Saint Macrina the Elder (before 270 - c. 340) is the grandmother of Basil the Great, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, Saint Peter of Sebaste, and Saint Macrina the Younger. Little is known about this saint. Her home was at Neocaesarea in Pontus and during the Diocletian persecution, Macrina supposedly fled with her husband to the shores of the Black Sea. She was widowed and is the patron of widows and the patron against poverty. Her feast is celebrated on 14 January.
Saint Macrina died in the year 380, after a final sigh of exalting prayers of thanks to the Lord for having received of Him blessings over all the course of her life.
It was Macrina and her husband who founded the faith of the family and passed it on as a splendid treasure to her children and grandchildren.
Macrina was born about the time of Gregory's death, and it was the faith of this ardent apostle that became the way of life for her family.
Macrina was known to have treasured and read the writings of Gregory the Wonderworker, and it was the fire and zeal of his writings that was passed on to Basil and his brother.
