Will she reach some accommodation with Lula's government? Or will her and her associates in Fortaleza continue their opposition, which will probably lead to them being expelled from the PT?
And although the PT gained an unexpected triumph in Fortaleza, the capital of the northeastern state of Ceará, it did so with a dissident candidate, LuizianneLins.
In the first round of voting she was rejected by the party leadership, who backed Inacio Arruda of the Communist Party, which supports the PT.
Lins' triumph in a city with a population of over two million as well as the defeats of some of the PT's candidates strengthen currents within the party that criticise the conservative economic policy followed by President Lula.
Luizianne was one of the rare PT candidates to receive the active support of militants who had left the party after the expulsion of Senator Heloisa Helena and the MPs Baba, Joao Fontes and Luciana Genro, to found the party of Socialism and Freedom (PSoL).
In the second round she won with 56.2 per cent of the votes against Moroni Torgan, the candidate of the Party of the Liberal Front, and was described by the press as “the new star of the Brazilian Left”.
