The Louisiade Archipelago is a string of ten volcanic islands and coral reefs located just southeast of Papua New Guinea, between the Solomon Sea to the north and the Coral Sea to the south. Sideia and Basilaki islands lie closest to New Guinea, while Misima, Vanatinai (called Sudest or Tagula as named by European claimants on Western maps) , and Rossel islands lie further east. The archipelago has a land area of approximately 1600 km² (600 square miles), and Vanatinai (Sudest/Tagula) is the largest island. (800 km²). The islands on the southern margin of the Louisiade Archipelago are raised coral reefs, but the majority are mountainous, rarely, however, exceeding 3000 ft.; all of them are richly forested, but of little agricultural value.
The Louisiade and the d'Entrecasteaux Islands consist of the same slates and schists as form the main axis of the eastern peninsula, and they are auriferous.
European industries include gold mining, in which 500 miners, besides natives, are engaged (chiefly in the Louisiade Archipelago), and the beche de mer and pearl-shell fisheries, which were formerly more productive than at present.

The Louisiade Archipelago (1,600 km²) is located in the southwestern regions of the Milne Bay province, consisting of two large volcanic island-barrier reef complexes and numerous smaller island groups, islets, atolls and reefs.
The archipelago is sometimes extended westwards to include all those islands that lie off the southeastern tip of New Guinea — these can be considered as outliers of the archipelago.
At 202 km², the third major member of the Louisiade Archipelago is the 40 km by 10 km island of Misima, located off the northwestern end of Vanatinai's barrier reef.
