Origins of Mahayana Buddhism

Scholars believe that Mahayana as a distinct movement began around the %20(Redirected%20from%201st%20century%20BCE)%20%20(2nd%20century%20BC%20-%201st%20century%20BC%20-%201st%20century%20-%20other%20centuries)%20The%201st%20century%20BC%20starts%20on%20January%201%2C%20100%20BC%20and%20ends%20on%20December%2031%2C%201%20BC.%20... 1st century BCE in the North-western Indian subcontinent, estimating a formative period of about three centuries before it was transmitted in a highly evolved form to China in the %20%20(1st%20century%20-%202nd%20century%20-%203rd%20century%20-%20other%20centuries)%20%20%20%20Events%20%20Roman%20Empire%20governed%20by%20the%20%5CFive%20Good%20Emperors%5C%20(96%26%238211%3B180)%20%26%238211%3B%20Nerva%2C%20Trajan%2C%20Hadrian%2C%20Antoninus%20Pius%2C%20Marcus%20Aurelius.%20... 2nd century CE. According to Williams (1989), the development of the Mahayana was a slow, gradual process. The Mahayana was not a rival school, and therefore it was not the consequence of a schism (sanghbheda). Mahayana and non-Mahayana monks could live without discord in the same monastery, so long as they held the same code.

First known inscriptions

The earliest stone inscriptions containing recognizably Mahayana formulations were found in the Indian subcontinent in %20%20%20Mathura%20(%26%232350%3B%26%232341%3B%26%232369%3B%26%232352%3B%26%232366%3B)%20is%20a%20city%20in%20India%2C%20located%20approximately%2050%20km%20north%20of%20Agra%2C%20and%20south%20of%20Delhi.%20... Such inscriptions are rather late and few (the next known one is dated to the end of the 3rd century), in comparison to the multiplicity of Mahayana writings transiting from Central Asia to China at that time, and the involvement of Central Asian Buddhist monks, suggesting the focus of Mahayana development was probably in the northwest.

  • Universalism, according to which every individual is endowed with Buddha nature.
  • Enlightened wisdom, as the main focus of realization.
  • Compassion through the transferal of merit.
  • Salvation, supported by a rich cosmography, including celestial realms and powers, with a spectrum of %20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20Prince%20Siddhartha%20Gautama%20as%20a%20bodhisattva%2C%20before%20becoming%20a%20Buddha.%20... “Philosophical Mahayana” tends to focus on the first three characteristics (Universality, enlightened wisdom, compassion) without showing much interest for supernatural constructions, while “Devotional Mahayana” mainly focuses on salvation towards other-worldly realms.

The name "Mahāyāna" means great %20%20%20%20%20%20%20Yana%20is%20a%20Sanskrit%20word%20meaning%20vehicle.%20... yāna, or the greater vehicle, in contrast to the Hīnayāna, or "Smaller vehicle", indicating universalism, or Salvation for all. This affirmation is grounded in the belief that every individual possesses Buddha nature, and therefore is a potential Buddha who will attain %20%20%20%20%20%20Bodhi%20(Pali%20and%20Sanskrit.%20... bodhi.

This was contrasted with Hinayana doctrine, which considers that the search for Nirvana is only possible for a few, demands to lead a monk’s life, to renounce all possessions and to cut oneself from life and its desires, an ideal only achieved by selected %20%20%20%20%20%20%20A%20garden%20featuring%20depictions%20of%20various%20arhats%20(Hsi%20Lai%20Temple%2C%20California)%20%20%20An%20arhat%20(also%20arahat%20or%20arahant%3B%20Chinese%3A%20%26%2338463%3B%26%2332645%3B%26%2328450%3B%2C%20aluohan%3B%20Tibetan%3A%20dgra-bcom-pa%3B%20Jp.%20... arhats.

Because of its universalist position, Mahayana was able to appeal more easily to the lay masses, by promising for all too various ways to enlightenment.

Enlightened wisdom

According to Mahayana, traditional Buddhism tends to focus on an ascetic, individual, approach to attain Nirvana: suppression of desire, removal from the world, solitariness. Its followers are śrāvakas and %20%20%20%20A%20Pratyeka%20Buddha%20(Sanskrit%20pratyekabuddha%3B%20Pali%20pacceka-buddha)%20is%20one%20of%20three%20types%20of%20enlightened%20beings%20according%20to%20some%20schools%20of%20Buddhism%20(the%20others%20being%20the%20%26%23347%3Br%26%23257%3Bvakas%20and%20Samyaksam-Buddhas).%20... pratyekabuddhas.

