The Sultanate of Johor (or sometimes Johor-Riau) was founded by Malaccan Sultan Mahmud Shah's son, Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah in 1528.
In 1511, Malacca fell to the Portuguese and Sultan Mahmud Shah was forced to flee Malacca .
