunner, is the Alliance outpost in southern Terokkar, at the base of the Skethyl Mountains on the northern edge of the Bone Wastes. The Stronghold mixes human architecture with that of Alleria's people, the high elves.

The Bone Wastes

The Bone Wastes are located on the southern edge of Terokkar Forest. Though they appear to have existed as long ago as the Second War, the Bone Wastes in their current state were created when the Shadow Council summoned Murmur, the primordial essence of sound, and caused an explosion which destroyed their fortress of Auchindoun. The Wastes are inhabited by various creatures, including members of the Shadow Council and the spirits of the draenei who have been interred in Auchindoun over the centuries.

Auchindoun

Auchindoun is located in the center of the Bone Wastes. Before the corruption of the orcs, Auchindoun was a draenei necropolis, where all who had fallen in the defense of their race were laid to rest; often, the Prophet Velen presided over such burial ceremonies. The first naaru to be interred there was D'ore, who was killed when the draenei's interdimensional vessel, now known as Oshu'Gun, crash-landed in Nagrand. During the rise of the Horde, it was claimed as a fortress by the Bleeding Hollow Clan.

After the Horde's defeat and the creation of Outland, Auchindoun was taken by the remnants of the Shadow Council, who summoned the elemental called Murmur for their own nefarious purposes. The power of that summoning was enough to cause an explosion that tore Auchindoun apart and led to the creation of the present-day Bone Wastes. Now Auchindoun is split between various factions - renegade ethereal smugglers, draenei death priests known as the Auchenai, arakkoa rebels, and the Shadow Council.

The Mana-Tombs

The Mana-Tombs are being plundered by ethereals in opposition to the Consortium - a group of intergalactic traders and smugglers seeking to do business in Outland. The Consortium wish to destroy the opposition, but are unable to enter as the leader of the enemy ethereals, Nexus-Prince Shaffar, has installed anti-ethereal fields at the entrance.

The Auchenai Crypts

The Auchenai Crypts appear to be the basis for Auchindoun, as it was the location of the first burial - that of the naaru D'ore, who was killed when Oshu'gun crash-landed on Draenor. Now the Auchenai - a shadowy clan of draenei necromancers, corrupted by the void energies of D'ore's "death cycle" - are raising the spirits of the draenei interred here to serve them.

The Sethekk Halls

The Sethekk are a renegade clan of arakkoa who were exiled from Skettis and made their way to Auchindoun, where they reside today. They are led by Talon-King Ikiss, who believes himself to be the reincarnation of the arakkoa hero/god, Terokk, and expects all arakkoa to bow before him as their ruler. The Sethekk have stolen the three relics of Terokk - his mask, his spear, and his writings - and hold them within their fortified base.

The Shadow Labyrinth

The Shadow Labyrinth is the current headquarters of the Shadow Council in Outland. It was from here that the Council summoned Murmur, the primordial essence of sound, in order to advance their nefarious plans. The Council still remains, under the command of the orcish Grandmaster Vorpil.

Cenarion Thicket

The Cenarion Thicket was an outpost set up in Terokkar between Shattrath and the ruined draenei town of Tuurem. But for some reason, every single druid in the outpost is dead, except for their leader, Warden Treelos - and he has descended into madness. It is later revealed that the blood elves under Kael'thas Sunstrider hired a Broken draenei to enter the Thicket and set off a mana bomb - an insidious device that can be used to kill mana users. The mana bomb's effects also had an effect on the local teromoths, mutating them and making them hostile to travellers.

Firewing Point

A base of operations for Kael'thas Sunstrider's blood elves in Terokkar. They appear to have been responsible for the mana-bombing of the Cenarion Thicket. There is another bomb being prepared in the courtyard, and a blood elf paladin named Sharth Voldoun holds the final code to set it off. Those in the service of the Scryers can kill these blood elves and take their signets back to Shattrath as proof of their killing a low-ranked servitor of Kael'thas.

Refugee Caravan

A group of refugees from Shattrath's Lower City, stranded on the northern edge of the Bone Wastes between Auchindoun and Shattrath. There are a variety of races here - draenei, orcs, humans, dwarves, and even an arakkoa or two.

Skettis

Skettis is the capital of the arakkoa, and the seat of power of their nefarious master, Terokk. Skettis is located in the Skethyl Mountains northeast of Auchindoun, in a flat area known as Blackwind Valley. The city appears to be made up of several veils, or towns, along the shore of Blackwind Lake: Ala'rak, Harr'ik, and Upper and Lower Shi'lak. At the center of Blackwind Lake is an area known as Terokk's Rest, where an ancient pile of skulls in a summoning circle can be used to summon Terokk back into the world. The air is patrolled by monstrous kaliri, and the arakkoa here are legion.

