Lucasville is a census-designated place located in Scioto County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,588.

Lucasville is located at 38°52'49" North, 82°59'40" West (38.880234, -82.994439)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.6 km˛ (2.5 mi˛). 6.5 km˛ (2.5 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.57% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,588 people, 589 households, and 448 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 243.3/km˛ (631.4/mi˛). There are 672 housing units at an average density of 103.0/km˛ (267.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.10% White, 0.13% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 2.14% from two or more races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 589 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% are married couples living together, 14.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.08.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.4 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $25,313, and the median income for a family is $37,443. Males have a median income of $30,125 versus $21,174 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $13,569. 8.5% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.4% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

One mention of the Lucasville prison riot - one of the longest and bloodiest in U.S. history - was often enough to persuade state lawmakers to pour millions of tax dollars into Ohio's correctional system.
Some even suggest that the risk of violence at one of Ohio's 33 state-run prisons is now as great as at any time since Easter Sunday 1993, the day hundreds of inmates in Cell Block L seized control in Lucasville.
For Peters, the retired Lucasville guard, the recent budget cuts are a reminder of the years before the riot, when prisons were never a priority.

In 1885, the Ohio State Legislature enacted laws which required all further executions in the state to be carried out at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio.
In February of 1995, death row was moved from the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, Ohio, to the newly constructed Mansfield Correctional Institution in Mansfield, Ohio.
Donna Roberts of Trumbull County was sentenced to death in June of 2003 and is incarcerated at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Ohio.
