Lou Barlow was born in Dayton, Ohio, but was raised in Jackson, Michigan and Westfield, Massachusetts. He began his career playing in the Massachusetts hardcore punk band Deep Wound with J Mascis. After becoming disillusioned with the constraints of hardcore, the two formed Dinosaur Jr in the mid-1980s. After 1989 Barlow concentrated on his side-project Sebadoh and later formed the Folk Implosion with John Davis. Through his work with these bands, he reached iconic status in the indie-rock community, and even enjoyed a top-40 hit, "Natural One," with the Folk Implosion. Considered by many to be one of the most prolific songwriters in indie music, he has released a number of lo-fi, home recorded solo albums under the names Lou Barlow, Lou Barlow & Friends or Sentridoh. Although born in Dayton, Ohio on July 17, 1966, Barlow was raised primarily in Amherst, Massachusetts, where during high school he joined forces with fellow introverted outsider J Mascis in the hardcore band Deep Wound.
After Sebadoh's acclaimed 1996 LP Harmacy, Barlow recorded the Folk Implosion's Dare to Be Surprised for release in the spring of 1997.
Barlow composed much of the material himself and hand-picked the rest of the music that was to appear in the film, giving exposure to many little known lo-fi bands and artists, including post rock pioneers, Slint.
