History

The team was founded as an Ontario Hockey Association junior A team in 1965 as the London Nationals (they were sponsored by the Canadian National Recreation Association, an organization of Canadian National Railways employees). The team was affiliated with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League until 1968. From 1966 to 1968 they were coached by former Leafs coach Turk Broda. In 1968 they were sold, the name was changed to the London Knights and the team colours were changed to green and gold. Currently, the owners are former NHL players Dale Hunter and Mark Hunter. Dale is also the head coach while Mark is the General Manager. They have appeared in the OHL championship three times, losing to the Ottawa 67's in 1977 and the Belleville Bulls in 1999. In 2005 the Knights finally won their first OHL Championship by defeating the 67's. The 19951996 season is known as the Knightmare, they had the CHL's worst-ever record with 3 wins, 60 losses, and 3 ties. The same year, the London Knights and the John Labatt Centre were awarded the 2005 Memorial Cup Tournament, which was played from May 21 to May 29. 2005 Playoffs

The London Knights began the 2005 OHL playoffs with a nine-game winning streak, winning two best-of-seven rounds against the Guelph Storm and the Windsor Spitfires in four games each, plus their first game against the Kitchener Rangers. The London Knights won the Western Conference Final against the Kitchener Rangers 4-1 and were awarded the Wayne Gretzky Trophy.
