Macedon is a town located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,688. The town is named after Macedon, the birthplace of Alexander the Great.

History

The first settlers arrived in 1789. Macedon was created from the Town of Palmyra in 1823.


Geography

The west town line is the border of Monroe County, New York and the south town line is the border of Ontario County, New York. The Erie Canal passes across the town.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 100.6 km˛ (38.9 mi˛). 100.2 km˛ (38.7 mi˛) of it is land and 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,688 people, 3,236 households, and 2,410 families residing in the town. The population density is 86.7/km˛ (224.6/mi˛). There are 3,388 housing units at an average density of 33.8/km˛ (87.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.05% White, 0.74% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,236 households out of which 40.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.4% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.10.


In the town the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $48,640, and the median income for a family is $55,218. Males have a median income of $41,166 versus $28,924 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,810. 6.8% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
