The position of Lord Rector of St Andrews University is elected every three years by the students at the University of St Andrews. Seldomly referred to as Lord Rector, they are more commonly known just as the Rector, the position's place in the university was esnhrined by statute of the Westminster Parliament when they passed the Universities (Scotland) Act 1889 which provided for the election of a Rector at all of the universities in existence at the time in Scotland. To this day it is only the four ancient universities of St Andrews; Glasgow; Edinburgh; Aberdeen; as well asDundee who elect a rector, whereas the modern universities do not. The Rector chairs meetings of the University Court, the governing body of the university and is elected at regular intervals by the matriculated students of each university.
The chief executive of the university is the Principal (or Vice-Chancellor).
Rectors have often been elected from the world of celebrity (Peter Ustinov at Dundee, and John Cleese and Frank Muir at St. Andrews, for example), but nonetheless their position is of some importance to the running of each university.
