Encyclopedia > Lochranza

Lochranza is a village located on the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland.


It is the most northernly sited of Arran's villages and is located in the north-western corner of the island. Lochranza is the site of the Arran Distillery, built in 1995 and producing the Arran Single Malt. The distillery is one of the major industries of the island.

Yet, traditionally, Lochranza has been much less visited than the resort villages of Brodick, Lamlash, and Whiting Bay in the east and south east of the island.
The first is the popularity of the summer ferry route from Lochranza pier to Claonaig, on the Kintyre Peninsula south of Tarbert.
Visitors who find their way to Lochranza via the traditional "clockwise" tour of the island, or via the ferry from Kintyre, will be amazed by the sight that greets them as the road crests the end of the glen south of Lochranza on the road to Brodick.

Lochranza Castle can be visited free of charge (the key is available from the Lochranza Stores).
Lochranza is also the site of Scotland's newest distillery, Isle of Arran Distillers, which opened in 1995 and is the first legal whisky distillery on the island for over 150 years.
Lochranza has a decent selection of places to stay, best of which is Apple Lodge, Tel/Fax.