The Sha'tari Skyguard, an airborne military force from Shattrath City, makes its camp at Blackwind Landing, just to the north of Skettis. Here they plan operations against the arakkoa - bombing runs of their kaliri eggs, rescuing downed scouts, and destroying the command structure of Skettis.

Stonebreaker Post

Stonebreaker Post is the Horde outpost in Terokkar, located along the northern edge of the Bone Wastes, northwest of Allerian Stronghold. Stonebreaker appears to use "native" orc architecture, rather than the architecture seen at Horde outposts such as Thrallmar.

Veils of Skettis

In addition to the veils that comprise Skettis itself, there are several veils of arakkoa scattered across Terokkar, with different purposes - all in the name of their master, Terokk.

Veil Lithic

Veil Lithic is located along the western edge of the Bone Wastes. It is here that Terokk's minions corrupt avians - Outland's native owl population - for use in his legions.

Veil Reskk

Veil Reskk is a former draenei shrine taken over by the arakkoa in northern Terokkar, near the border with Hellfire Peninsula. It is here that one of the Eyes of Skettis, a scrying orb used by Terokk to see his domain, is kept.

Veil Rhaze

Veil Rhaze is on the northwestern corner of the Bone Wastes. When Auchindoun exploded, Rhaze was destroyed and its inhabitants killed, but Terokk has raised the spirits of the dead to continue to do his bidding.

Veil Shalas

Veil Shalas is at the base of the Skethyl Mountains, directly below Skettis, on the eastern edge of the Bone Wastes. Here, Terokk's sages continue their war against the Light.

Veil Shienor

Veil Shienor is located across the road from Veil Reskk, near the border with Hellfire Peninsula. The other Eye of Skettis is located here.

Veil Skith

Veil Skith is located directly south of Shattrath. Skith is the location of the Darkstone of Terokk, an evil crystal used as an altar of worship by the arakkoa.

Shattrath City

Shattrath City is the only capital-sized city in Outland. It is set between the forest of Terokkar and the plains of Nagrand.

Originally, Shattrath was the capital of the draenei when they settled on the world they came to call Draenor. Shortly before the opening of the Dark Portal, the orcish Horde laid waste to Shattrath and killed much of its population. Some draenei priests, known as the Aldor, remained and continued their observance to the Light in one of its ruined temples. It was this activity that gained the attention of the Sha'tar, the naaru who had come to Outland to battle the Burning Legion. The Sha'tar and the Aldor began rebuilding the city, but then came under attack again - this time by the legions of Illidan Stormrage, Lord of Outland.

An army of Kael'thas' blood elves had been sent by Illidan to lay waste to Shattrath. But the blood elves, in a standoff against the draenei defenders, laid down their weapons. Their commander, Voren'thal the Seer, strode into the Terrace of Light at the city center and demanded an audience with A'dal, the naaru master of Shattrath. Upon seeing the naaru, Voren'thal knelt before him and pledged his army to the service of the naaru, believing them to be the only chance for the blood elves to survive. The blood elf defectors became known as the Scryers, and now both inhabit Shattrath hoping to curry the favor of A'dal and the Sha'tar.

Aldor Rise

The Aldor Rise is located on the western side of Shattrath, bordering the plains of Nagrand. The Aldor is an order of draenei priests formerly led by the Prophet Velen, who has since travelled to the world of Azeroth. The Aldor are now led by the High Priestess Ishahnah. The Aldor's primary enemy is the Burning Legion - which has been the enemy of the draenei race since their expulsion from Argus thousands of years earlier.

Lower City

The Lower City makes up much of the outer circle of Shattrath, from the Aldor Rise to the Scryer's Tier. Here, the refugees of every war ever fought in Outland - from the war of extermination against the draenei to the current battle against the Burning Legion and the forces of Illidan - live under the protection of the Sha'tar. It is also where the battlemasters of both sides congregate to allow forces of the Alliance and the Horde to continue fighting for their respective armies.

In an Inn in the lower city you might find Harris Pilton, an obvious reference to today's pop star Paris Hilton (World of Warcraft is rife with such references).

Scryers' Tier

The Scryer's Tier, in southern Shattrath, is where the blood elf defectors under Voren'thal set up their operations after being accepted by the naaru. The Scryers' primary enemy is Kael'thas Sunstrider, their once-beloved prince, who betrayed both Illidan and his own people by allying with the eredar lord Kil'jaeden, the current supreme commander of the Burning Legion.

Terrace of Light

The Terrace of Light is the heart of Shattrath, centered around a great temple where A'dal, master of the Sha'tar, rules over Shattrath. It is here that the human archmage Khadgar, commander of the Alliance Expedition to Draenor twenty years earlier, maintains portals to the capitals back on Azeroth - Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus and the Exodar for the Alliance, and Orgrimmar, the Undercity, Thunder Bluff and Silvermoon for the Horde. The quartermasters of the Sha'tar also reside here, giving powerful items to those who prove their worth in the service of Shattrath.

