The M1917 Enfield 30 caliber rifle was an American modification and production of the British 303 caliber P-14 rifle during the period 1917 - 1918. The US nomenclature for the M1917 rifle is "US Rifle, cal 30, M1917" but is often called the "American Enfield". It has nothing in common with the British service 303 caliber rifle of c. 1890 - 1955 called the Enfield or "SMLE" (Short Magazine Lee Enfield) except the design location of Enfieldarsenal in the UK.
