In the late 1800s, Madison County became an industrial powerhouse, and in the twentieth centruy, was known for first, Graniteware, and later, its steel mills, oil refinerys, and other heavy industry. Because of this large working class population, the County, and the surrounding area, was well known as a Democratic powerhouse. In the early twenty-first century, Madison County, which, in addition to its heavy industry, had become known as a county where a worker could fake an injury and get a ton of money, came into the sights of the "tort reform" movement, by such entities as the US Chamber of Commerce, the US Civil Justice League, and the American Tort Reform Association. These entities started to spend huge sums of money in local elections, with massive media campaigns, in order to return justice to the civil justice system. In excess of $15,000,000.00 was spent by these entities in the 2004 race for the Illinois Supeme Court on behalf of the Republican candidate (the Democratic candidate was only able to raise and spend 1/3 of that figure). The Republican candidate won a narrow victory, in an area where no Republican had won election in 40 years. In 2006, the US Chamber, and its allies, tried again, with the campaign for the Illinois Appellate Court. However, despite funnelling millions more dollars into the race, the crooked Democrat was able to win again. To this day, the US Chamber of Commerce publishes a propaghanda newspaper, called The Madison County Record, to misreport on legal happenings in the County, and to try to persuade persons to vote for their candidates.