Nagrand

Nagrand means "Land of Winds" in the orc tongue, and is located west of Shattrath City and south of Zangarmarsh. This area was once sacred ancestral meeting grounds for the orcish clans before their corruption by the Burning Legion, where they would hunt the clefthoof and talbuk that roamed here, and give praise to the spirits. The last uncorrupted clan of orcs, known as the Mag'har, makes their home here, as do a faction of Broken draenei called the Kurenai. The Consortium, a group of ethereals who conduct trade and smuggling operations on various worlds, also has a camp here.

Aeris Landing

Located north of Oshu'gun, Aeris Landing is the encampment of the Consortium in Nagrand. Originally, this was there the Consortium planned on mining Oshu'gun - the largest diamond in the known universe - but the operation was put on hold by their leader, Nexus-Prince Haramad, due to a political situation in the Netherstorm. Nevertheless, the Consortium still does business in Nagrand, harvesting tusks from the elekks that roam the plains, as well as crystal fragments from Oshu'gun harvested from renegade ethereals.

Garadar

Garadar, named for the Frostwolf chieftain Garad (father of Durotan), is the compound of the Mag'har in Nagrand. The Mag'har are led by Garad's widow, Greatmother Geyah. Here they do battle against Murkblood Broken who slaughtered their brethren at Sunspring Post, as well as the armies of ogres that have taken over the ruined ancestral compounds of the Laughing Skull and Burning Blade clans. Their greatest enemy, as it has been for generations, is the influence of the Burning Legion - elements of the Shadow Council reside in the nearby fortress of Kil'sorrow. They have also become concerned with the state of events at their sacred mountain of Oshu'gun.

Halaa

Halaa is an abandoned draenei village in the center of Nagrand. Because of its strategic location, it has become a focal point of battle between the Alliance and the Horde in this area.

Kil'sorrow Fortress

Kil'sorrow is a fortress of the Shadow Council, populated entirely by corrupted orcs. Their warlocks join with demons in the depths of Oshu'gun, and their leaders have been marked for death by both the Mag'har and the Kurenai.

Oshu'gun

Oshu'gun, or Mountain of Spirits in Orcish, was the naaru dimensional craft used to lead Velen and the exiled eredar, known as the draenei, from their homeworld of Argus. It traversed across the Twisting Nether until it came upon Draenor. It crash-landed on Draenor about two hundred years before the First War, killing one of the naaru onboard, D'ore. Oshu'gun became the orcs' sacred mountain, for the spirits were drawn to it by a great power they believed to be of the elements; in truth, it was the void energies of the dying naaru K'ure, bringing souls to him to transform into shadows. Velen had attempted to commune with K'ure before the mass genocide began, but was captured by Durotan and the Frostwolf Clan, who believed the idea that the spirits were summoned to the draenei's "god" was blasphemous.

Oshu'gun is also described as the largest diamond in the known universe, and the Consortium became very interested in harvesting it. However, they did not realize the extent of the naaru's association with it - and the Consortium did not wish to anger the naaru by taking it indiscriminately.

Today, Oshu'gun's interior is crawling with demons and orc warlocks from nearby Kil'sorrow Fortress, who drain the shadow energies of the dying K'ure and utilize them to corrupt the spirits of the orcish ancestors.

The Ring of Trials

The Ring of Trials was formerly a proving ground for orcish warriors, presumably used by the early Horde for gladiatorial contests when they were not battling the draenei. The Ring of Trials is part of the Steamwheedle Cartel's arena dueling organization.

Telaar

Telaar is the compound of the Kurenai, which in the draenei tongue means "redeemed". These Broken draenei seek to find their destiny somewhere in Outland, and have made Nagrand their home. Like the Mag'har, they battle against the Murkbloods and the ogres of Nagrand, and also against the nearby forces of the Burning Legion.

The Throne of the Elements

The Throne of the Elements is a place of deep spiritual significance to orcish shamans, where manifestations of the elements reside and call on adventurers to do battle against the corruption that has gripped the land. Members of the Earthen Ring, a council of shamans who operate similarly to the druidic Cenarion Circle, can be found here.

Blade's Edge Mountains

The Blade's Edge Mountains is located to the north of Zangarmarsh, serving as the only means of entering the "islands" of Netherstorm. It is a region full of knife-sharp mountain crags and axe-cut valleys, extremely dangerous to navigation. The region is also rife with demons and warped wildlife, as well as ogres and their gronn overlords.

Circle of Blood

The Circle of Blood is an enormous arena in the Daggermaw Canyon that runs through the center of the Mountains. It is one of the rings sanctioned by the Steamwheedle Cartel for arena fighting.

