The novels were made into a drama TV series shown on British television from 1986 to 1994. The lechery and violence in the novels was largely removed for television but the interesting historical and cultural detail of the antiques trade remained. The first series was shown on BBC1 in 1986, and there was a five-year gap while the BBC and McShane's own production company Witzend wrangled over who should make a new series. Finally,Lovejoy was brought back as a regular fixture in 1991. Happily, nearly all of the original cast returned for the next three series with Malcolm Tierney reprising his role as Charlie Gimbert at the start of the 4th series. It was the comic interplay of the inner circle of Lovejoy, Tinker Dill, Eric Catchpole and Lady Jane Felsham that helped make show very popular. The television version maintained the author's original wish to keep Lovejoy's first name guarded, but a guest star reveals that his first name is "Malcolm" in latter years. Lovejoy neither confirms nor denies this. This article or section does not cite its references or sources. ... A television program is the content of television broadcasting. ... The 5th series of Lovejoy included some cast changes as Phyllis Logan (Lady Jane) left the show in the 2nd episode and Chris Jury {Eric) left the show in the 6th episode, both only returning for the series finale. Also in the 5th series two new regular cast members were added. These were Beth Taylor (played by Diane Parish), Lovejoy's new apprentice, and Charlotte Cavendish (played by Caroline Langrishe) — she ran a local antique auction house. The 6th and last series was conceived to round the story off and features a strangely dark tone on occasion as Lovejoy's old way of life is gradually dismantled. So far there has been no reunion.
