Lou Barlow was born in Dayton, Ohio, but was raised in Jackson, Michigan and Westfield, Massachusetts. He began his career playing in the Massachusetts hardcore punk band Deep Wound with J Mascis. After becoming disillusioned with the constraints of hardcore, the two formed Dinosaur Jr in the mid-1980s.