Dragon's End

Deathwing the Destroyer, Aspect of the Black Dragonflight, brought many of his flight into Draenor when he made his lair here. Many of them have travelled to the Blade's Edge Mountains, where they terrorize the skies. However, many black dragons can be seen in an area of the Daggermaw Canyon known as Dragon's End, impaled on the razor-sharp spikes of the Mountains. It is unknown how they ended up there; some believe they crashed into them, while others believe that the dragonslaying gronn put them there as symbols of their dominance.

Evergrove

Set inside the boughs of Ruuan Weald, Evergrove is an outpost of the Cenarion Expedition, who (along with forces from Darnassus as well as elements of the Mag'har) are trying to restore the natural wildlife of the desolate mountains.

Grishnath

Grisnath is a settlement of the arakkoa in the Raven's Wood, one of the largest arakkoa cities outside of Skettis itself.

Gruul's Lair

The supreme overlord of the ogres is an enormous and bloodthirsty gronn known as Gruul the Dragonkiller. He and his seven sons cruelly subjugate the ogre clans of Outland. Gruul and the puppet High King of the ogres, Maulgar, reside in a large cave at the northern end of the Daggermaw Canyon.

Mok'Nathal Village

The Mok'Nathal - "Sons of Nath" - were a clan of half-orc/half-ogres who were once believed to be extinct; Rexxar, the Champion of the Horde, was believed to be the last. However, it has been revealed that they survive, albeit in small numbers, and they reside in a small village in eastern Blade's Edge. There they are led by the Beastmaster Leoroxx, father of Rexxar. They battle against the Bloodmaul clan of ogres, dominated by the Sons of Gruul.

Ogri'la

Similar to the Buddhist mystic city of Shambhala and the fictional valley of Shangri-La, Ogri'la is a plateau of enlightenment populated by ogres who have transcended beyond the normally brutish nature of their race. After the clans of Blade's Edge were freed from the domination of the Sons of Gruul, the adventurers responsible - now known as the rightful Kings of the ogres - were directed to give aid to Ogri'la. The ogres' intelligence is boosted by the presence of the Apexis Crystals, powerful artifacts named after an extinct clan of arakkoa. They are in battle against the forces of the Burning Legion, with their forge camps to the north and south, and the Black Dragonflight. The Sha'tari Skyguard aids the Ogri'la ogres in these battles. Kalachakra [1] thangka from Sera Monastery (private collection). ... Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the novel, Lost Horizon, written by British writer James Hilton in 1933. ...

Sylvanaar

Sylvanaar is an outpost erected by the night elves of Darnassus in the Living Grove, a forest west of Daggermaw Canyon. This is the primary Alliance outpost in the Blade's Edge.

Thunderlord Stronghold

Thunderlord Stronghold was the ancestral compound of the Thunderlord Clan, one of several clans left behind by Gul'dan and the Horde during the First and Second Wars. At some point during or after the Second War, the clan was annihilated by ogres. The Horde has retaken the Stronghold as their primary outpost in Blade's Edge, in honor of the destroyed clan.

Toshley's Station

Toshley's Station is a small gnomish outpost affiliated with the Alliance, located on a ridge above Daggermaw Canyon, where they conduct experiments with their ingenious technologies. A transport pad is located just outside the station. The defenders of the station, Razak's Roughriders, often do battle with the indigenous ravagers that constantly assault the station.

Its name is a reference to Star Wars, when Luke Skywalker says... "But i wanted to go into Toshey Station and pick up some power converters..." The ravager assaults and "Razak's Roughriders" are references to the film Starship Troopers.

Netherstorm

Netherstorm - formerly the Plains of Farahlon - is an archapelago of purpleish-soiled islands of dead rock floating in the midst of the Twisting Nether. The sky is rife with arcane storms from the Nether, which gives the region its name.

Area 52

Area 52 is an outpost populated by goblins of the Braintrust of Orbital Operations and Mechanics (B.O.O.M.), who are building a rocket ship to take them away from Outland and traverse the Twisting Nether. Its name is an obvious reference to Area 51, and most of the goblins wear Star Trek-like uniforms.

Cosmowrench

Cosmowrench is a small goblin outpost near Tempest Keep.

Eco-Domes of Netherstorm

The Consortium, an interstellar band of traders and smugglers, set up four artificial ecological enclosures, or eco-domes, in Netherstorm as part of their operations in Outland. The domes, as their name implies, contains a relatively intact ecosystem in contrast to the barren purple soil outside them. The eco-domes are identified as Farfield, Midrealm, Skyperch and Sutheron. Skyperch and Sutheron are linked, surround the Consortium's headquarters at the Stormspire.

Here you will find Shauly Pore, a goblin (and obvious reference to Pauly Shore and the film Bio-Dome).

