Encyclopedia > M621 motorway

The M621 motorway is a short motorway in the United Kingdom. It takes traffic from the M1 and M62 motorways into the centre of Leeds. A motorway (in United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand and some other Commonwealth nations) is both a type of road and a classification. ... The M1 motorway heading south towards junction 37 at Barnsley. ... The M62 motorway connects the cities of Liverpool and Hull, in England. ... Leeds Coat Of Arms Map sources for Leeds at grid reference SE297338 Leeds is a city in the county of West Yorkshire, in the north of England. ...

The start of the motorway at Gildersome does not have a Junction number, but is at Junction 27 of the M62.

Junction 1 - A6110 Leeds Outer Ring Road, Beeston.

Junction 2 - A643 Elland Road/Ingram Distributor, Beeston. Adjacent to Leeds United Football Club.

Junction 2A - Top Moor Side/Cemetery Road, Holbeck/Beeston. Westbound exit/Eastbound entrance only.

Junction 3 - A653 Dewsbury Road, Holbeck. Close to Leeds City Centre.

Junction 4 - Hunslet Distributor, Hunslet. Southbound exit, Northbound entrance/exit only. Southbound exit actually starts just beyond Junction 3, when heading eastbound.

Junction 5 - Tunstall Road, Beeston/Hunslet. Northbound exit/Southbound entrance only.

Junction 6 - Balm Road/Belle Isle Road, Hunslet Carr/Belle Isle. Eastbound exit/Westbound entrance only.

Junction 7 - A61 Wakefield Road, Stourton. Eastbound exit/Westbound entrance only. Close to Stourton Industrial Areas.

Junction 8 - A61 Wakefield Road, Stourton. Northbound exit/Southbound entrance only. Close to Stourton Industrial Areas.

Junctions 7 and 8 are actually very close to each other, and both join the same road! (From different directions).

The motorway ends at Junction 43 of the M1, without its own Junction number. The M1 actually branches off from itself here-the main line of the road is the M621. This junction is also restricted-movements are as follows: M1 Northbound-M1 Eastbound. M1 Westbound-M1 Southbound. M1 Northbound-M621 Northbound. M621 Southbound-M1 Southbound. The A61/A639 link Junctions 7/8 of the M621 with Junction 44 of the M1, enabling M1 Westbound-M621 Westbound and M621 Eastbound to M1 Eastbound movements to be made.

Originally the M621 from the current Junction 43 of the M1 to Junction 3 of the M621 was the M1. Both roads terminated at the Dewsbury Road interchange and were not linked. The M1/M621 in their present form were created when the M1-A1 Link Road was built, and this was numbered as the M1.
