Louann is a town located in Ouachita County, Arkansas. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 195.


Geography

Louann is located at 33°23'30" North, 92°47'34" West (33.391712, -92.792909)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛). 0.6 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 195 people, 71 households, and 57 families residing in the town. The population density is 313.7/km˛ (822.4/mi˛). There are 88 housing units at an average density of 141.6/km˛ (371.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 62.56% White, 36.41% Black or African American, 0.51% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 71 households out of which 36.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% are married couples living together, 25.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.7% are non-families. 19.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.05.


In the town the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.2 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $17,273, and the median income for a family is $18,333. Males have a median income of $21,250 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,288. 45.0% of the population and 44.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 66.2% of those under the age of 18 and 46.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The salt-bearing Louann Formation (Jurassic) in southern Arkansas extends in the subsurface from Miller and Hempstead Counties in the west to Chicot County in the east.
The Louann in south Arkansas represents the northernmost edge of salt-bearing units in the Gulf Coast Basin, the largest of 4 major basins containing salt in the United States.
