From the south, LA 20 begins at an exit from U.S. Highway 90 in northwest Terrebonne Parish and heads northeastward, where it intersects LA 24 in Schriever and turns due north. LA 20 intersects LA 1 in Thibodaux as it continues northward. LA 20 then passes through Chackbay before it enters St. James Parish.