Kirin'Var Village

Kirin'Var was a village established in the Plains of Farahlon by members of the Alliance Expedition affiliated with the Kirin Tor of Dalaran, colleagues of the archmage Khadgar. After Draenor's destruction, the village remained; however, the blood elves led by Kael'thas Sunstrider attacked Kirin'Var, detonating a horrific weapon known as a mana bomb that practically destroyed the village and killed almost everyone in it. Only Archmage Vargoth, leader of the village, survived, imprisoned in his Violet Tower by a curse placed upon it by Kael'thas.

Manaforges of Netherstorm

The manaforges are five powerful structures that harvest the energies of the arcane storms of Netherstorm. They appear to be of naaru manufacture. However, when the blood elves took over Tempest Keep, they also seized the manaforges, giving them a near limitless supply of magical energy to feed their growing addictions. Of the five, only four - Ara, B'naar, Coruu and Duro - still function, and are populated by blood elves; Ara, the most heavily defended, is also patrolled by demons of the Burning Legion as testament to Kael'thas' loyalties. The fifth, Ultris, was destroyed by the summoning of Dimensius the All-Devouring, the enslaver of the Ethereal homeworld of K'aresh, and the area around it is surrounded by Dimensius' minions.

The Stormspire

The Stormspire is the headquarters of the Consortium in Outland. Led by Nexus-Prince Haramad, the Consortium conducts their various operations of trading in exotic goods, mining Outland's unique ores, and outright smuggling. The Stormspire appears to be an ancient draenei structure and is surrounded by Eco-Domes Sutheron and Skyperch, and the vast ecosystem contained within them.

Tempest Keep

Tempest Keep is a naaru dimensional fortress that brought A'dal and the Sha'tar to Outland. After the naaru dispersed from the fortress, it was attacked and conquered by Kael'thas Sunstrider and his blood elves, and became their base of operations as they used the manaforges to harvest magical energy for them to feed on. Tempest Keep consisted of the central fortress and four satellite structures - the Botanica, the Mechanar, the Arcatraz and the Exodar. One month before the reopening of the Dark Portal, the draenei survivors led by the Prophet Velen raided the Exodar and broke away from Tempest Keep, appearing in the skies above northern Kalimdor. The other three are now more-heavily fortified as a result.

The Mechanar

Easy to spot with its light purple crystals, the Mechanar is the headquarters of one of Kael'thas' chief lieutenants, Pathaleon the Calculator. The Mechanar has two levels. In order to activate the elevator to the second level, the two Gatewatchers - Gyro-Kill and Iron-Hand - must be destroyed.

The Botanica

The Botanica, as its name implies, appears to be a large floating arboretum, located to the left of the main palace (when facing east, looking at the front of the Keep). Its structure is made of light blue crystals. The tenders of the Botanica are nature elementals (lashers, ancients, etc.), satyrs and - surprisingly - blood elf druids. The Warp Splinter is an "Ancient of Arcane", similar to the night elf Ancient of War but with large arcane crystals protruding from their forms.

The Arcatraz

The Arcatraz is a prison colony of sorts, used by the naaru to hold demons, servants of the Old Gods, and other corruptions. It holds position near the top of the central fortress spire, and is recognizable by its deep red crystals.

When Kael'thas took control of Tempest Keep, he used it for much the same reason - but unlike the naaru, blood elves are susceptible to suggestion. The blood elf warden, Mellichar, has been corrupted by a powerful Qiraji named Harbinger Skyriss, and is opening all of the prison cells, freeing the trapped demons and void creatures. They now run rampant through the structure.

The Arcatraz's name and function is a reference to Alcatraz Island, the former federal prison off the coast of San Francisco.

The Eye

The Eye is the central fortress of Tempest Keep and the inner sanctum of Kael'thas Sunstrider himself. The entire fortress is populated by blood elves, phoenix-hawks, mechanical sentries, and Burning Legion technicians.

The Eye has four major rooms: The Phoenix Hall (where Kael'thas' phoenix, Al'ar, resides), the Mechanical Wing (location of the Void Reaver), the Astromancer's Hall (where High Astromancer Solarian can be found), and Kael'thas' inner sanctum. Kael'thas is joined by his four advisors - the warrior Thaladred the Darkener, the hunter Master Engineer Telonicus, the mage Grand Astromancer Capernian, and the paladin Lord Sanguinar.

Shadowmoon Valley

Formerly the grounds of the Shadowmoon Clan, this valley located east of Terokkar Forest has become greatly changed since the corruption of the Horde. Green-glowing fel lava flows everywhere here, and the skies are clouded and stormy with greenish balls of fire streaking across the sky.

Altar of Damnation

Nearly forty years ago, this altar was where the warlock Gul'dan spoke the words of the Cipher of Damnation and forever changed the land - and cut the orcs off from the ancestral spirits that had sustained them for generations. Gul'dan's spirit remains trapped here in that moment far in the past, with other spirits of the past trying to dissuade him from his actions.

