Lyon is the crown prince of Grado who discovers the power to revive the dead. He discovers that in the Sacred Stone of Grado, half of which was entitled the Dark Stone, there existed the power to revive his dying father. But in doing so he releases the evil that is called the Demon King, a foul creature that was trapped in the Dark Stone. The Demon King possesses Lyon and starts a war to destroy the stones, which were used in ancient times to imprison him.

After a point in the game it is revealed that Lyon is not in charge of his actions, but instead is being controlled by the Demon King. After being possessed by the Demon King, Lyon begins his quest to destroy all the Sacred Stones, so that it would become impossible to stop the Demon King. To this end, Lyon mobilizes the Grado Empire and begins invading neighboring countries, using the command of the generals Duessel, Selena, Glen, Valter, Riev, and Caellach to do so. Prior to his possession, Lyon is portrayed in character specific flashbacks as a highly compassionate character, bearing immense magical talent but also unwilling to hurt living things.

During the game Lyon does not even realize that he is merely Demon King's clueless puppet. Lyon's childhood friends Prince Ephraim and Princess Eirika wish to save him from the clutches on the Demon King. His wish to save the lives of Grado's people led him to summon the fearsome power of the Demon King, believing he could control it. Prince Ephraim is a fictional character and Eirikas brother. ... Lyon would prefer not to be considered a person in high position. He feels he is too weak to rule over the large Grado empire. Throughout Ephraim's journey, he convinces himself that he is no enemy to Ephraim yet wishes to perform an ancient ceremony that he thinks would prevent a potential disaster from destroying a part of Grado, which he feels he cannot face the consequences of. His father, Vigarde, tells him before dying to protect the people of Grado from the calamities Lyon had foreseen, because it was feared that Renais would not offer them service and close their doors to Grado.

When Lyon is finally defeated in the story, he describes his ultimate position as a flesh sacrifice for the Demon King. If you take Eirika's path, Lyon, with his last dying breath, will finally confess his secret feelings for Princess Eirika. Eirika vows to avenge Lyon and defeat the Demon King once and for all. If you take Ephraim's path, Lyon admits deep respect and resentment towards Ephraim. Ephraim then, in turn, vows to defeat the Demon King for Lyon.

Lyon is the final character to be unlocked by playing through the game's "creature campaign". After completing the Lagdou Ruins three times, the crown prince of Grado joins the party as a Necromancer, a sorcerer who can summon Phantoms for his bidding and use all types of dark magic available in the game. It can be noted that stat-wise, Lyon's Phantoms are far superior to those that can summoned by any other summoner. Lyon is also one of the few characters that have a S rank in more than one field of Magic, making it possible for him to use the Sacred Twin Latona. He carries with him the dark tome Naglfar, the most powerful magic in the game, also being the only tome that has unlimited uses. It is also noteworthy the Naglfar is the only dark magic with a 95% hit precentage, further increasing its worth over the Sacred Twin Gleipnir. Lyon can be a worthwhile, if bittersweet, addition to the party.

A flashback at the end of the game describes how Eirika, Ephraim, and Lyon meet (after all the credits roll).
