Lucius Aemilius Paullus 216 BC was a Roman Republic Roman general. He was consul twice,in 219 BC 219 and 216 BC.


The first time he served as consul, he defeated Demetrius of Pharos in the Second Illyrian War. During the Second Punic War, he was made consul a second time, and was killed in the Roman defeat at the Battle of Cannae. He was the father of Lucius Aemilius Paullus Macedonicus, and his daughter Aemilia Tertia married the elder Scipio Africanus. Demetrius of Pharos (or Demetrius of Pharus) betrayed Corcyra to Rome, in 229 BC, during the First Illyrian War, after which he ruled a portion of the Illyrian Adriatic coast. ... The Second Illyrian War was a war between the Roman Empire and the Illyrians that lasted from 220 to 219 BC. Demetrius of Pharos was defeated in the First Illyrian War in 229 BC and his reign of terror and piracy in the Adriatic subsided for ten years. ...
