It's widely thought that this song was written by lyricist and guitarist Ryan Ross as a way of dealing with his break up with his girlfriend at the time, due to her cheating on him. The song's title originates from a line in the 1997 play "Closer", written by Patrick Marber. The line was originally spoken by the character Alice who, in the debut performance, was portrayed by English actress Liza Walker. It was also repeated in the 2004 film of the same name, spoken by the same elusive character Alice, this time portrayed by Natalie Portman. The prior Panic! at the Disco single "But It's Better If You Do" takes its name from the line after "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off" in both the play and the film. 1997 (MCMXCVII) was a common year starting on Wednesday of the Gregorian calendar. ... Like the song itself, the video seems to suggest adultery. In it, a woman picks up a stray fish, suggesting that she would accept any change from her present situation. Her husband dies, and she then faints, and dies. Realizing her mistake, the woman understands that there is no pleasure in being unfaithful. She knows that she would rather be with him than anyone else.

The video was premiered on MTV2 on July 14, 2006. It features people in fish tanks and Tim Burton-esque surrealism. The video only shows the band in one scene (the paramedics are the band members), because the band felt that their looks were distracting from their music. The water in the tanks seems to represent the person's will to live, or 'life force,' as the heroine dies when she tips her head and loses her water. The fish could also represent the people in their lives as the goldfish the woman picks up seems to represent the man she is cheating on her husband with.

It is also believed that the fish could represent the number of times one has had sex. When the woman finds the fish on the ground and adds it to her tank, it could represent that she had an affair. When her husband sees that she has an extra fish in her bowl, he kills himself. The video displays the progression of infidelity. At the wedding the husband has one fish in his tank, the girl has none. The snapshots of their lives accelerate and in every following frame, the number of goldfish increases.

The tanks are aquariums which are another allusion to the movie Closer released in 2004. After a correspondence with Dan over the internet on a cybersex site, Larry agrees to meet up with who he believes is Anna at the aquarium. Upon arriving at the aquarium, Anna, a friend of Dan is at the aquarium by coincidence. The two meet, Larry expecting sex in a hotel room after leaving the aquarium all the while. After making a fool of himself, Larry apologizes to Anna and they walk out of the aquarium, spurring a relationship on Anna's birthday. Look up closer in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ...

The single has received wide rotation on radio but the music video failed to chart on TRL. TRL may stand for: Trail Total Request Live, a television show on MTV. Tomb Raider: Legend, the latest game in the Tomb Raider franchise. ...

The band has reported on Steven's Untitled Rock Show that they chose this plot for the video because they felt it was very different from the other treatments they were being offered from other directors. Stevens Untitled Rock Show (SURS) is a program that airs on fuse in which host, Steven Smith, interviews famous alternative rock and pop-punk stars while airing alternative rock videos. ...
