The novel tells the story of Robert Merrick, who is resuscitated by a rescue crew after a boating accident. The crew is unable to save the life of a [[Physician|doctor] on the other side of the lake who was having a heart attack at the same time], who was renowned for his ability to help people. Therefore, Merrick decides to devote his life to making up for the doctor's life, but in the process he not only alienates the doctor's widow, with whom he has fallen in love, but also causes another tragedy. This causes him to totally re-evaluate his life, and so he decides to become a physician. (Specificly a brain surgeon, in order to try to replace the loss to the world of Dr. Hudson, whose life was lost due to a heart-attack while the resusitating crew was busy aiding Robert Merrick on the other side of the lake, and was therefore unable to come to Dr. Hudson's aid in time to save his life.) The theme of this book MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION is based on the passage in the book of Matthew which states:

"Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.....That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly." (Matthew Chapter 6:1-4.) This book, though fiction, inspired many thousands of people to again take up their Bibles and study it for the wisdom it contains. Many later claimed major life changes resulted for them from the reading of his book.

A later book written by Lloyd C. Douglas was written in response to the flood of letters he received from readers who wanted to know where they could find the book he refered to in the novel, called DR. HUDSON'S SECRET JOURNAL, which Robert Merrick decoded, and from which learned the secret of the great doctor's extraordinary success as a doctor. (According to the book, the good doctor's secret was the literal practice of doing his good deeds secretly, and thereby reaping spiritual power to use in becoming an excellent doctor.)

Three of Lloyd C. Douglas's books were eventually made into block-buster motion-pictures: THE ROBE, THE BIG FISHERMAN, and MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION. That Lloyd C. Douglas was inspired by God to write these extraordinary books which spiritually moved millions of people, there can be little doubt, to those who have felt spiritual inspiration.

The former synopsis of the book MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION fails to give a complete picture of the theme of the novel, which was based on a practical application of the passage from the book of Matthew which says: Magnificent Obsession is a 1935 film based on a book by Lloyd C. Douglas, Magnificent Obsession. ... Magnificent Obsession is a 1954 film directed by Douglas Sirk and based on a book by Lloyd C. Douglas, Magnificent Obsession. ... "Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven....That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly." (Matthew Chapter 6:1-4.)
Many people wrote to Mr. Douglas asking about a fictional book that was mentioned in MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, but had never actually been written called DR. HUDSON's SECRET JOURNAL. Mr. Douglas eventually did write DR. HUDSON'S SECRET JOURNAL in response to the huge number of requests from readers asking about where to find the book.

Lloyd C. Douglas was a noted minister and author of religious books, most notable of which were two, which were-along with MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION- made into motion pictures. These other two famous books that were made into movies were THE ROBE and THE BIG FISHERMAN. These three books profoundly effected much of the Christian world that read them.

Magnificent Obsession introduced themes that reappeared in the author's later books - a medical setting, the wealthy background, the conversion of the atheist hero to a practising Christian, due to feelings of guilt, this time after causing a death of a brain surgeon, Wayne Hudson.
He is a genius who believes that if man harbors any sort of fear, no matter how benign and apparently harmless, it percolates through all his thinking and damages his personality.
One of the characters says, "whoever loveth a genius is out of luck with his devotion except he beareth all things, endureth all things, suffered long and is kind." DOCTOR HUDSON'S SECRET JOURNAL (1939) was a prequel to the story.
