Encyclopedia > Lyric FM

RTÉ Lyric FM, part of Radio Telefís Éireann, is an Irish radio station. It plays mainly classical music and jazz music. The station, which is based in Limerick, was launched in 1999 and is available via the Internet.

RTÉ Lyric FM grew out of an earlier station, RTÉ FM3 Classical Music, which broadcast from the early 1980s. FM3 broadcast classical music on the Radio na Gaeltachta network at breakfast time and in the evenings. The station was rarely marketed, except via promotions on RTÉ Radio 1, and few people knew of its existence.

In 1999, RTÉ put in place an additional national FM transmitter network, and it was decided to separate FM3 from Radio na Gaeltachta, and expand its remit to include other types of minority music. The resulting station was Lyric FM, launched in May 1999.

At the time of its launch, Lyric FM’s digital studios in Cornmarket Square in Limerick were the most advanced in the country.

In June, 1998, RTÉ; announced that Lyric fm would be based in Limerick and go on the air on May 1, 1999.
But Lyric has its too: being compared either to highbrow BBC Radio 3, (with its decades of history and budget of over £60 million!) or to the enormously successful commercial model, Classic FM.
More vocal music: Lyric fm features star singers singing the big arias, largely at the behest of our UK consultant who came from the popular and successful Classic FM, and because of the taste of Irish audiences, whoÂ’ve historically taken to Italian opera.
