'"Lynx Spiders"' are hunting spiders that spend their lives on plants, flowers and shrubs. Nimble runners and jumpers, they rely on their keen eyesight to stalk, chase or ambush prey. Six of their eight eyes are arranged in a hexagon-like pattern, a characteristic that identifies them as members of the family Oxyopidae. They also have spiny legs.

Common genera in the United States include Oxyopes—the common lynx spiders—and Peucetia—the green lynx spiders. Some members of the genus Oxyopes are abundant enough to be important in agricultural systems as biological control agents. This is especially true of the striped lynx spider Oxyopes salticus.

green lynx spider - Peucetia viridans (Hentz) (1482 words)
Judging from their local abundance, the lynx spiders are among the major predators of insects occurring in low shrubs and herbaceous vegetation.
Thus the possible use of lynx spiders in the control of crop pests will depend in a large part on when, where, on what crops, and for the control of what pests they are to be used.
The oxyopids or lynx spiders, in general, can be distinguished readily from other families of spiders by their peculiar hexagonal eye arrangements and the prominent spines on the legs.
Vietnamese spiders (2380 words)
There were several other attractive looking lynx spiders around, including one I photographed on the same flower as a red base Jezebel butterfly; luckily for the butterfly the spider was a bit too small to tackle such a large item of prey.
Unlike the jumping spiders and lynx spiders, this one was hunting at night on a tree trunk, and I suspect that its flat shape is an adaptation to allow it to hide under the tree's bark during the daytime.
Some spiders use their cerci to draw out and manipulate the silk which is extruded from the spinnerets on their belly (some silk is clearly visible coming out of the spinneret of the spider in the previous photo).
