Desprez, who was born in Auxerre in Bourgogne, studied architecture and was awarded the Great Prize of the Académie d'architecture in 1770. He traveled frequently to Italy and was associated with Piranesi in Rome, when he came to the attention of Swedish King Gustavus III, who offered him a two-year contract as director of scenic decorations at the new Stockholm Opera founded by the King two years earlier. As architect, Desprez built in a monumental, neo-classical style influenced by his study of Greek and Roman ruins in the south of Italy and on Sicily. His greatest project was one never realized: the magnificent new palace planned by the King for Haga outside Stockholm. Because of lack of money, only the foundations were ever built and the project was abandoned after the assassination of the King. The smaller "royal pavillion" which stands at Haga was built by another architect, Olof Tempelman. His most significant completed project was the conservatory building in the new botanical garden in Uppsala, inaugurated after his death on May 13, 1807, the 100th anniversary of Linnaeus's birth. He also built the Villa Frescati (close to Haga outside Stockholm) in 1791-92 for Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt, after which the whole Frescati area later was named. Louis Jean Desprez - Wikipedia (214 words)
Louis Jean Desprez and his Sicilian Recollections (3128 words)
Desprez was 33 by then and had been married since 1770, much to the concern of the powerful "directeur général des bâtiments et jardins de Louis XVI", d'Angiviller, to whom Desprez was looking for provision for his wife while he was in Rome.
Desprez may also have felt prompted by the entire set of ideas behind the plans of Gustavus III for a play of chivalry to be performed at the Drottningholm Castle during the summer of 1782.
Desprez' two sheets are unique and exotic contributions to Swedish, not to say European art; they are an attempt at documenting, in an almost monumental form, rites and ceremonies that must have indelibly shocked the tourist, however natural they may have been in Sicily.
