Lodhi (also sometimes Lodi) is a Pashtun tribe, most likely a sub-group of the larger Ghilzai of Afghanistan and Pakistan who were part of a wave of Pashtuns who pushed east into what is today Pakistan and India. Often accompanying the Turkic who conquered South Asia, the Lodhi established themselves during the Islamic period in South Asia as a Muslim ruling class and were valued warriors. Lodhi is also a Hindu community in India. The name Lodhi stands for followers of Lodheshwar which means Lord Shiva. He is one of the three main Hindu gods. Tribal Lodhis were Cultivators. They are now prominently found in the Northern part of India. Lodhi community is diversified in many parts of India. A part of community is very much prominant in the central India, especially in Vidarbha and its area near Madhya Pradesh. The community speaks its own language called Lodhi which has different versions for different regions. It has further sub-classes in it like Maha Lohi, Rajput Lodhi, Dhor Lodhi, etc. The community has diversified to a great extent, which has led it to form highly differentiated groups. There are many groups with varied social and financial standings. Until year 2004, this cast belonged to Open Category of cast classification in India.
