The Magistrates' Court of Victoria is an Australian court. It is the lowest in Victoria, with the County Court of Victoria and the Supreme Court of Victoria respectively judicially higher. This places it at the bottom of the Australian court hierarchy. The County Court of Victoria is located in the legal precinct of Melbournes central business district, on the corner of William Street, and Lonsdale Street opposite the Supreme Court and Melbourne Magistrates Court. ... Though the current court inception is established by the Magistrates' Court Act 1989 (Parliament of Victoria).
Another thing the Magistrates' Court traditionally has done, was to order defendants make contributions to a "Poor Box" that was distributed to deserted wives and children, during maintenance proceedings and the like, rather than have the defendant serve a small time.
In 2000 the Chief Magistrate of the Court Mr Michael Adams was forced to stand down on the 31st October 2000, after claims that he harassed female members of his court.
