Luna 1960B (E-3 series) was the third Soviet attempt to photograph the far side of the Moon. The first being the highly successful Luna 3 mission and the second being the unsuccessful Luna 1960A. It was launched on April 16, 1960. Luna 1960B was designed to duplicate the Luna 3 mission, but with higher resolution cameras and a closer approach to the Moon. The Luna programme (occasionally called Lunik) was a series of unmanned space missions sent to the Moon by the Soviet Union between 1959 and 1976.
Luna 1 missed its intended impact with the Moon and became the first spacecraft to fall into orbit around the Sun.
Luna 3 rounded the Moon later that year, and returned the first photographs of its far side, which can never be seen from Earth.

Luna 2 was the second of the Soviet Union's Luna program spacecraft launched in the direction of the Moon.
Luna 2 was similar in design to Luna 1, a spherical spacecraft with protruding antennae and instrument parts.
