Lygon Street, of the suburb of Carlton, Melbourne, Australia, is the Italian food precinct of the city. It is heavily European in nature and is the home of the yearly Lygon Street Festa, one of Australia's largest outdoor street festivals.
Geography
Lygon Street runs north-south through the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne. At its southernmost end, it connects to Russell Street in the Hoddle Grid; it then proceeds northward, through Carlton, Carlton North, and Brunswick East. North of Brunswick Road, the street numbers restart at 1.
Tram routes 1, 22 and 25 run along Lygon Street north of Elgin Street.
Landmarks
The Italian restaurant precinct synonymous with Lygon Street occupies the few blocks south of Elgin Street. Trades Hall occupies the corner of Lygon Street and Victoria Street. Melbourne General Cemetery is situated on the western side of Lygon Street in Carlton.
Many of the LygonStreet facades are heritage listed and date back over 100 years, its a great place to explore then sit back and enjoy the wining, dining, caffe lattes and Italian delicacies.
LygonStreet is close to the Melbourne Zoo, Optus Oval, RMIT and Melbourne Museum and Imax complex and the major Children's and Women hospitals.
Lygonstreet is easily accessible by tram from the city and is only about a 25 minute walk from the Melbourne City centre.
LygonStreet is part of a northern suburb in Melbourne that is Carlton, affectionately called 'Little Italy', where seemingly endless cafes and restaurants serving the flavours of Italy and the charming smiles of waiters entice you to taste the steaming bowls of pasta, strong espressos and delicious gelato.
During October, the streets of Carlton are alive with celebration of good food, rides and entertainment that is all part of the LygonStreet Fiesta.
