For other meanings of Ve, see Ve (disambiguation).
In Norse mythology, Ve was one of the Aesir and a son of Bestla and Bor. His brothers were Vili and Odin. He was known for having given humanity the powers of speech and their external senses. According to Loki, in Lokasenna, he had an affair with Odin's wife, Frigg. Together with Vili, he constructed Yggdrasil, the world-ash.
In Voluspa, at the creation of the first man (Ask) and woman (Embla), Höner and Lodur help Odin. In Gylfaginning, Vili and Ve are mentioned instead. As Snorri knew Voluspa, it is thus very likely that Lodur was another name for Ve.
With Lodur, Night had two beautiful children, Moon and Sun (Mani and Sol), and the council resolved that they should travel across the heaven in chariots made of fire and gold, crafted in the underworld-smithies, in order to illuminate the world.
Lodur oversees the regular motion of the mill, and beneath him stand the nine giantesses who push the mill-handle before them.
Lodur, the ruler of the blazing fire and master of the fire-augur, kindles them in the mother's womb and there gives them what he first gave Ask and Embla: the ability to move, warm blood, and the form of the gods.
Lodur, whenever mentioned in the myths is always a positive and benevolent being.
Lodur is a fire God in one aspect and one level his very name being linked to the German `Lodern` which means `to blaze` as was noted by Jacob Grimm among others.
Lodur and Loki are in fact opponents, not one and the same.