Altar of Sha'tar

The Altar of Sha'tar is the primary base of the Aldor in Shadowmoon Valley, where they conduct operations against the Legion, the Illidari and other forces at work in the Valley.

Altar of Shadows

Located in the southern part of the valley, the Altar of Shadows is the current prison of the death knight Teron Gorefiend.

The Black Temple

The Black Temple is the fortress of the Lord of Outland, Illidan Stormrage. In ages past, the temple was known as the Temple of Karabor, and was the refuge of the draenei Prophet Velen. When the orcs were manipulated into making war on the draenei, they besieged the Temple of Karabor and killed everyone they could find. It then became known as the Black Temple, and was used as the headquarters of Gul'dan and his Shadow Council until the opening of the Dark Portal. It was here, in the courtyard pool of the Temple, that the blood of Mannoroth was spilt, to be later consumed by the clans of the Horde. After Gul'dan and the selected clans traversed beyond the Dark Portal, the Temple became known as Fortress Shadowmoon, and was controlled by Ner'zhul and the Shadowmoon Clan until the events that led to the creation of Outland. During that period, the Pit Lord Magtheridon took the Temple as his own, where it served as the headquarters of the Legion's efforts in Outland.

Then came Illidan...

During a climactic battle, Illidan deposed Magtheridon and had him taken to the Hellfire Citadel. The Betrayer then set himself up as Lord of Outland, making the Temple his home. He manned it with legions of his loyal fel orc, blood elf, naga and demon legions. Only those who can obtain the Medallion of Karabor, a necklace once worn by the Temple's draenei clerics, could enter the Black Temple and do battle with Illidan himself.

There are two outer battlements of the Black Temple, manned by Illidan's loyalists. The northern battlement, the Ata'mal Terrace, is inhabited by fel orcs of the Shadowmoon Clan who hold the Heart of Fury, a shard of the ata'mal crystal that would be placed in an empty slot in the Medallion of Karabor. The southern battlement, the Ruins of Karabor, is manned by blood elves who echo their master and train to become demon hunters to do battle with the Legion and the invaders from the Alliance and Horde. The pathway to the front gates between them is crawling with Illidan's demonic soldiers, and a Legion fel reaver called the Doomwalker occasionally patrols this road as well.

Coilskar Cistern/Coilskar Point

Coilskar Cistern is the only known source of fresh water in Shadowmoon Valley. Because of this, it is naturally controlled by Illidan's naga, who have set up their base at Coilskar Point. A fragment of the Cipher of Damnation, used to turn Shadowmoon Valley into its current state, is held by the naga here - and one of them has the key to open it.

Crimson Watch

Crimson Watch is a base of operations for the Crimson Sigil, the elite of Illidan's blood elf legions. The High General of the Sha'tar, Marcus Auralion, is held in a crystal prison here by the Illidari. Adventurers of the Alliance and the Horde who obtain the journal of Val'zareq the Conqueror, one of the senior members of the Sigil, can come here to do battle with the Sigil and destroy it...and in doing so, incur the ire of Illidan himself.

The Deathforge

The Deathforge is a Burning Legion production center used to create the infernals that besiege Wildhammer Stronghold and Shadowmoon Village.

Dragonmaw Fortress

Dragonmaw Fortress is the headquarters of the Dragonmaw Clan, led by Zuluhed the Whacked. The Dragonmaw, in the service of Illidan, have been capturing the nether drakes native to this area, and using them to supply Illidan's legions with dragonriders.

Eclipse Point

This ruined draenei outpost is the main outpost of Illidan's blood elves in the Valley. Here, the sky is blood-red as opposed to the black-and-green of the rest of the Valley. Another of the fragments of the Cipher of Damnation is held here, this time by the blood elves.

The Hand of Gul'dan

The Hand of Gul'dan is a huge fel volcano west of the Black Temple. The mountain was named after Gul'dan, who is said to have raised it himself by speaking the words of the Cipher of Damnation. The mountain spits greenish fire from its summit, and it is surrounded by pools of fel lava.

Illidari Point

Another corrupted draenei ruin, Illidari Point is populated by Illidan's demons, and used as a staging ground.

Legion Hold

Legion Hold is the primary headquarters of the Burning Legion in Outland, where they conduct their war against Illidan, the naaru, and the Alliance and Horde. Led by Deathbringer Jovaan, a man'ari eredar, the forces of Legion Hold include Doomguards, Shivarra, mo'arg engineers, and even a few fel orcs. It also serves as a massive factory for the production of fel reavers and infernals for use both in Outland and elsewhere.

Netherwing Fields

The Netherwing Fields is primarily where the nether drakes of the Netherwing Dragonflight congregate. Their patriarch, Neltharaku, keeps watch over his children, and his son Mordenaku - in the guise of the elf Mordenai - tries to convince adventurers to aid his flight.

