Lolei temple at Angkor, Cambodia

Lolei is the northernmost temple of the Roluos group at Angkor, Cambodia. It was built in the late 9th century under Yasovarman I, being dedicated in 893. It was an island temple, located slightly north of the centre of the Indratataka baray, construction of which was almost completed under the previous king, Indravarman I. The baray is now dry. Roluos: Lolei (621 words)
The temple of Lolei is situated on the northern continuation of the track to Bakong, at 500 metres north of route 6.
Its access track is taken therefore towards the north-west, on the left of the road from Siem Reap, just beyond the 13 kilometre marker stone and 400 metres after the track to Bakong.
The motifs of the corner piers are the same - with dvarapalas on the east row and devatas on the west, sheltered within "palatial" arcature and sculpted in a block of sandstone that is set into the brickwork.
APSARA - Lolei (348 words)
Lolei is composed of four tower sanctuaries, the remains of the original ensemble that was without doubt more complex.
The name Lolei is really a phonetic corruption, commonly used in Siem Reap Province, of Harihara + alay, the name of the first 9th century Angkorian capital centered around present day Roluos.
The choice to establish Lolei at the center of the Indratataka at this time was of specific symbolic meaning and significance since it put the dedicated object (Lolei dedicated to Indravarman) at the heart of the work of the one to whom it was dedicated (the Indratataka built by Indravarman).
