The Majority Leader of the New York State Senate is one of the most powerful political positions in the state. It traditionally overlaps with the position of President Pro Tempore (or "temporary president"), though it does not have to. If the office of Lieutenant Governor falls vacant, the majority leader becomes Acting Lieutenant Governor. The current holder of the position is Senator Dean Skelos.
