Story

Wilson Joel's (Hoffman) wife Liza has for an unexplained reason committed suicide. Wilson one night discovers a sealed letter from his wife, which he believes to be her suicide note. In his grief stricken state and with the added stress of finding the letter, which he can not bring himself to open and read, he forms an addiction with inhaling gasoline fumes (“huffing”). Gasoline, as it is known in North America, or petrol (abbreviated from petroleum spirit), in many Commonwealth countries (sometimes also called motor spirit) is a petroleum-derived liquid mixture consisting primarily of hydrocarbons, used as fuel in internal combustion engines. ... In order to hide his addiction from a work colleague he informs her that the petrol smell in his house is from his hobby of flying remote controlled planes. To try and engage an ever distant Wilson she asks her brother-in-law Denny (Jack Kehler), an RC hobbyist to visit Wilson. With the knowledge of an impending visit by Denny, Wilson heads down to the local RC hobbyist shop to buy himself a plane. He also stocks up on some RC fuel to fill his plane and feed his addiction. Jack Kehler is an actor. ...


Out of this lie a very unusual friendship forms between Wilson and an energetic Denny.


His mother-in-law Kathy Bates tries her best to help Wilson, and deal with her own loss at the same time. She becomes increasingly anxious to know the contents of the letter. Kathy Bates (right) with Frances Conroy in Six Feet Under. ...


His addiction continues to spirals out of control as Wilson tries to pluck up courage to open the letter.

It was this interaction of sort of these struggling artists doing their best to make the best movie that they could in the four weeks we had to shoot, so that was sort of what it was like at the get go.
I read my brother's script and loved it, I got Todd [Louiso] on board, we struggled creatively and, in the end, basically made the film that we wanted to make which is basically an impossible thing if you think about it.

Directed by Todd Louiso (he played Jack Black's record-store crony in "High Fidelity"), "Love Liza" was written by Gordy Hoffman, who happens to be the brother of the film's star.
