Encyclopedia > Lochboisdale

Lochboisdale (Lochbaghasdail) is the main ferry terminal for the island of South Uist and is undergoing a revival of fortunes after a period of closures of the local shop (which closed in 1991 after trading for over 100 years) and the local hotel. The pier area has undergone a transformation as the old shop and surrounding buildings were either renovated or removed to provide new housing and commercial units for rent.

Lochboisdale Hotel, built in the late 19th century as a fishing hotel, is adjacent to the ferry terminal. After being closed for a while the hotel is now under new ownership and ready to welcome visitors.

There is a butcher's shop, a hardware store, a bank (with ATM facilities), a community centre (with public internet access), the post office and the Police Station within walking distance of the pier. A garage and filling station are also close to the pier. There is a Free Church of Scotland in the village.

There are free yacht moorings available in Lochboisdale (as well as in many other lochs and bays along the east coast of the islands). Comann Seolaidh Lochbaghasdail is the local sailing club.

Like many of the islands there is hardly any crime and visitors can relax in the gentle Hebridean way

The clouds had almost cleared for a while, and for a moment I was tempted to sleep out again, but the forecast was not good and this time the first B&B that I came to had a bed.
Lochboisdale was a tiny village, but I spent a pleasant hour looking round a photographic exhibition, portraits of different generations of islanders.
It was building on the work of a photographer who had been in the islands in the 1950s, and seeing the change in faces over a 40 year period as well as the in many cases striking family resemblences was quite diverting.
