Route

The M18 runs in a north east/south west direction from junction 32 of the M1 motorway to junction 35 of the M62 motorway. It passes east of Rotherham, south east of Doncaster & Armthorpe and to the west of Thorne. Much of the M18 is a two lane dual carriagway, and carries relatively low volumes of traffic. However, the section linking the M1 and A1(M) is much busier and has three lanes in each direction. It then passes over the impressive Wadworth Viaduct. To the north it then crosses the East Coast Main Line, and a large colliery can be seen to the south at Rossington. Possible Flaws

The roundabout design at Junction 2 was probably used to save money and at that time it was not known when the next section would be built. If it was built anew today, a free-flowing design would have been chosen instead, to avoid predictable hold-ups, as would the roundabout interchange with the M180.

These two sections of motorway, at the southern extremity of the North Eastern Region, have been included together as they formed part of the consultancy commission awarded to Sir Owen Williams and Partners by the Ministry of Transport in 1957.

This 3.6 mile section of M18 which was opened to traffic in June 1972 runs from a point on the Hatfield - Thorne Road A1146 to join the A614 at Waterside to the N W of Thorne.
A 2.5km length of the motorway in the middle of the contract was constructed over poor ground consisting of about 1m of soft clay containing lenses of silt and decomposed vegetation overlying sand.
Water drained from the motorway, with the exception of a small quantity outfalling into a stream at Edenthorpe, passes into the man-made drainage system of the area at West Moor Drain and Woodhouse Sewer, both these large ditches passing under the motorway in large 2.0m culverts.
