In 1980 he received an Ariel Award of the Mexican Academy of Film for his short film El secreto. Four years later, his film Motel was selected to represent Mexico in film festivals around the globe. It was understandable that the "Conversation With Luis Mandoki" seminar at the DGA centered around the director-actor relationship.
Luis Mandoki has directed many memorable performances, from Rachel Chagall in Gaby, to Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia in When a Man Loves a Woman, to Susan Sarandon in White Palace, to name but a few.
Mandoki is eager to do a film that would take him back to his native Mexico, to do a story "that goes back to my culture." When he first came to Hollywood, he felt alienated by the cultural differences, "like the humor, or the way audiences react emotionally.

The Mexican motion picture that brought Mandoki worldwide attention was Gaby--A True Story, the poignant study of a woman he learned about from a television program, a writer coping with cerebral palsy.
Now a resident of Santa Barbara, California, Mandoki was born and raised in Mexico City where he became a student of fine arts, an interest he pursued at the San Francisco Art Institute and the London College of Printing.
