Lutcher is a town located in St. James Parish, Louisiana, on the East Bank of the Mississippi River. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,735.

Lutcher is located at 30°2'56" North, 90°41'59" West (30.048867, -90.699744)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.8 km˛ (3.4 mi˛). 8.7 km˛ (3.4 mi˛) of it is land and 0.1 km˛ (0.04 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,735 people, 1,252 households, and 986 families residing in the town. The population density is 427.9/km˛ (1,107.3/mi˛). There are 1,368 housing units at an average density of 156.7/km˛ (405.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 49.91% White, 49.77% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.03% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.19% from two or more races. 0.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,252 households out of which 36.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 19.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% are non-families. 18.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.33.


In the town the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.1 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $34,167, and the median income for a family is $42,317. Males have a median income of $40,769 versus $22,257 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,129. 23.1% of the population and 21.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.2% of those under the age of 18 and 18.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


History

Lutcher was established as a sawmill town. It is the birthplace of early jazz clarinet great Leon Roppolo.

The Town of Lutcher was named after H. Lutcher, a lumber baron from Orange, Texas who came to the town in the early 20th century and cleared the Cypress swamp along the Blind River of trees and then went back to Texas.
Lutcher was a booming lumber town back then.
Today it is the home of the St. James Historical Society museum and a lot of old building made of cypress.