Netherwing Ledge

Located on an "island" floating off the southern portion of the Valley, Netherwing Ledge is where the Dragonmaw dragonriders, known as Skybreakers, operate from. Agents of the Netherwing, after they master flight, must infiltrate the Dragonmaw and somehow both undermine it from within and achieve greater glory, eventually becoming its greatest champion. Only then will the Netherwing permit one of their children to serve as a mount for the adventurer.

Sanctum of the Stars

The Sanctum of the Stars is the primary base of the Scryers in Shadowmoon Valley, where they conduct operations against the Legion, the Illidari and other forces at work in the Valley.

Shadowmoon Village

Shadowmoon Village is the primary outpost of the Horde in Shadowmoon Valley and also where the wyvern breeders sell mounts, and the training to fly them, to soldiers of the Horde. Shadowmoon Village is manned entirely by the Kor'kron, members of Thrall's elite guard.

The Warden's Cage

The Warden's Cage appears to be a ruined orcish structure located across the road from the entrance to the Black Temple. Deep inside, Akama and his Ashtongue Deathsworn serve as the jailors of the Warden Maiev Shadowsong, who was responsible for Illidan's imprisonment and now seeks vengeance for the lives the Betrayer has carelessly destroyed since his release. Akama and Maiev will have a greater part to play in the fight against Illidan, inside the Temple itself.

Wildhammer Stronghold

Wildhammer Stronghold is the primary outpost of the Alliance in Shadowmoon Valley and is also where the gryphon breeders sell mounts, and the training to fly them, to soldiers of the Alliance. Wildhammer Stronghold is manned by survivors of the Gryphon Rider Division of the Alliance Expedition, commanded by Kurdran Wildhammer, who serves as Thane of the Stronghold.

Miscellaneous

Locations in the Warcraft Universe that do not exist on either Azeroth or Outland.

Argus

Argus was the original homeworld of the Eredar (and hence the Draenei, who are physically identical to the original eredar). It was apparently a utopian world whose inhabitants were both vastly intelligent and highly gifted in magic. Argus was ruled by a triumvirate of the greatest and most powerful eredar mages: Kil'jaeden, Archimonde, and Velen. It is possible that they ruled from Mac'Aree, the most sacred of the cities on Argus, according to Jessera of Mac'Aree. Eventually, Argus attracted the attention of Sargeras. The Destroyer offered the Eredar a deal: in exchange for their loyalty, he would give them power undreamed of by all races. Kil'jaeden and Archimonde were quick to accept the offer, but Velen had a vision of the future: the eredar would be transformed into demons, under the rule of Sargeras. His advice to Kil'jaeden and Archimonde went unheeded, and he desperately sought a solution to this dilemma. Eventually, Velen was contacted by the Naaru, and he fled with his followers, renaming his people the Draenei, or Exiled Ones.

Kil'jaeden, Archimonde, and the rest of their race became the feared, insidious sorcerers and tacticians of the Legion.

It is unclear whether the world of Argus was destroyed by the Eredar's sudden demonic powers (as implied by previous lore), or if it survived their transformation. If Argus still exists, it is certainly a stronghold of the Burning Legion, possibly their headquarters. Rise of the Horde leans towards this interpretation, though nothing is explicitly stated.

The Dark Below

The Dark Below (which may be another name for the Twisting Nether) is a hellish underworld in the legends of Azeroth. Certain species of demons, devils, and other infernal creatures that take an active interest the workings of Azeroth are said to have originated from there.

Worshippers: Sorcerers often claim that their power comes directly from such dark sources and occasionally have a patron beast of the Dark Below to foster their magic. The creatures from the Dark Below rarely walk the land alone, but they have many worshippers on Azeroth to do their work for them. These priests are often indistinguishable from the Lich King's necromancers, though the two factions hate one another with a vengeance born of jealousy and professional rivalry.

Inhabitants: The demons from the Dark Below are said to take on many faces, depending on which race is telling the story. Usually, they resemble the individual with whom they are speaking, idealized into a hideous, wretched form--a creature of pain and horror, capable of viciousness beyond mortal men. They do not "live" within the lands of Azeroth per se, but instead exist on some higher plane, called into being only when necessity demands it.

By their description the Demons of the Dark Below are likely enemies of the Celestials.

Relationship to the Twisting Nether: The demons from the Dark Below apparently exist apart from the Burning Legion, which resides in the Twisting Nether, and the two forces are at odds. Dark Below may be another description for the "Twisting Nether", in which case these are demons of a separate faction that live within the same plane of existence.

