In Hinduism and Buddhism, the lokapala (Skt. "world protector") were the Guardians of the four directions and were usually placed in pairs at the entrance to tombs. As Guardians they could call upon the spirits of the next world to help them protect the tomb if necessary.
collections of the Lokapala are comprised of Chinese works of art: jades, porcelains, sculptures, and bronzes.
These collections have been placed on the ‘web’ in order to share them with others in the hope of providing enjoyment, to invite comment and interaction, and to facilitate a greater understanding of the culture and works of art created by the people of China.
The pleasure of collecting comes from the thrill of the hunt, the acquisition of rarities, and the never ending enrichment of knowledge that study and research can provide.
Condition: Color fading, abrasions, small chips and/or minor deterioration with possible areas of expert restoration is not unusual in burial pieces of this age.
The lokapala is a white color decorated with red, green, and fl pigment.
Lokapalas were though to ward off evil from the tomb.
