SOCCER, name commonly given in North America to a form of FOOTBALL in which members of two opposing teams use their feet, heads, and bodies in attempting to advance a spherical ball into the opponent’s goal.
Organized soccer is played on a grass field, or pitch, of not more than 130 yd (119 m) in length by 100 yd (91 m) in width, and not less than 100 yd (91 m) in length by 50 yd (46 m) in width.
Soccer was first seen in the Olympics in 1900 and was included as a medal sport in 1908, but professional players could not officially compete until 1984.
Major League Soccer (5449 words)
Major League Soccer (MLS) is a professional soccer league with teams in the United States and Canada.
MLS was formed on December 17, 1993, in fulfillment of Alan Rothenberg and U.S. Soccer's promise to FIFA to establish a "Division One" professional football (soccer) league in exchange for the staging of the FIFA World Cup USA 1994 in the United States.
The league, while not abandoning the single-entity nature that has preserved it (and Garber has said that he does not believe MLS will do so in the foreseeable future, in order to avoid repeating mistakes of the NASL), is increasingly dismantling central controls in favor of owner diversification and a more open competition.
