Lotus is a five-piece instrumental band from Philadelphia. Their music is highly tempered by electronic styles such as deep house and drum 'n bass, but inside the sonic layers seep heavy doses of jazz, funk, and world music. Their high energy live shows feature tightly composed material balanced with stretched out improvisation. The sounds shift from spiritual and meditative to jubilant and energetic from dark dance floor burners to spaced-out waves of ambiance.
Lotus: A lot of the design comes from a buddy of ours that went to school with us and now lives in Philadelphia as well, Carl Bender.
Lotus: A lot of times, we take a decent amount of inspiration, or at least we used to...
Lotus: Oh man..., on a tour about a year and a half ago or so, we were up in Northern California and we randomly met this guy named Sage who was (Laughs) really out there.
Enter Lotus, a band that seems to be custom-made for that particular show, if not that particular hour.
What Lotus aspires to be, what messages it might have, what themes or emotions can be found in the songs…these questions go largely (though not completely) unanswered as the songs drift and dip and float from genre to genre.
Lotus succeeds when it focuses on a particular musical path or element, be it electronic, jazz or funk.
