Lonoke is a city located in Lonoke County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,287. The city is the county seat of Lonoke County6, and holds the distinction of being the only Arkansas city to share its name with the county in which it is located.


Geography

Lonoke is located at 34°47'3" North, 91°54'3" West (34.784065, -91.900705)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.9 km˛ (4.6 mi˛). 11.2 km˛ (4.3 mi˛) of it is land and 0.7 km˛ (0.3 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 6.07% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,287 people, 1,595 households, and 1,092 families residing in the city. The population density is 382.3/km˛ (990.0/mi˛). There are 1,703 housing units at an average density of 151.9/km˛ (393.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 73.29% White, 23.40% Black or African American, 0.77% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,595 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 28.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.14.


In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.4 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $31,558, and the median income for a family is $44,423. Males have a median income of $34,315 versus $22,642 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,598. 15.0% of the population and 11.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.6% of those under the age of 18 and 19.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Established next to the town of Lonoke in 1917, during World War I, Eberts Field ranked second among aviation training fields maintained by the U.S. government, and it was one of the leading training centers for aviators during the war.