The Elemental Plane

The Pantheon shattered the Old Gods' citadels and chained the five evil gods far beneath the surface of the world. Without the Old Gods' power to keep their raging spirits bound to the physical world, the elementals were banished to an abyssal plane, where they would contend with one another for all eternity. This plane is called the Elemental Plane.

The elementals have grown attached to their adopted home in the millennia that passed since. They can be called back to Azeroth for short periods of time, but most are eager to return to their world when the spell that summoned them ends.

Communicating with elementals is difficult, and they have provided little information about the nature of their realm. Scholars believe that Elemental Plane takes the form of a single world suspended in nothingness, and that each kind of elemental has claimed a portion of the world. Apparently, the surface or the realm is divided almost equally between deep ocean and a gigantic continent dotted with active volcanoes. If the lava flows, earthquakes, windstorms, and tsunami are as common as the scholars predict, then the Elemental Plane is a very dangerous place to visit.

The Elemental Plane is a three-tiered realm, with layers much like an onion, surrounding the sun in the core of the planet. It would look like an ordinary spherical planet to an outsider, with realm of air (Skywall) floating above the oceans(Abyssal Maw) and single continent(Deephome), with Firelands as the deepest and outer ring. From the inside out, the top layer is the domain of Air, the middle layer the domains of Water and Earth, and the lowest layer is the domain of Fire.

The domain of Air is called The Skywall, the domain of Earth is called Deephome, the domain of Fire is called The Firelands, and the domain of Water is called The Abyssal Maw.

Knowledge about the Elemental Plane is entirely from Warcraft lore and books, and it does not appear and there is very little reference to it in World of Warcraft. The Emerald Dream

When the Titans came to the planet Azeroth and freed it from the grasp of the Old Gods, they decided to reshape it to make it more habitable for the mortal races that would soon develop upon it. But before they did this they created the Emerald Dream which served as the blueprint for what they were going to accomplish. But since the Titans invested a lot of time working on perfecting the design of Azeroth, the Dream itself is made of up layer upon layer of these earlier unfinished, or flawed incarnations.

The Dream itself is covered with deep forests, free from any sentient races interference. The Green Dragon Aspect, Ysera, was placed in charge of watching over the Dream and Azeroth after the Titans finished with their shaping. Four portals into this plane exist in Azeroth. They are located in Duskwood (Twilight Grove), Feralas (Dream Bough), The Hinterlands (Seradane) and Ashenvale (Bough Shadow). A fifth portal into the Dream is located in Crystalsong Forest in Northrend. The Green dragonflight guards these portals jealously in order to prevent any mortal from entering the Dream. However, The Dream has become somewhat tainted and is now referred to by several NPCs as the "Emerald Nightmare." It is rumored that players will be able to enter the dream in a future expansion of World of Warcraft in a similar manner to the ability to enter Draenor. The Great Dark

The Great Dark, or Great Dark Beyond, is the empty void between worlds (in other words, it is the Warcraft equivalent of outer space). It is described as the first of everything when there was nothing, and is part of the primary material dimension, as opposed to the Twisting Nether, which is considered part of the Great Dark. Layers of Atmosphere - not to scale (NOAA)[1] Outer space, sometimes simply called space, refers to the relatively empty regions of the universe outside the atmospheres of celestial bodies. ...

To date, five planets have been specified in the Warcraft universe: Argus, Azeroth, K'aresh, Outland (formerly called Draenor) and Xoroth. However, countless other planets exist in the Great Dark Beyond.

The Titans probably travel through the Great Dark, as opposed to the Twisting Nether (which might explain their shock at the emergence of the Demons).

K'aresh

The original homeworld of the ethereals before they evacuated to wander the Twisting Nether. This planet was conquered by the void lord Dimensius and his void armies. The current state of K'aresh is unknown. According to a curse spoken by a Protectorate Demolitionist, K'aresh's solar system has at least two suns.

One of the common theories of The Twisting Nether is that it acts the way Immaterium does in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It acts as a parallel dimension to our own space. By travelling through it people can traverse the distance between stars in a short time. This realm however is the home to malevolent spirits such as demons who seek to destroy our reality. The Twisting Nether is thought to be the link between all of the dimensions in the multiverse. It is utilized by the Titans to create the many worlds under their watch, and later as well by Sargeras in the creation of the Burning Legion. It is also considered a type of 'hell' by members of the Scarlet Crusade where those who are tainted by the Scourge go when they die. Xoroth

Xoroth is one of the fiery, chaotic worlds belonging to the Burning Legion, or more specifically, the Nathrezim (Dreadlords) (and, presumably, the Tothrezim). This is home to the infernal Dreadsteeds, mounts to the Dreadlords. They are owned by Lord Hel'nurath, the "stable keeper". Players will have to summon a Dreadsteed in a quest for a warlock's epic mount by opening a portal to this world in Dire Maul. Dreadsteeds roam the fiery Plains of Xoroth.
