Encyclopedia > MLS SuperDraft

The MLS SuperDraft is an annual event in which the Major League Soccer teams select players who have graduated from college or otherwise been signed by the league. The SuperDraft was first instituted in 2000, as a combination of the MLS College Draft, in which players having graduated college were selected, and the MLS Supplemental Draft, in which all other players were chosen. The draft is divided into six rounds of ten picks, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions.

Des Moines Menace (635 words)
There was the MLS draft, in which post-collegiate players in the A-League, in national-team programs, indoor soccer or in leagues overseas were selected.
One of the reasons for the creation of the MLS was to further the development and competitiveness of the U.S. national team in future World Cups.
MLS continued with the three-draft system until the 2000 season, when the idea of combining the three drafts into one all-encompassing draft was hatched.
