The M198 howitzer is a medium-sized, towed artillery piece. It can be dropped by parachute or transported by a CH-47 Chinook. The M198 is deployed in separate corps- and Army-level field artillery units, as well as in artillery battalions of light and airborne divisions. It also provides field artillery fire support for all US Marine Corps Air-Ground Task Force organizations.
The M198 is equipped with a double baffle muzzle brake and a variable length hydropneumatic recoil mechanism.
The M198 howitzer weighs 15,760 pounds (in both traveling and firing configuration), and is 35.75 feet long in firing configuration (40 feet in traveling configuration and 24 feet in stowed configuration.) The cannon itself has 45 degrees of lateral traverse and can be elevated between 72 and -5 degrees.
The normal ground transport for the M198 is the M939 6x6 5-ton truck and the cannon itself requires a crew of 11.
The M198 Howitzer provides the user with a towed system that is air transportable, has high reliability and availability while greatly increasing the effective range of towed weaponry.
The M198 is air transportable by transport aircraft and the CH47C Helicopter.
The RE 198 was designated to improve M198 reliability and reduce the probability of Recoil Mechanism failure in the howitzers that had not been fired for extended periods of time (in excess of ninety days).
