Encyclopedia > Madan Theatre

The Madan Theatre Company has its roots in 1902 when Jamshedji Framji Madan, a wine merchant who came to Calcutta from Bombay as a child, started his entertainment business by acquiring two theatre companies in Calcutta and then beginning film exhibitions . The first of these were of imported cinemas, which were screened in tent shows in the maidan in the vicinity of the Esplanade. J F Madan had earlier introduced Parsi theatre to Calcutta, at the Corinthian Theatre, which he had acquired. Soon, the Corinthian had become a well-known place of popular entertainment. Madan also created the Elphinstone Bioscope Company, producing a number of short films. In 1910 Madan theatre was constructed as the first permanent show house in Calcutta. In 1919 Madan produced the first Bengali feature film Billwamangal.
