Encyclopedia > MOS Technology SPI

The 6529 Single Port Interface (SPI aka PIO) was an integrated circuit made by MOS Technology. It served as an I/O controller for the 6502 family of microprocessors, providing a single 8-bit digital bidirectional parallel I/O port. Unlike the more sophisticated 6522 VIA and 6526 CIA, it did not allow the data direction for each I/O line to be separately specified, nor did it support serial I/O or contain any timer capabilities. Because of this, it did not achieve widespread use. Integrated circuit showing memory blocks, logic and input/output pads around the periphery A monolithic integrated circuit (also known as IC, microchip, silicon chip, computer chip or chip) is a miniaturized electronic circuit (consisting mainly of semiconductor devices, as well as passive components) that has been manufactured in the surface... MOS Technology, Inc. ... The MOS Technology 6502 is an 8-bit microprocessor designed by MOS Technology in 1975. ... 8-bit refers to the number of bits used in the data bus of a computer. ... A digital system is one that uses discrete values (often electrical voltages), especially those representable as binary numbers, or non-numeric symbols such as letters or icons, for input, processing, transmission, storage, or display, rather than a continuous spectrum of values (ie, as in an analog system). ... It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with Parallel communications. ... Memory-mapped I/O (MMIO) and port I/O (also called port-mapped I/O or PMIO) are two complementary methods of performing input/output between the CPU and I/O devices in a computer. ... Rockwell 6522 VIA The 6522 Versatile Interface Adapter (VIA) was an integrated circuit made by MOS Technology, as well as second sources including Rockwell and Synertek. ... Pin configuration of the 6526 CIA The 6526/8520 Complex Interface Adapter (CIA) was an integrated circuit made by MOS Technology. ... This article needs to be cleaned up to conform to a higher standard of quality. ... A Programmable Interval Timer (PIT) provides one or more counters which trigger an interrupt when they reach their programmed count. ...

6529 ICs were available in 1 MHz, 2 MHz, and 3 MHz versions. The form factor was a JEDEC-standard 20-pin ceramic or plastic DIP. MegaHertz (MHz) is the name given to one million (106) Hertz, a measure of frequency. ... Form factor refers to the linear dimensions and configuration of a device as distinguished from other measures of size (for example Gigabytes; a measure of storage size): in computing, form factor is used to describe the size and format of PC motherboards (see AT, ATX, BTX), but also of hard... JEDEC stands for Joint Electron Device Engineering Council and is the semiconductor engineering standardization body of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA), a trade association that represents all areas of the electronics industry. ... Fixed Partial Denture, or Bridge The word ceramic is derived from the Greek word κεραμικός (keramikos). ... Household items made out of plastic. ... ICs in DIP14-Package Several PDIPs and CERDIPS. The large CERDIP in the foreground is an 8080 processor. ...
