Encyclopedia > M606 motorway

The M606 Bradford Spur motorway leaves the M62 motorway at junction 26, near Cleckheaton, and heads into Bradford, to join the A6177 Bradford Ring Road at an incomplete terminus. It opened in 1973. The terminus, when approaching from the south (heading north), is noted for its coned-off exit, which looks suspiciously half-finished. When entering the motorway from the north, off the easterly A6177, there is now a new slip road, built in 1999, that leads to a small roundabout, from where traffic now goes under the former-disused dual-grade intersection, with another slip road joining from the roundabout, for the westerly A6177 traffic. As explained with the coned-off exit, northerly traffic does not go under this roundabout, though the original plan was to head further into Bradford to join up with one of the main arterial roads - the A650 from Wakefield or the A641 to Huddersfield. From this exit, there is a sliproad which runs parallel to the northbound carriageway and joins at the terminus roundabout, one exit before the westbound A6177. This sliproad is used by some northbound drivers who are acquainted with the local area during peak times (8-9am and 4-6pm), to avoid the well-known bottleneck at the northbound terminus. The southerly junction with the M62 is known as the Chain Bar Interchange and features free-flowing sliproads from the Manchester direction M62 traffic to Bradford, but not the Leeds direction, which has to use the traffic-light controlled roundabout. This causes hold-ups at peak times as well. There is a McDonald's restaurant close to the east side of the incomplete terminus, for those people who enjoy gorging on unhealthy food, and a Morrisons supermarket round the corner from the west side.
