Macmillan is a global publishing firm founded in 1843 by Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, two brothers from the Isle of Arran, Scotland.


Until 1995 it was one of the oldest independent publishing houses.


The Macmillan group is owned by German media giant Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck GmbH.

Macmillan Publishers Ltd, also known as The Macmillan Group, is a privately-held international publishing company owned by Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group.
Macmillan was founded in 1843 by Daniel and Alexander Macmillan, two brothers from the Isle of Arran, Scotland.
The company was one of the oldest independent publishing houses until 1995 when a 70% share of the company was bought by German media giant Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group (Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinc GmbH).

This finding aid is a continuation of the archival description of the records of the Macmillan Company of Canada, one of the most important publishing firms in Canada during the twentieth century.
In 1973 the English branch of the Macmillan Company which had controlling interest in the Canadian branch sold the Macmillan Company of Canada to Maclean-Hunter Ltd. John Gray retired at the same time although he rejoined the company's Board of Directors.
Part II of the Macmillan archives is arranged into four major series in a manner similar to the arrangement of the records of part I. The executive series includes correspondence dealing with financial matters, printing arrangements, and the general business side of the company's operations.