On the contrary, the primary focus of Mahayana is %20%20%20%20%20%20In%20Buddhist%20thought%2C%20bodhicitta%20(Ch.%20%26%23... bodhicitta: a mind of great compassion conjoined with wisdom (%20%20%20%20%20Praj%5CxF1%26%23257%3B%20(Sanskrit%3B%20Pali%3A%20pa%5CxF1%5CxF1%26%23257%3B%3B%20Tibetan%3A%20shes%20rab%2C%20Chinese%3A%20%26%2333324%3B%26%2333509%3B%2C%20banruo)%20meaning%20%5Cwisdom%2C%5C%20%5Ccognitive%20acuity%3B%5C%20or%20%5Cknow-how%5C%20--%20but%20especially%20the%20Buddhist%20wisdom%20that%20is%20based%20on%20a%20realization%20of%20dependent%20origination%2C%20not-self%2C%20emptiness%2C%20etc.%20... prajna) realizing %20%20%20The%20word%20%5Cemptiness%5C%20can%20occur%20in%20different%20contexts%3A%20%20In%20Buddhism%2C%20%5Cemptiness%5C%20is%20called%20shunyata.%20... emptiness. Many “philosophical” schools of Mahayana Buddhism have focused on the nature of enlightenment and Nirvana itself, from the %20%20Madhyamaka%20is%20a%20Buddhist%20philosophical%20tradition%20that%20asserts%20that%20all%20phenomena%20are%20empty%20of%20%5Cself-nature%5C%20or%20%5Cessence%5C%20(Sanskrit%3A%20Svabh%26%23257%3Bva)%2C%20that%20they%20have%20no%20intrinsic%2C%20independent%20reality%20apart%20from%20the%20causes%20and%20conditions%20from%20which%20they%20arise.%20%20... Compassion

Compassion, or %20%20%20Karuna%20(Pali)%20is%20the%20Jainist%20concept%20of%20love.%20%20%20... Karuna, is the other key concept of Mahayana, and considered the indispensable complement to enlightened wisdom. Compassion is important in all schools of Buddhism, but particularly emphasized in Mahayana. It relies on the idea that excess acquired merit can be transmitted to others. The Bodhisattvas are the main actors of compassion, %20%20%20%20In%20Mahayana%20Buddhism%2C%20Avalokitesvara%20or%20Avalokiteshvara%20is%20a%20bodhisattva%20who%20embodies%20the%20compassion%20of%20all%20Buddhas.%20... Avalokitesvara being foremost among them. Although having reached enlightenment, Bodhisattvas usually make a vow to postpone entering into %20%20%20The%20following%20article%20is%20about%20the%20term%20Nirvana%20in%20the%20context%20of%20Buddhism.%20... Nirvana until all other beings have also been saved. They then devote themselves to helping others reach enlightenment.

Salvation

“Devotional Mahayana” developed a rich cosmography, with various supernatural Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, residing in paradisiacal realms. The concept of Trinity, or %20%20%20%20The%20Trikaya%20doctrine%20(Sanskrit%2C%20literally%20%5CThree%20bodies%20or%20personalities%5C%3B%20%26%2319977%3B%26%2336523%3B%20Chinese%3A%20S%26%23257%3Bnsh%5CxE9n%2C%20Japanese%3A%20sanjin)%20is%20an%20important%20Buddhist%20teaching%20both%20on%20the%20nature%20of%20reality%2C%20and%20what%20a%20Buddha%20is.%20... trikaya, supports these constructions, making the Buddha himself into a transcendental god-like figure.

Under various conditions, these lands could be attained by devotees after their death so that when reborn they could endeavour towards Buddhahood in the best possible conditions. Depending on the sect, this salvation to “paradise” can be obtained by faith, imaging, or sometimes even by the simple invocation of the Buddha’s name. This approach to salvation is at the origin of the mass appeal of devotional Buddhism, especially represented by the %20%20%20%20%20%20%20The%20Buddha%20Amitabha%2C%2013th%20century%2C%20Kamakura%2C%20Japan.%20%20%20... Pure Land.

This rich cosmography also allowed Mahayana to be quite syncretic and accommodating of other faiths or deities. Various origins have also been suggested to explain its emergence, such as “popular %20%20This%20article%20is%20about%20the%20Hindu%20religion%3B%20for%20other%20meanings%20of%20the%20word%2C%20see%20Hindu%20(disambiguation).%20%20%20%20%20%20... On the Revival of Newar Mahayana Buddhism (2339 words)
Newar Buddhists should carefully consider whether it is better to blindly hold on to their old traditions or to make the changes needed so that their grand children will still have a living culture of Mahayana Buddhism to guide their lives.
It is this failure to touch the minds of the young that especially weakens the tradition today; in all other aspects of their lives, the young must place great emphasis on education and mastering the intricacies of scientific knowledge.
For the Newar Mahayana community, the same challenge is there: only by looking outward and connecting with the outside world beyond the Himalayas can they revive their Mahayana faith.
GANDHI AND MAHAYANA BUDDHISM (8491 words)
Buddhists (except some Tantric sects) firmly reject the ritual sacrifice of animals, although many allow the eating of meat as long as Buddhists are not the butchers.
On the other hand, a Buddhist, because of a nonsubstantial view of the self, would recognize that a spiritual self free from matter is an illusion; and she would be more concerned about the karmic effects of suicide as the ultimate violence to the self.
Mahayana Buddhists tend to be more supportive of real diversity within unity, and especially helpful is the MahayanistsÂ’ suggestion that nonduality be expressed as "two but not two" so as to avoid the implication of the total nondifferentiation that we find in Advaita Vedanta.
