Lubec is a town located in Washington County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,652. Lubec is the easternmost town in the United States (see Extreme Points.) However, if you include territories (Insular areas), Point Udall in the U.S. Virgin Islands extends farther east.


Geography

Lubec is located in southeastern Maine, on the Passamaquoddy Bay, south of Eastport. The West Quoddy Head is southeast.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 204.2 km˛ (78.9 mi˛). 86.1 km˛ (33.3 mi˛) of it is land and 118.1 km˛ (45.6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 57.82% water.


The "Roosevelt Campobello International Bridge" connects Lubec to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,652 people, 755 households, and 427 families residing in the town. The population density is 19.2/km˛ (49.7/mi˛). There are 1,072 housing units at an average density of 12.4/km˛ (32.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.94% White, 0.36% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 755 households out of which 20.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.9% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.4% are non-families. 37.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.14 and the average family size is 2.77.


In the town the population is spread out with 20.4% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.4 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $20,565, and the median income for a family is $26,098. Males have a median income of $25,170 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,081. 28.8% of the population and 20.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 46.3% of those under the age of 18 and 20.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
