Updated 1189 days 11 hours 40 minutes ago.

The Maiden flight of an aircraft is the first occasion on which an aircraft leaves the ground of its own accord. It is usually called the First Flight in North America.

The first flight of a new aircraft type is always an historic occasion for the type. It is also one of the most dangerous. The first flight of a new type is almost invariable carried out by a highly experienced test pilot. Test pilots who have carried out the first flight of a new type are often accorded special status by their peers.
