LONGTHORPE (494 words)
A Roman camp of a size sufficient to house half a legion lies on the south bank of the River Nene at Longthorpe near Peterborough, in Cambridgeshire.
That the fortress was not in existence at the beginning of the revolt is possibly substantiated by the fact that the revolt was suppressed by the use of auxiliary forces only, implying perhaps that there were no legionary forces nearby.
Excavations carried out on the Longthorpe site by Sheppard Frere revealed that the defences of the fortress had been reduced in size to that of a large auxiliary fort, and that the work was carried out in a hurried fashion at around this period in history.
BBC News | UK | Farmer's anger after car chase (760 words)
Richard Longthorpe, 48, used his mobile phone to give police a running commentary as he chased the would-be thief for 37 miles from East Yorkshire into North and West Yorkshire.
In a letter to the Yorkshire Post, Mr Longthorpe said: "Their (the police's) main concerns seemed to be more just whose responsibility it was to give chase - Humberside, West Yorkshire or North Yorkshire Police force - and whether or not I was talking to them on a hands-free mobile.
Humberside and West Yorkshire Police have apologised to Mr Longthorpe and have said investigations into why police failed to go to his assistance were continuing.
